Match Thread: Leicester City v Wolves

Bosses and Strikers

By Wolves
August 14 2021

The Molineux Way welcomes all Wolves fans to its board on the first day of our fourth consecutive since rejoining the Premier League for the 2021-22 season. As in 2019 our first game is away at the King Power Stadium, Leicester, from where we have struggled to come away with 3 points.

New Manager Bruno Lage will lead his team into the opening game of his first season in the Premier League, full of hope that his new ideas and shape for the team will prove him to be a successful follower in Nuno's footsteps. Fans will be delighted to once again see Raul Jiminez leading the line for Wolves after the devastating season he suffered last term, and to see how he has responded to treatment and adapted to his new headgear. Fans will also doubtless be pleased to see that none of our prized assets - Neves and Traoré in particular - have been prized away from the club so far. Let's hope they both put in a performance today which will make them too expensive to consider!!

Leicester will be bouyed by their success in the FA Cup Final over Chelsea, last week's win over Man City in the Community Shield, and their 5th place finish in the League, which will no doubt make them a difficult team to encounter on home soil for the opening game of the season. They have somehow managed to prise Yannick Vestergaard from Southampton for a miserly £15m in time to replace the badly injured Wesley Forfana, but will still be without Jonny Evans.

Wolves fans will be keen to see who plays in defence today, with Willy Boly and Yerson Mosquera still injured, and whether Nelson Semedo has recovered from Covid 19 in time to reclaim his right wing-back position from Ki-Jana Hoever. Fans will also look forward to seeing some exciting front line play from on loan winger Francisco Trincao joining up with Raul Jiminez and Adama Traoré

The game with commence at 3pm and our referee will be Craig Pawson. The newly changed VAR approach to offside and handball will also be under scrutiny with Michael Oliver responsible for that role today.

This board will carry regular updates for the untelevised game, and board members are encouraged to join in and post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to otherwise follow the match.

Sad to see the graphic suggests we’re not in old gold today. Disappointing if true.

As for the team, similar set up to last season.

Fingers firmly crossed, wished I felt more positive today but nothing that a good performance and 3 points wouldn’t cure!!

Game is off at a frenetic pace. City having much of the possession so far. Wolves fans making themselves heard. First attacking break by Adama into the box nearly comes off

Cheshire wolf
14/08/2021 15:12
Vardy set free and gets a shot away by easy for Sa.

Great to hear our fans in such great voice!!! Is this a library, the latest chant!! Could easily be a Molineux with the noise!

Excellent break by City but an early flag against Vardy before he nets the ball. Good interception by CC needed to stop Vardy again for a corner easily cleared

Cheshire wolf
14/08/2021 15:20
Another positive break by Adama to feed Marcal but his cross is too close to KS

Cheshire wolf
14/08/2021 15:26
Trink not seeing a lot of the ball so far, and when he does he’s looking to pass rather than run with it, unlike Adama!! Neves puts one over the bar and the fans sing his name

Cheshire wolf
14/08/2021 15:33
Vardy tries a shot from outside the area but easy for Sa. 30 minutes gon and still no score - which has probably surprised many of us!!

Ivybridge Wolf
14/08/2021 15:35
This is the only goalless premier league match up to now, 33 gone.

We’re doing ….. okay, I think. Lion share of possession to Leicester and if honest, they do look the most likely to score ….. Vardy looks hungry.

Very similar style to last season thus far

1 on 1. Should be 1-0

Dreadful finishing

Super break up the middle by Adama who beats the 2 central defenders and shoots wide of the right post with only KS to beat. We should be 1-0 up!

Ayoze Perez falls in a tackle and hits Marcal’s knee with his face. Fortunately Marcal is OK! Schmeichel doesn’t seem to know that the ball must not be moving when he takes a goal kick.
Vardy converts beautifully from close in after good play by Pereira

If you don’t score, you get punished.

Vardy latches on to a cross near post, it’s 1-0 to Leicester.

Gutting after that bl00dy miss

Poor throw out by Sa and Thielemans sends in a great shot from distance which he has to save.
Half time whistle goes and Wolves have played well to contain a dangerous City for most of the half. Our defence have done quite well, and midfield have done their best to keep it moving forwards. Adama has seen a lot of the ball and really should have converted his chance like he did at Man City in a similar situation. Vardy took his chance superbly giving Sa no chance.
I would like to se Trincao get a bit more of the ball from Hoever and attack with the ball and Raul to be in the box ready!
Half time City 1 Wolves 0

Lupy
14/08/2021 15:58
On the first half showing the main difference is the level of possession, we don’t put more than four passes together without losing the ball, and the number of chances created for Vardy compared to the number of chances created for Raul.
Someone needs to put their foot on the ball every now and then, it seems to me that the fast high pressing causes us as many problems as it does Leicester, if not more.
Leicester generally in control during that half although things could have been different if Traore had taken his chance.
Marcal looking good after his injury, let’s hope he stays fit.
This was always going to be a tough game but I think we are making a lot of problems for ourselves.
Needs a good half time talk.

We much more positive this half so far. Trinc going closest with a shot deflected over. Better possession, pressing and a bit more purpose. C’mon !

Back in the game!! Good stop by Soyuncu to keep Trink out from close in. Corner comes to nothing. Good effort from Hoever moving pinto the box between 3 defenders and shooting just wide.

14/08/2021 16:17
Hoever flashes one over the bar. At least it was a shot

Hoever’ next effort at a cross sailed over the bar!! Pereira runs into Marcal and Marcal get a yellow card! Vestergaard makes his debut replacing Maddison

Cheshire wolf
14/08/2021 16:26
Great recovery from CC to deny Barnes after a poor tackle by him. Adama to Neves to Hoever and he puts a great cross over but Raul heads hopelessly wide. City break and a good interception needed by Kilman to stop Barnes for a corner. Donk on for Joao. Corner cleared

Cheshire wolf
14/08/2021 16:27
Adama brings a save out of KS but should have scored.

Another chance for Traore ….. muscled Vestergaard out of the way but Adama volleys straight at Schmiechal.

Good defending by Kilman against Vardy. Barnes off replaced by Iheanacho - who knows where the net is!!

Cheshire wolf
14/08/2021 16:35
Neat play & Trink gets a shot away from outside the area on target but no power behind it. Marcal overhits the cross from the left again. Hoever gets yellow card for a blatant push. Vardy beats the offside trap but fires wide.

Trink opts to pass rather than shoot in the box. Adama shoots but deflected wide, Saiss goes close from the corner for another. Swiss’s header easy for KS

Cheshire wolf
14/08/2021 16:44
Bruno furious at Adama for being caught offside rightly so. Marcal’ passing a really class me concern - he just lashed the ball forward to Adam and game him no chance with it.

All over and we lose again at the King Power by one goal. We deserved more after a good performance but Adama really needs to find his scoring boots. I thought Kilman and Hoever played very well, although I continue to dislike the concept of a left footed defender at right back.but we are short of options. I look forward to seeing Trincao get the confidence to take players on and feed Raul.
It took an excellent Vardy goal to beat us which I hope will give our lads some confidence. Marcal needs to practice his crossing and take a bit of power out of them!!
Leicester 1 Wolves 0

All over 1-0 to Leicester ……… more about us as an attacking unit in the last 15-20 minutes but all to nothing in the end.

We had our chances in that second half, Kilman x 2, Jimenez and others, even Coady getting it in the net but offside (it was too) but that miss in the first half by Traore clearly changed things dramatically against us in the end. Terrible effort.

Much to make me think we might be okay overall but no big celebrations here because at the end of it all, we’ve lost, zilch points to show and Spurs and Manchester Utd coming up!!

A much better second half, more positive and more careful in posession.
Kilman has been outstanding today and Trincao showing us what he can do, more involved in the second half. Whilst Leicester bossed the first half we more than matched them in the second and with a bit of fortune could have snatched a point.
Traore guilty of squandering our best chances but he did offer a constant threat, just that final product as usual, must do better!!
Can’t fault the effort and on another day———
I am glad to say goodbye to all the passing backwards and sideways we endured last season and feel positive we can improve and look forward to some good results.

Same old no show in first half, when will these wolves players realise the game is over 90 minutes not just the second half. Much better second half but again the same old story we don't put the ball in the net enough. I think we did enough in the second half to get a draw but if you can't take your chances you ain't going to win games. Bad miss by adama first half that changed the game, I'm sorry but you have to put them away just not good enough. Midfield still needs work for sure. Nice to see raul back today, it will take a few games I think for him to get up to speed. It's not all doom and gloom I was encouraged by our second half showing. If bruno is allowed to bring 3 or 4 decent players in we will do alright this season. Anyway wasn't to be today but on to nunos spuds next week. Oh and a word on the away support today they were fantastic never stopped singing they deserved a win.
