Match Thread: Crystal Palace vs Wolves

Adama's winner

By Wolves
October 18 2022

Wolves managed to scrape a win on Saturday thanks to a penalty awarded via VAR, and now hope that the positivity gained from another three points will help in their challenge tonight against another team struggling in the bottom half of the League

Having only managed a goalless draw against bottom team Leicester City on Saturday, Crystal Palace will no doubt be hoping for better against Wolves in front of a home crowd, but Wolves will also be buoyed from getting three points and getting out of the bottom three, and be keen to move further up the League. Palace have won the same number of games as Wolves but have drawn one more, putting them one point ahead but four places higher in the League, so it should be a tight game.

The seemingly interminable process of appointing a new Manager at Wolves still goes on (reminscent of the debacle when McCarthy was sacked) and so Steve Davis and James Collins will once again be in the dug out and responsible for team selection this evening. Nathan Collins is likely to return in defence - after serving his suspension - probably at the expense of Toti Gomes but the midfield is possibly the more interesting area, to see whether a three man midfield is persisted with and whether Joao Moutinho is expected to play two games in four days, with Boubacar Traore now available. Adama Traore impressed some journalists with his attacking play - if not his crosses - on Saturday and is surely likely to be part of the same starting line-up in attack.

There can be little doubt that this is as important a game as Saturday's was if Wolves are going to maintain a position outside of the bottom three, and in preparation for the game against Leicester on Sunday. However Crystal Palace boast some good attacking players - notably Saha, Eze, Olise and Edouarde, so our defence will need to be well organised and on the ball.

The match is due to kick off at the later than usual time of 20:15hrs and will be screened by Amazon Prime. Our referee will be David Coote with Lee Mason once again on VAR duty.

This board will plan to provide regular updates on the progress of the match. Members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

If Palace are as ineffective tonight as they were against Leicester at the weekend then they could be there for the taking. Not to be underestimated though but we should be buoyed by our win and with our tails up we have a chance.
An invaluable three points if we can grab them and would take us above Palace.
Fingers crossed as always.

What a boost it would be to get another three points tonight, but sadly I can’t see it! Funnier things have happened though, I’d be delighted with a point! Palace seem to have the edge for me from what I’ve seen of them so far.

On the more positive, can / will the win v Forest bolster the lads up? Naturally, whatever the mindset we just must get on the scoresheet. Collins back will, I think, be beneficial, as much as I like Toti, he gave the ball away and looked a bit tottery on Saturday.

An interesting line - up I think. Jonny hasn't been up to the mark in a few of the recent matches, and good to see Traore and Bueno getting a start. I would like to see Connor Ronan get a run out at some point too.

What a waste of money Guedes looks, maybe he has the same agent as silva

Don’t disagree though apparently he was ill with Covid when playing at Chelsea, I heard this on the radio after the match on Saturday - so that’s the reason he was subbed.

Doesn’t explain previous no shows.

Won’t miss Ait Nouri but we are going to have to get used to playing without Mouthnio pretty soon. Time for Costa’s debut goal?

Ait-Nouri is ill, Toti injured, Joao & Jonny rested. And we’re off

Not sure Hugo Bueno will be as attacking as RAN. Palace hit the post and then Costa should score but Guaita stops it.

18/10/2022 20:25
Wolves are snapping into tackles. Palace are pressing high when we have possession

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 20:31
Zaha showing his unpleasant side already. Some good play by Adama. Free kick to CP on left wing goes for a corner off Collins goes for a goal kick

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 20:35
Good ball from Nunez to Neves who shoots from outside the areav(naturally) but wide. Adama is defending well to deny Zaha then Eze

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 20:38
Semedo is doing a good job up against Zaha so far. Adama needs to take more care with his passing.

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 20:42
Max brings down Zaha for a free kick which Eze puts wide. Olise always looks dangerous on the ball an gets a corner, which is well defended.

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 20:46
Nearly all the action is taking place in our half - we’re finding it very hard to get out. Hugo Bueno up the left wing puts a glorious ball over which Adama heads in

One too many fouls by Boubacar Traore gets him a yellow card, swiftly followed by one for Ward for a foul on DP after which he needs treatment.

Doucorebrings down Adama just outside their area & gets a yellow card. Neves steps up and hits the post. Ref blows the half time whistle rather than giving us the corner we deserved.
Wolves have scored!! They lead away from home after a veryvwell crafted and taken goal. They have had to soak up the pressure at the back but have done well.
Palace 0 Wolves 1

chicagowolf

Looking again at the early one Costa missed, he really is not (unsurprisingly) very sharp but he clearly wants it.
Bueno was good, B.Traore working them but now on a yellow he may need to come off or tone it down.
Deserved first half lead but they do have some dangerous players

Lupy
18/10/2022 21:15
Such a change in the team application, constant movement, chasing back, closing down rapidly and not afraid to put a tackle in, much better since Bruno left. Sure the play still has some way to go but I'm not complaining. Boubacar Traore seems to have settled straight in and young Hugo doesn't seem phased at all, and what a cross for the goal. Costa looking a little off the pace but his aggression is unnerving for the Palace defence. Semedo coping well with Zaha who is already getting frustrated and heading towards a card if he's not careful.

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 21:20
Delighted for Adama getting his goal after so long, and for Bueno - the Managers gave him his chance rather than putting Jonny on the left and he has played well &his cross for the goal was superb. Wolves players out first looking keen to get on.

Palace are more energetic now and stringing some good passes together. Costa still struggling to have much impact on the game.

Podence fed by Adama and puts the ball just over the bar but gets a corner. Guedes being prepared

Guedes on for Adama, Hodge on for Nunes and Joao on for B Traore

Cheshire wolf

Corner to Palace cleared. Wolves attack but fizzle out. Bueno does really well to get into box but finishes with a poor pass.

2-1 Zaha goal

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 21:47
Excellent passage of okay by Palace ends with an overhead effort by Edouarde which goes just wide. Podence stays down after a challenge but no free kick so he eventually gets up.
Zaha fed by a Edouard and puts it away easily
Palace 2 Wolves 1

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 21:49
Hwang being prepared no doubt for Costa who is still not having an impact

Cheshire wolf

Costa gets into a row with 2 Palace defenders then leaves the field!!

Cheshire wolf

Edouard & Olise replaced by Mateta and Ayew

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 22:03
VAR look at a possible penalty for hand ball for Wolves but not given this time. Guedes unlucky not to be able to get a decent shot away from the rebound. Neves brings a save & Hodge can’t get on to the rebound for a shot.

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 22:05
Collins misses an open goal, but Guedes was offside before he crossed it

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 22:08
5 added minutes and Wolves are still getting into the box but no final threat

Cheshire wolf
18/10/2022 22:15
Final whistle goes and Wolves fail to maintain the promise they showed in the first half when they took the lead. Palace were much improved in second half and Zaha was a constant threat which ultimately told when he scored the winner. Wolves huffed and puffed but rarely actually threatened in front of goal. We now need a result against the bottom team on Sunday.
Palace 2 Wolves 1

I've no idea how anyone can think we have improved since lage went, if anything we look worse. That said, my grandmother had a near death experience years ago and was convinced the face of jesus was in her cup of tea each morning.. sometimes we are looking for things that arent there.

Calamity collins up to his usual tricks, costa clearly not match fit, the midfield having the mobility of a geriatric tortoise.. we're going down if the managerial appointment is a poor one. We were lucky not to be behind after the palace shot hit the post early on and despite an excellent performance from adama we were well beaten by the better team

2-1 final. Zaha get his usual winner.
After the equaliser which they got when we were asleep after halftime we were back to the usual. Plenty of energy, bits of skill, no final ball.
Bueno was great. Hwang played his typical game, thankfully not for long, and the subs gave us a spark but we were not good enough

What a let down after leading at ht. Don't understand why adama was taken off so early, a big mistake he looked our most dangerous player.
Unfortunately there's a soft underbelly to this team, bruno has destroyed the spine of the team whoever comes in has a hell of a job to sort this mess out.
Still can't see where the goals are going to come from and that's a big worry.
Plus point I thought the kid bueno had a good a game.
Semedo at fault for both goals, really poor defending.
No more messing about by Shi he has to get a new manager in this week.

Ivybridge Wolf

What a total disappointment after HT and all thoughts to what might have been if the Neves free kick had been two inches the other way.

I felt Palace were the better side, more dangerous throughout, much more neat and tidy and more consistently menacing. Having said that I’ve seen us play a lot worse this season, in the first half we didn’t do badly at all, a lovely and well worked goal. I thought our balance was much better in that opening 45.

Second half was very different and bar a late 10 minute spell, Palace showed us a clean pair of heals. Personally I didn’t think the subs did a great deal for us, but fully understand why they were made …. Bar pulling Adama off that is.

Bueno was probably the biggest positive of the night, thought he played pretty well. I was frustrated again by Podence and the Guedes cameo hasn’t yet changed my mind about him. Traore. B. played okay, though his yellow placed him on the back foot. Costa has the fire, but alas not the pace.

And so we have now played 11 matches and only 9 points. It’s another Molineux 6 pointer on Sunday v Leicester and in the interim, all eyes on other results to see if we drop back into the bottom 3.

The worry continues!!

Essington, I agree about Semedo, a great move by Palace for the second goal in particular, but the tracking by Nelson on the ever annoying Zaha was pretty shocking. Nowhere to be seen for the headed first either.

What a disappointing result. Could have been three up at half time which would have put it beyond a Palace recovery but our impotence in front of goal cost us again. A shambles of a second half, we were second best in every position. Searching for positives Bueno did well on his debut and Boubacar Traore looks a decent signing, again, a not too shabby debut. Assuming we are going to lose Neves, and possibly some others the squad is nowhere near strong enough and the new manager, when he arrives, has a big job on his hands to rescue anything at all this season.
