Match Thread: Wolves v West Ham United KO 7.45pm 01.04.2025

April 1 2025

Premier League football returns tonight after the International break and FA Cup quarter finals at the weekend. Molineux welcomes West Ham United under the lights this evening, the Hammers sitting on 34 points, eight above us. Leicester are away to Man City tomorrow and Ipswich are away to Bournemouth, again tomorrow, so a Wolves win tonight would extend the gap from them both to 12 points, not mathematically safe but surely more than one big boot towards premier league security?

Ahead of the match, a mixed day of saft Wolves stories and a more positive one. Firstly rumours were circulating this morning that Pereira was going to get the sack with Wolves in conversation with Daniele De Rossi in talks to take over. April 1st madness perhaps? Next there is talk of Cunha suggesting (or being interpreted of suggesting) he is ready to leave (read here https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c98g1121l54o ) though finally the good news, Joao Gomes has had a five year extension to his contract! The latter, at least, seems to be more concrete in content …. For the moment anyway!

Onto the game today. Wolves look to reverse the December 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium which by all accounts was a pretty lacklustre away performance in the immediate lead up to the departures of both Gary O’Neil and Julen Lopetegui. Wolves, who again will be without the mercurial Cunha, will look to a front line including Larsen to provide to drive and impetus in front of goal in the first of two fixtures this week, the next at Portman Road on Saturday. It would be good to keep the wins coming after an invaluable three points at Southampton and with any luck the break will not stifle survival momentum which has seen 10 points from the last six matches. Nevertheless, West ham are seeking their fourth win in a row versus Wolves and they have lost just one games in the previous four.

There is no TV coverage of the match tonight which is disappointed, so I hope you are able to follow developments through other means, as said in the past, the commentary from the official website is usually excellent.

All the best to the players tonight, an additional three points would be terrific. Personally I believe Wolves have a great opportunity the snatch all three, though I’ve been wrong more than once! Enjoy the game and leave your comments and thoughts in the thread in the usual way,

UTW!!!

Bowen draws a foul by Agbadou and a fierce free kick from Ward Prowse goes over the bar

Poor defending from Toti puts Bowen through who squares it to Ferguson who fluffed his chance. Could easily be 0-1.

Bellegarde draws a foul in the right wing position, great cross, Toti heads and excellent save from Areola

Strand Larsen strikes the back of the net with his 10th of the season, slight deflection off Max Kilman. A shot from 18 yards.

21 gone and we’re 1-0 up 👍

Terrific midfield play from J Gomes, ball comes to Larsen who sets up Munetsi who slams it onto the bar. Should be 2-0.

Gomes treated from an injury, corner to West Ham, Wolves down to 10 men, Sa gets a yellow card waiting for the corner which is cleared away and Gomes back on!

Decent half of football, just a couple left. Wolves on top overall but this is far from done and dusted yet. We’ve had the lion share of possession and played some good stuff, passing or movement though desperately need that second goal.

Listening to the commentary and it does sound as if we are exerting a level of control over West Ham. Movement seems effective and attacking intent is good to hear. Not over yet but a positive start let's keep it going lads three points would be brilliant.

Watching this in Russian (or something sounding like it). Strand Larsen looked like he had forever to shoot; this should hopefully do wonders for his confidence. Overall pretty positive stuff from the midfield and going forward. Hope RAN and Toti dont sleep tonight thinking about a defensive mixup that could have been costly.

9 minutes into the second half.

Hammers looking a bit more positive, Bellegarde shooting wide.

18 gone, a general lull in the Wolves performance.

There are a few bouts of handbags on and off the pitch.

Crowd re getting vocal but not much football of late!!

Nice attack by Wolves with good play down the right from the Doc but Larsen skews his shot wide.

Sarabia coming on for Andre who must be close to a second yellow. Probably a good idea

Wow!
Toti makes a big error, ball falls to Soucek who misses from close range when an equaliser seemed certain. Unbelievably he put it wide.
90 are up with 5 added

Ugly is always a terrific when you win!!!

Pereira fist pumps x 3 in front of the south bank. The passion is there

How did Munetsi miss that? 1-0, great 3 points. West Ham were on the beach and Potter is way overrated but we are fast approaching safety

Absolutely necessary three points.
Well done lads, you ground it out.

Win was the main thing and we played pretty well in the first half, especially Joao Gomes I thought. I also thought ( hoped ) that Toti had stopped some of the stupid lapses he is prone to but clearly not yet. I like Toti overall but the mess near the end should have cost us a goal. Munetsi is a midfielder and I'm not sure about him playing in attack. He doesn't do enough for me and seems as though he needs 10 chances to score. He should have had two tonight. Surely we're safe now.

We ground that one out 2nd half but it's all about the points the end of the day.
Got a little lucky with a few defensive lapses (toti mainly) but somehow we escaped with a clean sheet.
I thought gomes in midfield had a great game tonight, he was everywhere.
Upwards and onwards to safety!
