Match Thread: Wolves vs Manchester City

Midfield Maestros

By Wolves
May 11 2022

The pressure is off Wolves before their game against Manchester City at Molineux this evening!! All the attention will be on whether City can win three points to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League, and few will be concerned as to whether the home team can garner more points towards achieving European football next season.

Manchester City will come to Molineux this evening desperately keen to leave with three points in their search for their first - and only - silverware of the season by keeping up their battle with Liverpool to be Champions again. Wolves however will be bouyed by their late equaliser at Chelsea at the weekend, and will go into the game hoping to repeat the success they have enjoyed against City in the past, notably at Christmas in 2019 when they ran out 3 - 2 winners. Indeed Wolves need to win 2 of their last 3 games to stand a chance of ending up higher than West Ham in the League in their quest for 7th place.

City have already declared that they will be without Ruben Dias, Kyle Walker and John Stones, with Nathan Ake also a doubt. However this is unlikely to destabilise them as they seek to continue a run of 16 away games without defeat, 13 of which have been wins.

Wolves will be without Nelson Semedo, Max Kilman and Daniel Podence who are all injured. Romain Saiss will be assessed having limped off at Chelsea. The question is still relative as to whether the youngsters such as Chiquinho, Fabio Silva and Toti Gomes should start. Trincao may have earned himself a starting place with his superb goal at Chelsea. It also hasn't been declared yet whether Bruno Lage will be at the game after his Covid isolation, or whether he will again be watching it at Compton and communicating with his depleted staff team.

The game has a late kick off scheduled for 8:15pm and will be screened by Sky Soccer and Sky Main Event. Our referee will be Martin Atkinson, whoi also refereed the 2019 game and sent City keeper Edinson off soon after kick off. He will be supported on VAR duties by Paul Tierney.

This board will endeavour to offer a regular update of the action and members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation during and after the game.

All systems go for national eyes to land on Wolves …… well, Manchester City!

Can we carry forward the last 20 minutes (plus 7 glorious added minutes) into tonight’s match or will it be more of the previous 270 plus the initial 70 at Stamford Bridge.

I’m optimistic in as much I believe we can and should carry forward our Chelsea finish. Manchester City are a wonderful side and they completely dismantled Newcastle on Sunday, though the ray of light for us is the defensive injuries they have. In order to maximise, we cannot afford to be so wasteful in front of goal though.

Ever hopeful

One change for tonight as Saiss is unfit he is replaced on the left side probably by Boly with Dendoncker on the right side. Chiquinho gets his well deserved first start. So an attacking line-up fielded by Bruno Lage. Also interesting to see Yerson Mosquera return to the squad. Line-up:

No Toti, it’s Donk, Neto and Chiq starting but no Trincao. RAN and Jonny the wing backs

Dendoncker in back line, Chiquino starts and Trincao & Fabio on bench.
Mouthino alongside Neves in impenetrable midfield (we hope).
Another big result against City? It's the hope that gets you.

Against all logic I have a feeling we could do well tonight. Should be a good match, City will need to go for it so we will have to be on our toes but our forte is the counter so who knows.
Cmon lads replicate that last 20 minutes against Chelsea and you will have the Mol rocking.

A quite superb left footed dru=ive by De Bruyne into the bottom left hand corner defeating Sa for pace and accuracy.

Anyway, as for tonight, it ay over til it’s over. Wolves at least seeing more of the ball and with some attacking intent in the last 5 minutes

Too right Lupine H. It hurts but its true. We’ve played a hell of a lot worse than this but even so City are controlling everything to be honest.

We’re only 2 goals behind but making a comeback tonight would represent a massive turn around at this stage.

Chiq looks bright enough, there have been sparks of Wolves initiative but overall outclassed so far.

The comment i made was an objective comment so I dont get your point Cheshire? Could you not just say,, " I dont agree with you Irish". Or would you prefer if I was a happy clapper... happy that we average 1 goal a game over the last 2 years? Happy that we were knocked out of the FA Cup by a poor side? Happy that we put ourselves into a position to qualify for the Top Four only to stumble when the pressure came on? Happy that we dont have a recognised top goalscorer? I think my comments are objective.

Irish your input on this forum has always been and continues to be welcome. I was simply stating that whilst pretty infrequent it is in my view always negative. Perhaps if you had acknowledged our wins at Man Utd or Spurs for example I would think otherwise. Why should we feel fantastic when we beat an average premiership team? anyway im off this site for good,,,, i have watched numerous posters being driven away due to smart and / or nasty comments by people who are full of their own importance and think they own this site... Should have been more sensible with my prediction.

I backed us to win with a cover bet to draw. All lost. What can we do with an opposition like that?

We have been slaughtered this eveing by a side who will surely win the league. Manchester City were just outstanding but sadly we could not live with them. I credit our players for not giving up, they tried to retain momentum and get forward when we could but we were just complete alsorans tonight. To be honest, by over relaxing in the second half, that is not being clinical enough, Man City could have scored 8 or 9 tonight. Such is the gulf.

Some positives for us, in addition to not throwing in the towel, I thought Neto was okay and in particularly Chiq showed what he can do, a lad who wants to get forward and get in at the defences.

We have been used to taking such sides close over the last few seasons, not tonight, the balance is clearly not correct however I just hope the Molineux faithful get their reward versus Norwich on saturday, our fans deserve a final performance to entertain and send us into the closed season with a little hope. No doubt about the need for the surgical knife in our side during the summer.

Unusually from me, a final word to the key man, a player of shear brilliance. When you see a player of such utter quality, not just in inherent ability but also his immense vision and work rate and who is capable of doing the ugly stuff too, then you have to hold your hand up and say it how it is. Kevin De Bruyne is an utterly fantastic player. Congratulations to him in cementing our misery.

Men against boys simple as that. Totally outclassed, I didn't expect to get a wolves win tonight but if you are going to have a chance against city you have to fight for every ball and be in their faces sadly I didn't see that tonight. I know city will rip most defences apart but I thought our defence was awful tonight and has been now for a while. Big changes needed in the summer for sure, let's hope bruno gets some backing because if he doesn't I think we are in big trouble next season.

Cheshire I dont really care what your opinion is of me..... but i wasnt gonna let you away with a smart Axxx comment.... regarding the Man Utd win, i cant remember if i commented or not... as you say, im not on this site as much as i use to be but is this the same Man Utd who Brighton beat 4-0 the other day and who Watford hammered earlier in the season?? Why should we feel fantastic when we beat an average premiership team? anyway im off this site for good,,,, i have watched numerous posters being driven away due to smart and / or nasty comments by people who are full of their own importance and think they own this site... It use to be a great site but not anymore. Adios.

Sorry to read that Irish, though in my opinion those nasty comments / spats you likely refer to have long since gone, at least IMO. The traffic on this site is definitely not what it was, for sure, folk who now contribute are no less passionate about the team, we’ve developed a community however we are a group that, again in my opinion, always welcome newcomers and those who wish to return alike. Those who regularly post still celebrate the wins, dislike the losses and can see where our problems lie. I’d say all who contribute do so in a positive manner however it is evident we see matters differently, that’s normal. Nobody is denied their say or opinion.

As for the moderating, it’s a labour of love I can assure you, I think (have always thought) Chesh does a great job and I enjoy supporting him in the running.

Good evening /morning gentlemen, long time no see in these grim times. I got logged out 18 months ago yet again unable to log in, so accompanied by a general apathy with proceedings, have had an unpaid sabbatical so to speak.

Where to begin.. regarding Lage I think people advocating removing a manager that has the club currently 8th with the ever diminishing input from fosun providing transfer funds is overachieving not underachieving with people unfairly screaming for his dismissal. Playing devils advocate, what manager would get more goals from a strike force of post injury Raul/ the hapless Silva and others? I doubt those players particularly Silva who is possibly the worst signing in wolves history taking into account money paid since Roger Johnson... he rivals worzel for technique with less pace than Miss Daisy driving a 3 wheeled robin reliant enroute to church on a Sunday morning.

The midfield is utterly pathetic, a geriatric Moutinho, Neves who carries the midfield at times with the " replacements " dendonkey and players like Cundle that have no business anywhere near a premier league 11. Last summer we were screaming out for depth and quality with some pace in linking midfield to attack yet got nothing... why people think Lage should be sacked I've no idea. The only reason we aren't in a relegation battle is a fairly strong defence and decent keeper coupled with the manager although there are worrying signs in recent games he is exasperated by the stagnation of the club filtering down from fosun whom we never seem to hear from.

I think the days of fosun are limited, covid has obviously damaged many clubs but for us with Chinese owners you have to question the relationship dynamics of any Chinese business when affiliated with the west. If that wasn't bad enough we now have the Ukraine war with Chinas relations strained further due to lack of condemnation of Putins aggression and I think it's fanciful to think the summer transfer budget will be substantial.

The last 2 years have been like the apocalypse- all we need is SPRH to rock up in a caravan to complete the full list of horrors. In relation to the football in recent times, it's been incredibly dull to watch and realising the best we can achieve realistically is a top 8 finish each season with a good run in a cup, there is a feeling the club has hit the ceiling of what it can aspire to. It's admirable others have found the enthusiasm to watch each game, but personally have found my weekends taken up desperately hunting for streams frequently breaking down to watch more clean sheets at the wrong end not worth sacrificing the afternoon for.

Cheers Lupine, hope you're keeping well, I see Cedric is facing relegation again the prediction league. He has been re elected more times than Accrington stanley over the years.

Ty essington, granted in the "is the glass half full or half empty" debate I question whether there is infact a glass there at all but there are a few sparse drops from time to time 🍷to lift the perpetual doom

No luck is needed lupine, as a multiple former winner class is permanent

Fair point but despite the teams, the prediction league is an individual sport where personnel remains the same. What streams are people using these days, hesgoals has finished premier coverage and reddit didnt work yesterday

Cream rises to the top, as we know 😂, I felt like a season or two off winning this year. Good to see you posting again Angry, welcome!! Stream Bible and Ovo Streams sometimes work but everything has been total hit and miss since the demise of Hesgoal.

As for our side, much to say, much to think about, ultimately this is the summer when Fosun will be really judged, especially in terms of signings but we know Rome wasn’t built in a day ! 😳😳

Ty Ivy, I was preparing the infamous Rome line, but you beat me to it sadly so the moment has been taken away from me grinning smiley

Regarding wolves, many people considering the lost players of Docherty, Jota etc and subsequent lack of recruitment expected us to be flirting with a relegation battle so to finish top half is exceeding expectations. The fact the likes of Cundle need to be promoted to the first team says it all. Many may rightly lament the lack of goals which make our matches akin to watching paint dry but we had the same issues under Nuno where he had a pre injury Jimenez in attack. Fosun are decent owners, a serious upgrade from beetroot head and Moxey, but lack of investment has cost us a european place this season. If Bruno had the players Nuno had, I think he would be heralded as a decent manager with a place in the Europa nailed on... fine lines and all that.
