Match Thread: Wolves v Brentford 18/9/21 12.30KO

Remember, remember 1947

Did you know? The last topflight Wolves v Brentford match was played at Griffin Park 18th January 1947, in front of 34371. We lost 4-1. At Molineux earlier in the season we lost to The Bees 2-1. Just one point from either match and we’d have won the league. We finished 3rd; Brentford were relegated. Typical!! That was then …. Much has changed, more recently with Brentford moving half a mile up the M4 to their brand-new Brentford Community Stadium.

Today Molineux welcomes the current Brentford side fresh from promotion who have 5 points from their 4 matches to our 3 points, including their very good win versus Arsenal. They, however, will be looking to bounce back after a home defeat to Brighton last week, whilst we will be looking to build on a much needed first win of the season at Watford.

Our playing style and form has been pretty good, as well documented, and overall whilst last week perhaps wasn’t our best display over 90 minutes, the critical difference were the goals!! Yes, and about time, two of them …. Including one from a Wolves player. Congratulations to Hwang Hee-Chan on his debut goal – many more, we hope.

Will Bruno mix the team up today or go for the 4th league match unchanged? No changes again are very possible. The cutting edge up front is still required, though some of the combinations and passing have been very good, Neves back to great form and he should be key again today. Frankly the number of chances we have created in our first 4 matches has been ridiculous but surely if we keep going with the same style and play, openings and goals will follow. Surely? There’s bound to be a bit of a continued focus on Jimenez too. Can he break his duck? How is he reacting to life post head injury? Despite no goals, class is permanent …… what about his flick on to Semedo last week, it was magnificent, a move which exemplifies his overall importance to Wolves.

Brentford are no pushovers however with their 6 goals this season all coming from different players, no one trick pony! Indeed, they adopt a wing back approach too and will be tough to break down - tactically an interesting match up.

My feeling is that it will be a close encounter, nevertheless I am more than hopeful that the Molineux faithful will be treated to a first home win of the season today and perhaps erase some of the pain and disappointment of January 1947!! I jest, but a win would be brilliant.

Finally, a 12.30 KO. Always a strange time for a match in my view, but the weekend starts here. For those who are able, it’s live on BT. For those who perhaps aren’t, please feel free to post your match comments, observations and thoughts in this match thread.

As always, enjoy the match and UTW!

Hi all - just a bit of advanced notice, both Chesh and I will be both, very likely, unavailable for the Spurs League Cup match on Wednesday. If anybody would like or is able to contribute to a match thread, you'd be more than welcome!

In the meantime, fingers crossed for 3 points today, best wishes all

Not sure if we are good at early starts, but if we can't beat Brentford at home it's going to be a long season.

Have a feeling that this will be a “lively “ match, and expecting several yellows to be forthcoming.
Should have enough quality to take three points but Brentford won’t be a walkover so an early goal would be nice as it would give us momentum and the opposition could crumble under sustained pressure. Our defenders will need to be alert with Toney playing well at present.

Decent start to the match by Wolves, on the front foot generally. Yet it’s Brentford who get the ball in the net. But offside. Good match

Marcal taking good immense risks pulling on a Brentford player. VAR check. Penalty. Ridiculous defending

Erroneous use of the word good in last post.

Terrible, awful defending

Definite and stupid penalty to give away and then Sa booked for scuffing the pen spot. Marcal was
Doing the same thing at Watford last week so no surprise!

Here we go. Could be a second goal to Brentford

Offside or handball on VAR.

Handball - no goal. Thank goodness

Brentford denied another by handballing before converting.
Wolves look shaky at the front and the back!!

Half time after a dreadful first half from Wolves. Too easy for Brentford after some very poor defending by Marcal & Saiss in particular.
Traore unlucky to hit the bar but otherwise pretty toothless upfront. Disappointing after rushing to get to a pub in time for kick off.
Wolves 0 Brentford 2

Hardly seen a thing as stream keeps cutting out. Every few seconds, it's driving me nuts. From what I have seen, a definite penalty and Kilman at fault for the second which is a pity as he has had a good season so far.

So incredibly disappointing first half.
Their spell os superiority came from nothing and gift wrapped from awful defending. Culprit in chief, Marcal

Possession is all well and good but we need an end product and over 45 minutes we have yet to test their keeper. Moutinho seems absent from this game and our defending is schoolboy at times.
Podence on for Trincao for me, offers a greater attacking threat.
Disappointing to say the least and whilst I expected Brentford to give us a game I didn’t expect us to capitulate in quite the way we have in this first half. Need to do something special in the second half or we are giving away a good opportunity for points. Their defence is packed and reasonably organised so we are going to have our work cut out, cmon lads.

Hwang Hee Chan on for Saiss. 442?

Well well well.Brentford miss massive chance for 0-3

Monumentally stupid challenge / wrestling from Baptiste. 2nd yellow and Brentford down to 10 men. 65 minutes gone

The stream I had was awful and didn't really see enough of the match to be able to comment apart from stating the obvious, that it was a terrible result.
On the rare occasion I got a picture, that lasted for about five seconds, every time it came on a Brentford player was lying on the ground.

When you play for 90 minutes and don’t force a single save from the opposition goalkeeper you can only surmise that there is something wrong with our approach.
Pretty to watch but pointless if we have no end product so something must surely change.
The players have put a lot of energy into this new style of playing but they will need to see some reward or their heads will drop and results will be hard to come by, as if they aren’t already!!
No standout performances today, Neves was solid and tried to drive things forward, Traore was at his irritating best, lots of endeavour but again no end product and a lot of wasted crosses. Raul looks to be getting up to speed and a goal will do him the world of good, discarded his headband in frustration. Let’s hope that we don’t reflect upon this result as being a six pointer later in the season.
Until we find that elusive cutting edge we will continue to struggle no matter how much possession we have . As my teachers used to say “must do better “.

And Brentfords time wasting tactics were an embarrassment for the game of football, yellow cards would not go amiss.

Ivybridge Wolf
18/09/2021 14:59
Yep, the time wasting was irritating and at times pathetic.

The reality, as eluded, is that we have lost 4 matches out of 5. Today was likely the worst performance of the season so far. Started okay but their first goal (a gift from Marcal) seemed to stunt us completely. No nightmare performances but just a bit lacklustre. We have to remember we are at home, and no shots on target for their keeper to worry about is so disappointing to say the least. Three successive home defeats …. Not great is it. 2 goals in 5 matches speaks for itself, in terms of where the improvement is required …. Plus only one clean sheet that is.

Onward and forward. No doubt we’ll smash Southampton next week, and who knows, Nuno’s Spurs midweek, maybe wishful thinking …… we desperately need goals.

Worrying performance today, very poor all over the pitch. After last week's result I expected a lot better than that! Same old story just no cutting edge again. It's alright having all them forward players on but you have to have some sort of plan, I didn't see one it was just desperate stuff. All marcals experience and he thinks he can rugby tackle from a corner, what a joke. No shots on target even against 10 men is a big worry. Brentford fully deserved the points today, they looked well organised and had a plan, we looked disorganised and didn't have a plan. Not one player in a wolves shirt stood out for me and adama was so frustrating again today, how many balls did he put into the box today that went over everybody's head. Gutted with result today easily the worst we have played this season but we move on and let's hope for better next week.

Total and utter garbage .... not 1 shot on target and playing against 10 men for 25 minutes. This could have been 0-4. Relegation material, big style.

Lupy

Could have been 4-2 but we are in danger of becoming a team it is difficult to lose to.
