Match Thread: Wolves vs Brighton & HA

Three Main Men

By Wolves
April 30 2022

After two very poor displays in recent away games Wolves today face the challenge of scoring at least one goal and trying to win three points against Brighton and Hove Albion

Molineux will no doubt be full again today with fans desperate to see a good performance from their team, and some home goals in the search for another three points, to maintain their position chasing European football, which, admittedly has seemed to slip from their reach following the last two results at Newcastle and Burnley. However Wolves injury problems persist, with three important players - Ruben Neves, Daniel Podence and Max Kilman - still unavailable for selection, and whilst this may not particularly impact on the defence, the attack has been struggling to form a cohesive and effective forward line, and to score goals.

Brighton have had a very mixed season - after a good start when they were in the top ten of the league with Wolves they lost form and dropped off, particularly in their home games, but of late they have picked up again and find themselves in 11th place, 8 points below Wolves.   Their Manager Graham Potter sxeems to maintain a high regard within the game and is frequently quoted as being in consideration when vacancies occur within high performing clubs.

Today's game is scheduled for a 3pm kick off and will not feature on any TV channels, so once again we have to hope for a decent stream to be able to follow it.

Our referee today will be Simon Hooper, with Michael Salisbury (whoever he is!!) on VAR duty

This board will endeavour to provide regular updates subject to a good stream, and members are encouraged to post their own observations and join the conversation.

And the surprising good news is that Ruben Neves is fit after all to start. He replaces Raul Jimenez and will be part of a five man midfield. Rayan Ait-Nouri also returns replacing Jonny. Line-up:

Good news that Neves is back ….. hope the injury has fully recovered because we need him. A bit of Wolves kidology that he wouldn’t play?

Good to see Ait Nouri back.

Powerhouse of a front line so expect plenty of goals today 😂

Irrespective of they line up, as usual good luck to the team and as much as I’d love to see a great performance, I’d be even happier with 3 points

Good stop by Jose to keep out a fierce Mwepu shot for a corner, which ends up being smashed wide by Mac Allister

I have pictures but they are stopping and starting and zero sound!
It’s 0-0 after 22!!
I meant to have a bet for 0-0 at HT and 0-0 at FT but forgot.

BHA attack again but Trossard is offside. Another penalty given again st us for a foul by Semedo and agreed by VAR Mac Allister takes again and scores this time

Definitely a penalty but my god Sa got close to it ….. and it was a very well taken penalty.

Just as well I didn’t put my bet on.

Half time whistle and some boo’s ring out.

I’m mainly following things via the Wolves commentary. Thommo comments as same old, same old, no quality going forward. No threat.

Sad

From what I’ve seen through all the interruptions I would have to agree with Thommo. We look good in midfield but have very little threat upfront and Fabio is getting very little service in truth, but when he does he doesn’t look confident of scoring. Only seen the penalty once but it looked pretty bob on, whilst I thought Saiss was a bit unlucky to concede his. Sick of us giving away penalties this season!!

It was Boly who accidentally tripped Welbeck for the pen

Lupy
30/04/2022 15:56
From what I have seen it feels that BHA have us sussed, we are unable to sustain any attacking threat and our play is easily broken up by the visitors.
If we were a little more toothless, opposition teams might risk playing without a keeper!!
Need some strong words from Bruno during the break.
Let's have Neto and Raul on quickly.

Fabio & Ruben replaced by Raul & Neto at the start of 2nd half

Cheshire wolf

Semedo fed by Jose, chases after the ball then pulls up, looks like his hamstring injury is back. Expect Jonny will replace him

Ivybridge Wolf
30/04/2022 16:11
He’s hooked Fabio over Hwang for the second time. Interesting if nothing else. Given the choice, I’d have took them both off but other than Raul where do we go.

Is Neves fit? Same could be said of Neto ….. C’mon Wolves

Semedo goes down unchallenged - looks like a nasty one, his knee twisted badly

30/04/2022 16:19
Mistake by Joao picked up by Welbeck but his shot is easily taken by Sa. Up other end with Neto but his cross is poor. Very impressed by Cucarella for BHA - solid in defence & attack

Cheshire wolf
30/04/2022 16:24
Dunk upends Raul & gets a yellow card free kick hits the wall & goes for a corner. We are still pretty toothless upfront and are yet to have a shot on target!!

Moutinho with a free kick - really weak, sadly, straight at the wall.

When I can see the match, we’re not looking very threatening to be honest.

Hello all. Been unable to watch any of the last matches, so can't comment on the specifics of end of season performances. Seems the season has just stalled and gone adrift, and Lage is relying too much on Neves for inspiration. Hard to explain why the belief and energy has drained away so dramatically though.

Yep, ffing pathetic.
They used to say end of season form often transfers over to the beginning of the next. I hope not, we’re relegation fodder based on current form. Just no idea.
As a midfielder I commend Moutinho for getting back to cover Trossard but having done so, please try and make a tackle or do something to get the ball. Dreadful, but once again it’s not an individuals fault, this is a failure from the whole team.
NB: I reserve the right to re-write this analysis if we have a Villa style comeback 😭

Fans are leaving in droves. Another corner to Wolves which Willy Boly eventually heads on target but easily collected. Down the other end a shot from outside the area by Bissouma nestles in the corner far too easily. We are rubbish

Wow.

0-3 and what a pile of absolute Shi!te we are.

Great finish from Bassouma but we invited Brighton to press with all the time and space they needed.

Moments before I was celebrating with a dual shot from Neto and a header from Boly. I can report both were on target.

Fans are leaving Molineux faster than the proverbial poop off a shovel.

Neto hits the post and gets a cheer but then the final whistle goes and the cheers are converted to boo’s which are only muted because there aren’t many fans left.

A truly awful, dispiriting, lacklustre performance which continues the notion that we have no ability to score a goal. Not good enough and we have been dreadfully exposed.

Who minds losing? Okay never ideal, but if you fight and go down, fair enough, but when you capitulate meekly and weekly and without a whimper, then that is not acceptable.

Woeful performance. Didn't deserve to get anything out of this match with the way we played, I am very patient (you have to be as a Wolves supporter) but I am beginning to doubt the quality of our manager, seems unable to fashion a team of quality individuals into a presentable force, quite the opposite in fact, he seems to be nullifying all their individual qualities. If he gets his type of player in during the transfer window it needs to be effective very quickly or he may need to go.

Neto hits the post in the last action of the game. An absolute shambles reminiscent of the drubbing Burnley gave us last season. Brighton we’re excellent and we had no answer to them at all, not even getting a shot on target. Bruno Lage persists with his faith in Hwang who contributes very little to the game, and I’m beginning to wonder if Bruno is out of his depth.
A dreadful game from Wolves perspective - on that we were supposed to win by all accounts. Some folk must wonder how the hell we are in 8th position when we can’t score goals!!

Then Brighton bogey strikes again. They must love playing us. Completely out-played. By my reckoning we had one effort on target. At home. Against Brighton. And that was a powder puff header from Boly which, to be honest I could have saved.
It's the same old, same old. Once we concede a goal we are never going to win.
I was hopeful when Neto and Raul came on at half-time but let's be honest, they made no difference at all. I suppose Neto hasn't played that much but neither look anywhere near the players they were before injury.
No ffp excuses this summer.

Listen folks, with Burnley winning again, we could be Everton fans …… I’m looking at scraps to be honest.

I do wonder about Bruno too, who wouldn’t with how things are going, though my mind switches more to the depth and quality of the squad and those issues were there at the start of the season and it hasn’t gone away. Yes, we’ve had bad injuries but so do every side.

We simply don’t have the quality up front, exposed because since his return, Raul hasn’t hit the ground running. I’m not just talking about the front line either, it’s about support from the midfield, who wants to make that run with the ball, who’s looking for the quick pass rather than the slow slow slow build we actually adopt. Have we the players to do that? Have we got the players to take a risk and take a shot?

Fosun have some big decisions to make closed season. Are they in it to win it, as they announced so many times when we were on the up? What signals have they been sending us over the last few years.

Just listening to the aftermath of the commentary - an interesting stat on our mentality at present - when we go behind, we have only won 3 points from a losing position this season - unlike 22, 15 and 14 the previous seasons. We just aren’t tough enough.

Whatever, nothing excuses that hideous performance in front of our won fans. Inexcusable.

Anyway, no worries, Chelsea next, then Man City, Norwich and Liverpool. At this moment, even Norwich, freshly relegated today, will pose us big problems on current form.

The players should hang their heads in shame after that showing, absolutely gutless performance. That's as poor as it gets one effort on target all game. The players looked lost out there today, hate to say it but they played liked they wanted to get the manager sacked, something not right in the camp surely we ain't that bad are we? That was worse than anything nunos team served up last season. The last few performances have been shocking, bruno is on rocky ground if this carries on. The next few games don't give us much hope either.
