Match Thread: Newcastle United vs Wolves

Taking his chance

By Wolves
April 8 2022

Wolves face their longest journey of the season today when they travel to St James Park, Newcastle for this evening's Premier League match against the team striving to remain outside the relegation places, following their recent climb away from the danger zone.

Wolves coach Bruno Lage remains keen to chase the possibility of achieving European football for next season by getting as many wins as possible in the remaining games this season, and will no doubt be keen to follow up the convincing defeat of Villa last weekend with another win. He knows he will be without Raul Jimenez - who sits out his second match through suspension - and Ruben Neves who is injured, but Nelson Semedo is now back in training following his hamstring injury. It can be reasonably expected that Fabio Silva will feature in attack again, especially after the plaudits he received for his performance against Villa, and we must wonder whether the two goal hero of our home game against Newcastle - Hwang Hee Chan - will also start tonight.

All Wolves fans will no doubt be absolutely delighted to see how Jonny has fared since returning from his dreadful spell on the injury list, and indeed even though he is playing on the right side of defence rather than the more customary left side in Wolves colours. Romain Saiss missed out on the last game after a busy International break, but he may return to the starting Xl this evening, although Max Kilman and Willy Boly performed well in defence alongside Conor Coady.

After a run of good results which helped them escape from the relegation battle, Eddie Howe's United have lost their last three games and need an upturn in results to maintain their hope for a mid table finish, although all those games were played away. He will definitely be hoping that the St James Park atmosphere will help them in tonight's game, although he already has a casualty as striker Joe Willock is unfit to play.

Tonight's officials will be our referee Peter Bankes with new boy Jarred Gillett on VAR duty. The game will be featured live on Sky TV's 'Friday Night Football' and will kick off at 8:00pm

This board will endeavour to carry regular updates on the progress of the game. Members are encouraged to join in the conversation with their own observations and comments for the benefit of those unable to otherwise follow the match.

Could be a tough night ahead with Newcastle looking to steady their ship after a few disappointing results. I would like to see RAN replace Marcal and be given license to take on their defenders otherwise would be happy to see the same team that saw Aston Villa limp to a defeat. Three points keeps us in the mix for a European adventure, cmon lads.

Two changes for Wolves tonight with Hwang replacing Podence and Cundle starting in place of Dendoncker, which will be a surprise to many of us!! Line-up:

So here we go and it looks like Utd plan to press high up. Coady has hurt himself but playing through it

Lupy

Newcastle on the front foot early on but our lads looking quite comfortable at the moment.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:10
Even stevens so far although Jose Sa has already had to cut out a cross to Wood. Ryan Fraser has pulled up with possible muscle injury- carrying on for now

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:11
Most of the play in our half at the moment, we need to string a few passes together.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:12
Fraser down again & looks like Almiron will replace him. He’s a tricky little player who scored against us at the Mol 2 seasons ago

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:14
Ryan Fraser pulls his hamstring Almirante replaces him.

Cheshire wolf

Wolves are not making the most of possession yet

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:19
We are handing the initiative to Newcastle and if we don’t get on the front foot soon we will pay the price.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:22
United are going over our defence & trying to get behind us, Almiron shoots over but was probably offside

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:23
Haven’t got anywhere near their penalty area yet but a lot of hard running to hold Newcastle at bay.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:24
Chaotic defending after Maxgave the ball away & Wood scores again against whilst down on the ground. VAR to check possible offside and goal disallowed

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:26
Jonny gets our first shot away but too high

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:27
Goal disallowed.

Match opening up now and we get some movement forward at last.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:33
We are very poor upfront so far - Hwang is offering nothing

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:35
It seems we are unable at the moment to be too adventurous .
Slowly getting into the game.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:40
Utter rubbish from Wolves playing from centre circle back to Sa, no effort to attack at all

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:43
Max not having the best game so far, loose passes regularly putting us under pressure.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:46
Good play by Fabioto Jonny then tries to get on the end of it, but Hwang is too slow getting into the box. 3 added minutes to play

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:48
Three minutes of extra time, can’t come soon enough.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 20:52
Soft free kick to Utd in a dangerous position but the wall stands up well. Half time whistle blows. A very poor first 45 mins from us when we were very lucky VAR went our way to call offside when Wood scored. We have reverted to passing sideways and backwards again, particularly Hwang who has been absolutely rubbish and I personally cannot see why we value him at £11 million!!!
Newcastle 0 Wolves 0

Lupy
08/04/2022 20:56
A poor match so far and Newcastle seem to be the most motivated.
Bruno needs to shake them up during the break. Hwang was almost invisible during that first half although service was dire. Neither goalkeeper tested which sort of sums it up.
I would have Chiquinho and RAN on soon to run at the opposition.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:05
Second half underway with no further changes

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:08
Newcastle quick out of the blocks again.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:10
Marcal gets our first corner but wasted.

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:13
Bruno must have had a word, Wolves looking a bit sharper and playing with a bit more intent

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:13
Good chance for Dan Burn but too close to Jose. At last Hwang attacks into the area but his shot is blocked

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:16
Good play by Fabio - too quick for Schaer who brings him down & gets a yellow card. Fabio then just misses a chance

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:17
Wolves coming alive at last.

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:19
Quicker and more purposeful passing by Wolves is beginning to cause Newcastle some problems.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:20
San Maximan trying all his tricks but getting no change out of our defence. Schar now down injured

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:24
Fabio is chasing everything & really trying to attack when he has the ball. Ref ignores a foul on Hwang & Utd break until San Maximan puts it over the bar. Then he breaks and puts it across but Wood is too slow getting there

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:24
Maxi an blazes over following mistake br Hwang

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:28
Game opening up now which hopefully will play into our hands.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:31
Jose Sa concedes another penalty when Wood goes over his leg, after putting the ball out. Jose really didn’t need to go near him. Wood puts it away

08/04/2022 21:34
Poor penalty given away. Catalogue of errors preceded it.
No reason not to go for it now, 20 minutes left.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:34
Hwang gives the ball away again & Utd break again. Joao deflects a shot out for a corner. Neto & Chem Campbell being prepared

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:37
Hwang & Trink replaced after both have had a very poor night.

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:38
Marcal puts a good cross in & Fabio heads wide - poor!

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:39
Bruno not afraid to try new blood.

Fabio brings a good save out of Dubravka

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:41
Good effort by Fabio

Cheshire wolf

Ait-Nouri replaces Marcal

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:48
Joao fouls Guimares & gets a yellow card. Into final 3 minutes. CC puts a great ball in for Neto but he just can’t connect

Cheshire wolf
08/04/2022 21:49
4 added minutes

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:49
Five minutes to go and we have generally been on the front foot.

Lupy
08/04/2022 21:51
Four minutes added time

All over after a very poor performance by a Wolves. We made a very average United tea look good. Jose Sa gave away another penalty when he didn’t need to go near Woid who had already put the ball into touch, but knew how to ensure contact. Hwang and Trincao were exceptionally poor tonight & Fabio couldn’t do it all on his own despite trying to.
All the talk is about playing European football next season, but on this showing we wouldn’t last five minutes. We desperately missed Neves and Raul tonight, and I fail to understand why we should even consider signing Hwang.
Newcastle Utd 1 Wolves 0

Lupy

A really disjointed performance from Wolves, showing how much we missed some of our senior players. A very poor first half followed by improvement in the second but put to the sword by a penalty craftily won by Chris Woods.
Hwang was poor and Neto did more in the few minutes he got, Fabio is no replacement for Raul yet but didn’t disgrace himself. Young Luke Cundle worked hard and should be reasonably happy with his contribution but helped massively by Moutinho who was doing all the positive work for us.
We were by far the better team in the second half but didn’t have the guile to open Newcastle up.
Onwards and upwards.

How disappointing was that? a really poor performance making a poor toon team look half decent. We were so poor first half surely bruno should of made changes at ht. He waited to long for me how did you just know he would wait till we were a goal down, just to late. I'm with you chesh on hwang he doesn't convince me one bit and trincao has had about 1 decent game in a wolves shirt he was awful tonight but he wasn't the only one. Great chance missed tonight and i think the chance of European football has gone up in smoke! Just shows the fringe players are not good enough.

Couldn't get a stream for the first half but it seems as though I had a lucky escape.
2nd half we never looked like scoring apart from a shot by Fabio that the 'keeper put round the post.
I fear any chance we had of European football has gone with this defeat. Too early to give up on it I know, but with three of our remaining matches against Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea, we needed something out of this.
I agree with Chesh regarding Hwang. After making a decent start for us earlier in the season, he now appears to offer little. If Neto is considered fit enough to play 90 mins, he has to start surely.

Peed off with the result and sad to see the comments which having read the BBC and texts from friends collectively add up to a very poor performance. A match to have missed, which of course I did!

Just no consistency in this team which has such capability and delivers as much as it fails. Bottom line is lack of depth in players.

Any side starting with those front 3 tonight is going to be on the back foot; based on the laws of average, but it does go deeper, I know.

A week off next week …. Man City are in the semi’s, wished we had a quicker opportunity to reverse this evening.

A totally shocking performance. No positives whatsoever. Bruno talks a great game but I have lost faith in him. His post match interview was nonsense. He said that Wolves controlled the game in the first half! What on earth is he talking about? We had 1 attempt at goal that was off target and we had 1 corner kick!
One of the worst games of football I have ever seen. The only winners at wolves at the moment are the transfer agents.

A terrible match on Friday, no excuses, but with Man Utd losing to Everton, West Ham losing to Brentford and even Arsenal losing to Brighton, we may have got away with it, although I can't see us catching Arsenal. UTW.
