Match Thread: Wolves vs Liverpool FC

By Wolves
December 4 2021

Wolves fans will surely be looking forward to today's challenge in hope rather than anticipation, especially considering the way the opposition have won their last four games by huge margins. However Wolves have done it before and fans will hope they can repeat the recent achievement against West Ham.

It is unboubtedly a formidable challenge ahead of the Wolves team, as Bruno Lage takes on Liverpool for the first time whilst they are in the midst of a superb winning streak. Wolves have kept a clean sheet for the last three games but have only managed to score once in those games.  Wednesday night's game at home to Burnley proved fruitless in terms of goals even though Wolves created many scoring opportunities, and for this reason today's team selection will be critical. Whilst the defence are performiong well in games, the midfield and strike force are struggling to convert chances and stamp any authority on games.

The media are creating headlines around the fact that Wolves will have six players missing from today's line-up, but these are mainly long-term injuries involving the likes of Jonny and Neto. Willy Boly has already joined the injury list, whilst Marcal is now also unavailable after testing positive for Covid-19. Daniel Podence will hopefully be available after his Covid experience and be challenging for a starting place. It is perhaps likely that Traore will retain his place after he went closest to scoring on Wednesday, and perhaps we might see Hwang drop to the bench after his influence on games has waned in recent weeks.  Ruben Neves is also available for selection after missing the midweek game serving a one match suspension for five yellow cards

Diogo Jota is likely to make another return to Molineux and we must hope it will not be another scroing visit as it was in March.

The game will kick off at 3pm with Chris Kavanagh refereeing and Jonathan Moss on VAR duty. Depending on the availability of a decent stream this board will endeavour to provide regular updates on the match, and board members are also encouraged to post their observations for the benefit of those otherwise unable to follow it.

So Joao Moutinho fails to start a league game for the first time this season, and Ruben Neves starts alongside Dendoncker. Traore retains his place in the front three too. Line-up:

The back 5 pick themselves plus Sa.

Interestingly Neves is in for Moutinho and Donk keeps his place. I think is a good choice. The discussion will be about Traore / Podence / Trincao / Hwang. I think on balance Traore deserves his place as does Hwang, at least both of them to start. It’s a big test for our creative player and even on Wednesdays night of frustration, we looked more dangerous on the break …. Perhaps that will be our most productive attacking style today? I just hope the front 2 or 3 just be a bit closer together, create angles and combinations ….. having said that, the defence will get it’s severest test of the season so far.

My heart is making a case for a win today. I’m sticking with my heart!!

If we manage to get something out of this game I will be very happy, it’s going to be one of our hardest tests to date and will be a measure of the progress we have made in the short time that Bruno has been in charge.
I would see a point as a victory.

Afternoon All
I must say just looking at the Liverpool line-up, not just the front three makes me nervous, but we have to believe we can get something out of this game. And we haven’t had a penalty yet this season!!!

Semedo does well to see the ball out for a corner with Sane close in behind him. Corner cleared.
Good play from Wolves for a throw in on our left wing.

Ivybridge Wolf
04/12/2021 15:07
We’ve had a corner. Could have been even better. Raul had an opportunity to get the ball in the box with two waiting. The resultant corner come to nothing

Raul gets a corner off Matip. Neves offside.
Liverpool haven’t quite got their passing eye in yet.
The crowd break into applause on 6th minute for Harry

Jota getting booed with each touch. Personally I don’t get that. A terrific Wolves player

Good defending by Saiss to deny Salah for a corner which is well cleared. tTA puts a delightful ball across our area which Jota makes sure he gets to but heads it wide

Ivybridge Wolf
04/12/2021 15:34
30 minutes gone. It’s mainly stout defending from Wolves with moments from us going forward, the most likely for us looks a Traore breakaway at the moment.

TAA whips in a terrific cross, luckily Jotas head failed to direct and it flashed past the South Bank post.

Another Liverpool corner - easily collected by Sa

The ball is not sticking to us ….. wow!! Sala big miss from a Robertson cross …… Mane could / should have scored too. Saiss just did enough on Sala.

Coady is injured and down …. Didn’t see how.

Definitely should be 0-1

The last 5-10, it’s been all Liverpool

There you go, HT. Int he last 3 minutes we had two reasonable attack, the second some deft jinking from RAN in an advanced LW position, beats two, goes into the box and a real spooner of a shoot ends up going for a throw.

Overall we are doing … okay. Very few moments of attacking excitement and yes Liverpool have created the best chances but only 2-3 and I have to say that we have defended very well.

Another 45 to go. Would be lovely to Knick a goal in this one. It could happen!!

Not too shabby at all and we now need one of our famous second halves to try and get something out of this match. The Bruno style of play seems to be settling in quite nicely everyone seems to know what they are doing, even Traore.

Dreadful pass back from Neves let Jota in but Salah couldn’t make anything of it when he got the ball. Up the other end Chan gets into the area but can’t make it count. Corner to Reds. Pinball in the area and Sa clears a Thiago effort but he’s offside

Ivybridge Wolf
04/12/2021 16:10
I’ve been trying to identify this commentary. Is it Portuguese?

A squeaky bum moment when Neves gives away to Liverpool but they mess it up. Sa clears an Traore dispossess Van Dyk and creates a chance for Hwang. Comes to nothing.

Then a Liverpool corner leads to a mad scramble and Sa saves with his foor …. Unconventional but effective.

Liverpool are turning the heat up, you sense

Most of the possession belongs to Reds at the moment but Wolves are getting chances to break but just not managing them very well.

Cheshire wolf
04/12/2021 16:20
Free kick to Wolves leads to good work by HCH then a snap shot by Donk well saved, down the other end shocking mix up involving Sa but Jota cannot score past Saiss & CC with Sa nowhere to be seen!

Ivybridge Wolf
04/12/2021 16:20
Words cannot describe that passage. Sa totally cocks up, Jota open goal but Coady and Kilman retreat - Jota smashes it at man mountain Coady - off the line and still 0-0.

Fabinho cyclically fouls Traore - would have been through

Cheshire wolf
04/12/2021 16:58
All over and that is a cruel result for us. Origi likes scoring against us but we deserved at least a point, although sadly we never really looked like scoring to be fair. These teams at the top keep going to the very end and we defended so well but couldn’t keep it up for 95 minutes!,
Wolves 0 Liverpool 1

Liverpool were relentless but we did defend well. Bummer. So close.
Sa was great, Max is still growing. Traore equally terrifying and erratic. Raul not quite there (or unsupported).
Sorry but time for Semedo to go; beaten too many times and his speed does not make up for other weaknesses.
Oh well!

Had to collect my daughter whos car had broken down so missed the last 15 minutes.

RAN played well against Salah so credit there. Great effort by the team throughout and losing like that brings no shame— onwards and upwards.

Ivybridge Wolf
04/12/2021 17:25
Just about able to type. Truly devastated and gutted by that cruel blow at the end.

Liverpool are a great side, that’s obvious but when done correctly, defending is an art form and today, in that respect we were immense, utterly outstanding. Sa set the scene with a great performance though ably supported by our collective central three who were quite superb, all of them. I’ll add RAN to that, with some excellent interventions - was his substitution / injury the difference in the end? Agree that Semedo is the weak link, too lightweight and positioning questionable but even he made some good tackles.

Our only outlet upfront today was Traore and Jimenez was just to isolated. It didn’t come off but every man in gold certainly put the effort in. Absolutely no complaints there.

If we had held for just one more minute that would have been the first clean sheet v Liverpool by any side this season.

Valiant, Wolves, valiant but ultimately nothing to show for it. I am exhausted.

Gutted to lose the game so late, it's a cruel game football. If the ball doesn't stick up front and keeps coming back at you a class side like Liverpool will score eventually. Don't think that goal would of come if ait Nouri is still on the pitch though thought he had a great game today. I know we were playing a very good team today but at The minute we don't look like scoring which is a worry. Thought the ref and linesmen were rubbish today or was it just me thinking that? Oh well unlucky wolves not to get a point now a nice easy one again next week at city. Just a quick note on the rumours saying we have to sell before we can buy in January. Come on fosun give lage a chance and back him I don't think we are a million miles away from having a good side with a few quality additions. Jeff said he wanted to push for champions league places a couple of years ago time for him to prove it!

Wasn't able to see the match as I was called in to work. I have seen a few minutes of highlights and listened to a couple of reports as well as, obviously, reading the views on this thread.
I'm not one who considers conceding late goals as unlucky. Of course it's a sickener but you've had just as long to score as the opponent. That being said, from what I can make out, it seems as though Sa, Kilman, Coady and Saiss defended well and that Ait-Nouri had an exceptionally good match.
Our lack of goal scoring continues to be a concern. As I said, I didn't see the match so on this occasion I could be wrong, but we just don't create enough scoring chances. I'm unconvinced by Traore, although I didn't see him play today, and I wonder if it may be time to leave out Hwang for a while. No criticism of him intended but he hit the ground running but has been quiet for the last three or four matches.

I have to disagree there EW I thought Chris Kavanagh had a very good game, doing his best to let the game flow and booking the Liverpool players who has to foul Traore to stop him. The only dubious decision I thought was their failure to give a free kick when Sane pushed Raul over.

24 hours on and I’m still gutted.

Nevertheless, in the cold light of day, whilst the defending was heroic right up to the 95th minute, if we can’t score a goal, it’ll be tough every match, irrespective of the quality of opposition. That’s 3 blanks in a row and next up the Citizens, Chelsea and Brighton, two more of the top three and a side who traditionally have caused us big problems over the last few years!

There is no doubt the Jeff and Fosun have to back Bruno over the next two transfer windows, in the way they didn’t in the summer and similarly failed in the latter period of Nuno’s reign. And I don’t mean expensive and unproven 18 year olds!!
