A City XI made up of mainly reserve and youth players has pulled off an impressive 1-0 victory against South Wales rivals Merthyr Tydfil. Gavin Gordon found the net just after half-time, and will be hoping his performance will get him back in the frame for a place in the first team squad. A city side made up of mainly reserve and youth players were in action for the Bluebirds against Merthyr Tydfil in a pre-season game on Wednesday night. In recent seasons, City have taken a first choice side to Pennydarren Park for a friendly, but with the large amount of pre-season games that the club has already arranged, City had to send up a side with mostly unfamiliar names. Gavin Gordon scored the only goal of the game, and will have hoped to have caught the eye of Lennie Lawrence as he aims to earn himself a regular place in City's first team squad. City deserved their victory after striking the post twice in the opening half. The win is the fourth consecutive victory for such a City 'XI', following victories against Cwmbran Town, Pontyculun and Aberystwyth Town.
