Match Thread: Chelsea vs Wolves

The Captain & the Kid

By Wolves
February 4 2024

It's been a strange week leading up to today's game for Wolves at Chelsea. The transfer window was open until Thursday night, and all the pundits kept saying how - despite spending a reported £1 billion since the club being taken over and facing no sanctions from the Premier League - Chelsea needed a new striker. At the same time Wolves were trying to sign the Chelsea striker Broja - valued by his club at £50m - on loan, but in the end admitted they couldn't afford to because of the threat of having ten points deducted next season under FFP rules!!!!

Following the disappointing late loss to Man United on Thursday, Wolves face another challenge when they travel to Stamford Bridge, a place where they have not won since 1979. However the fact that they beat the Londoners at Molineux on Christmas Eve will surely help the team believe that they can come away undefeated. However Chelsea are likely to still be smarting from their heavy defeat at Anfield live on TV this week and will be keen to get three points today.

Chelsea seem to have had a great deal of injuries to cope with in their huge squad which has perhaps limited Mauricio Pochettino's ability to decide on his preferred starting eleven. Christopher Nkunku came off the bench to score on Wednesday, and is being consider for a starting place today as is striker Nicholas Jackson (pictured).

On the other hand Wolves are likely to largely stick with the team we saw play on Thursday as there are not a lot of options available to Manager Gary O'Neil!! Hwang Hee Chan and Boubakar Traore are still away with their national teams, but Rayan Ait-Nouri is back in the squad and pushing for a start today after coming on against Utd and doing well. It remains to be seen whether Pablo Serabia or John-Ricard Belleguarde will get the nod in the only other likely change. Wolves hopes will once again be pinned on Matheus Cunha and Pedro Neto having good games up front.

Today's match is scheduled to kick off at 2pm and is not being televised live. Our referee will be Tim Robinson, with Simon Hooper on VAR duty.

This board will endeavour to provide regular updates on the progress of the game. Members and visitors are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

Neto & Cunha have already brought out saves from Petrovic after loose passes by Chelsea

Cheshire wolf

Now Jose is slow coming out to collect & Nkunku just unable to convert. Corner comes to nothing

Good break bybNeto but his cross doesn’t reach Cunha.

Good ball by Caicedo to feed through to Palmer and he easily beats Jose, against the run of play.

Gomes breaks forward and passes to Cunha who’s shot is well deflected in off Silva.

Wolves goal awarded to Cunha despite the deflections. Wolves defence well organised in a back five when Chelsea are in possession & try to smother them.

Cheshire wolf

Gusto fouls Cunha just outside the area on their right side & gets a yellow card. Free kick to be taken by Pablo& headed just over the bar by Cunha

Fernandez goes down in the area with Lemina alongside him & looks for a pen but rightly nothing given by the ref or VAR.

Great footwork by Netotoget round Chilwell. Innocuous foul by Gomes on Caicedo, then Semedo gets a yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Great break by Neto but his shot is blocked, then he’s booked for a challenge on Chilwell. Neto breaks up the right wing, puts it across and RAN connects and his shotis deflected in off Disasi.

Four mins AT before half time. Toti and Gusto are having a right old battle down our left side!

Sounds as if we are in control listening to the commentary.
Neto seems to be on fire.
Cmon lads.

Half time whistle goes and the Chelsea fans are not a happy lot! Wolves have taken the game to Chelsea throughout the half andforced them into fouks and errors. The roght wing has been very productive for us with Neto in particular breaking up there. We have had good fortune with regard to shot being deflected in, but they have resulted from good attacking play. Our defence and midfield have stood up well to the threat from Palmer and Nkunku, and this will need to continue for the next 45 minutes.

I wouldn’t say we’re in control Lupy but so far we have coped well with their threat and been dangerous when we break.

Cunha brought down by Caicedo just outside their area.Free kick should be an opportunity for Serabia and it goes just wide of the left post with Petrovic beaten!
Anothrr foulin same spot by Caicedo on Pablo gets him a yellow card and another free kick just on the dcge of the D

Good attack by Chelsea but Wolves defend well as Palmer gets close in to Jose. Jackson likely to replace Caicedo. Palmer shoots wide past Jose’s left post.

Neto picks up a loose ball down right wing and passes a sublime ball for Cunha to bury it

Twenty minutes plus AT to go and Wolves lead 3-1

Cheshire wolf
04/02/2024 15:37
Mudryk and Chukwuemeka replace Sterling & Nkunku. Neto and Pablo have both played very well and are replaced by Doyle and Bellegarde

Cheshire wolf

Cunha breaks up the left wing and tries to feed JRB but just too far ahead of him. Jose comfortably collects a Chilwell cross. Nasty challenge on Doyle by Chilwell gets him a yellow card

Cunha brought down in the area by Gusto and the penalty is awarded, which Cunha puts away

Five minutes to go plus AT and Wolves have an unimaginable lead over Chelsea. Mudryk puts a corner in which Thiago Silvsbglances into the corner, and there's no man on the post.

Hufgo Bueno replaces RAN who has played well. Gallagher goes down under attention from Mario, but no pen given. Two mins plus a possible ten minutes AT to play!!

Cheshire wolf

Doc on for Joao. And there are indeed ten added minutes from somewhere to be played. Wolves manage to keep out a Gallagher shot!

Cheshire wolf
04/02/2024 15:57
JRB set free on goal but dithers and lets a weak shot go which is easily collected. Into final five minutes

Excellent lkay by Cunha to earn a calming free kick by the flag. Good interception by Max but a corner conceded, which is headed out to Gallagher & he puts it high over the bar. 90 seconds to play.

Jose fluffs collecting a shot and Daws puts it out for a corner which is the last action, before the whistle goes, and Wolves have a monumental winover Chelsea for the first win at Stamford Bridge since 1979. A great team performance from our team and a superb hatrick for Matheus Cunha. Excellent three points which takes us above Chelsea into 10th place.

It looks like we're going to be in the Premiership next year. What was the name of that
Spanish manager who left us in the lurch last year......??

If we’d worn Old Gold Risca, we’d have won by 6!!!

That’s for your efforts Chesh, I wasn’t able to follow the match for ther most part and it good to see the context. When I did get in the car and tune into 5Live Xtra we were 3-1 up with about 20 left on the clock. It was an absolute pleasure to hear the often glowing report and comments from the commentary team, they even said after the Cunha hat trick penalty that 5 or 6 (rather than 4) would not have flattered the Wolves performance , such was our superiority. Having said that when Chelsea got their 2nd, it was far too early for me and I felt the usual impending doom that my jangling nerves instil in me!! 2 is never enough!

Thankfully despite a late Chelsea burst of energy, this fine battling Wolves side under GON, produced a wonderful overall performance and put the multi million pound Chelsea squad firmly to bed.

The first win there since 1979 ….. what a stat to break today and in great style. What a way to bounce back from Thursdays performance and gutting final few minutes.

Really looking forward to seeing the highlights. I hope the MOTD2 team praise our team which is richly deserved rather than focus on Chelsea woes. We need the full credit required. We really do possess resilience.

UTW!!

Great way to respond to a defeat. Outplayed them. Even when we went a goal down I thought we would get something out of it. Not sure why Cunha's first goal was put down as his but Ait-Nouri's was an og, they were both on target, but it matters not. Yes, they were both deflections but if you don't get a shot in, you won't get the rub of the green. I wouldn't mind a bit more consistency from Kilman, fantastic against Albion, not so good against Manure but solid again today, the tackle and clearance in added time were top draw and out of interest I have no idea where 10 minutes came from. Cunha and Neto are different class and Semedo deserves a mention today. Into the top half of the table. Don't know if we will stay there but at the start of the season I would have been happy to finish 17th.

Let's not forget Joao Gomes, an absolute engine in midfield.

Fantastic win and performance from the boys.
Nice to outplay Chelsea on their own pitch and first win there since 79.
Scoring goals for fun now so happy days!
Neto on fire and well done cunha on his hatrick he looks a different player since oneil came to the club.
As usuall on sky it's not about how well wolves played its about how poor Chelsea were.
Sky's obsession with the so called big 6 makes me sick.
Well done wolves you were brilliant today!
