Match Thread: Everton vs Wolves

two attacking wing backs

By Wolves
May 19 2021

Wolves travel to Goodison Park to play Everton in their final away match of this season against, and in front of fans once again. This will be an interesting challenge for both teams after poor results for both at the weekend.

After losing at home to relegated Sheffield United on Sunday, Everton need three points from tonight's game if they are to have any chance of achieving European football for next season. They will also be keen to perform for their Manager Carlo Ancelotte, after he was named as a potential replacement for Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.

Wolves have little to play for other than to finish above 12th place - and possibly above local rivals Aston Villa - but squad members will surely be keen to erase the memory of the poor defeat to Spurs on Sunday, and the young players who have featured recently will be keen to underline their value to the squad.

Nuno is likely to have to rely on many of the same players from Sunday's game as his options continue to decline. Daniel Podence has joined the list of injured or unavailable players following an operation on his problem groin. Pedron Neto and Jonny remain sidelined, but Marcal is close to being fit to return. Raul Jiminez attended an appointment with his specialist on Tuesday, but the outcome is so far unknown. Willy Boly sat the Spurs game out and may be in line to return to the first team tonight. Theo Corbeanu made his debut late on in London, but will not be seen tonight after playng - and scoring twice - for the Under 23's on Monday.

Tonight's game kicks off at 18:00hrs and will be screened by Sky Sports. Our referee will be young Andy Madley with VAR duties met by Graham Scott

This board will carry updates on the progress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to watch it.

A stronger looking team in some areas starting this evening, with Neves, Kilman, Ait-Nouri and Willy Boly returning to the team. The unexpected change sees John Ruddy replace Rui Patricio. Line-up:

Great to see Ruddy in, I have a lot of respect for him and he deserves a go.

Boly, Kilman, Coady in a back 3/5 - that feels stronger to me

Good luck to the lads, the big question is, can we score a goal??

Seems to be a nicely balanced team selection with some youngsters getting yet another chance to impress, good on Nuno.
Wishing for a good performance with result to match.

Wolves to kick off

Superb run by Adama through the middle. Then as he sets off Sigurddson pulls him back. Joao to take free kick. Eventually goes in but cleared

Semedo up the righ5 wing gets a corner but it’s cleared

Decent start ….. great volley from MGW. Traore positive

Nasty foul on Adama again this time by Decoure. Free kick goes for a corner. Wolves doing most of the attacking, until JR collects well from Richarlison

Cheshire wolf
19/05/2021 18:26
Digne fouls Adama!! No yellow cards yet. Some grea5 play by Wolves until Adama gets another corner. Everton are struggling to get any possession

Cheshire wolf

Adama fouled again!! Sigurddson pulls NS back this time but still no card shown. Good attempt by Fabio but it deflects off Mina & goes just over the bar for a corner. Short corner ends up with Neves whose pas goes for another corner. Super attempt by Adama brings a good save for another corner. Gibs -White is sitting back for a long shot from corners.

How many corners do we need!!!!

At least some long corners are being put in tonight Ivy!!

Cheshire wolf

Corner to Everton bobbles around in the area before going for another corner, which JR collects well. Semedo & Adama linking up well down the right, & MGW is playing well centrally so far

Cheshire wolf
19/05/2021 18:48
No AT and half time whistle goes - a half in which Wolves have been dominant but failed to convert despite a load of corners. Ruddy is looking confident and comfortable in goal and everyone else is playing well. Everton fans are less than enthusiastic about their team’s performance so far!!
Everton 0 Wolves 0

Last 10 we faded, clearly the better side overall but nothing to show for it.

Traore looking good and impressed with MGW.

If that’s our bad half out of the way, maybe we can achieve 3 points tonight!

Assured performance so far players confidence seems to be on the rise.
Are Everton very ordinary or are we making them look ordinary?
Great to see more players getting forward to support attacks and ball retention has been much improved.
Good to watch and looking forward to the second half

Early corner to Everton which Richarlison gets on the end of and scores with a header & gives JR no chance. Nobody defending the post.

Everton within minutes show us what to do with a corner. 1-0 FFS.

Boly didn’t get near him

Everton get their 3rd corner since the restart. Ball breaks to Adama & he goes round 3 players but his shot is timid & easy for Pickford sadly

Cheshire wolf
19/05/2021 19:17
Everton much better so far whilst some of our passing is poorer. Ait Nouri is posing them a problem down the left wing with some very positive attacking play

Something needs to happen. My suggestion is get Moutinho off. Not his best match in old gold

Jose replaces MGW who has played quite well

Instead MGW gets the hook. Don’t understand that, thought he’s played well

Neves floors Sigurddson in a dangerous area but free kick is dealt with. Good save byvJR to stop Calvert- Lewiin’s shot

Cheshire wolf
19/05/2021 19:30
Seamus Coleman is playing extremely well for Everton. Another poor corner kick by Joao

Cheshire wolf
19/05/2021 19:36
Sigurddson goes mighty close with JR beaten but just wide. Good dribble by Adama into the area. His cross comes off Doucoure’s arm which VAR check but no handball. Semedo gets the first yellow card for fouling Richarlison. Donk replaces Boly & Vitinha replaces Joao

Ivybridge Wolf
19/05/2021 19:36
Surely handall for a Wolves penalty there? VAR says no, I’m surprised 😮

Another Sigurddson shot deflected past the goal for another Everton corner. Coleman goes off for Davies which surprises me as he was playing very well

Cheshire wolf
19/05/2021 19:46
Adama fouled by Digne again. Sigurddson off for Andre Gomes. Good possession by Wolves but Adama’s cross is too close to Pickford.

Heading towards another team doing the double over us this season! Unusually we have been less threatening in the second half than the first. Plenty of effort & energy shown but little threat upfront.
All finished and Everton celebrate scoring the only goal of the game in what was a poor performance from them, and it was a good header from a corner.
A much better showing from our team than at Spurs and I think a draw would have been a fair result
Everton 1 Wolves 0

A much better performance even though we walked away with nil point.
Have got to admire RAN close control and ball skills.
Roll on Man Utd, let’s put this season behind us and look forward to the next.

Well …. LPH, I agree, a better performance than last Sunday at least. Decent first half performance but much quieter in the second half, and sadly that was ultimately telling with another set piece where we conceded. Me and my mate were decrying the Sky stat about conceding from set pieces and corners ….. and then what happens, we concede!! Bl00dy typical.

I certainly didn’t think we deserved to lose, but that’s football and if you don’t create clear cut chances (we were pretty sterile in that second half) and score A goal, then we will always struggle.

I thought our best player was Adama Traore again with a pretty decent contribution from MGW. Ait Nouri was good too. Today we lacked a consistent tenacity and drive from midfield, particularly from the old boys i.e Moutinho and Neves.

What to do? It’s all about the closed season but with a bit more push and at home AND in front of 4,500 Wolves fans, perhaps we might stand a chance versus Manchester Utd?

One thing, I advise serious training on corners, we mullered ‘um on corner count but diddly squat to show in terms of outcome. Some of corners today (were had loads in the first 45), whether long or short, were truly awful.

We live in hope!

PS

What about our penalty shout? From the replays, I thought it should have been given.

Glad this awful season ends at the weekend with Man. Utd. at Molineux. I'm fed up with the radio & TV commentators saying the same thing at every game. "Wolves are not showing any penetration in attack. Wolves are having trouble scoring/ lack of quality" etc. etc. I wonder why that is? Possibly no Jimenez, no Neto., no Jonny, no fit Polence, no Jota has something to do with it ! Rant over.

Had to work late and missed the match.
Sounds a bit different to normal with a decent first half and not so good second and sounds as though Traore and Gibbs-White played well.
This lack of goals is a serious concern and must be addressed in the summer. Whether it's as simple as bringing Jimenez back, we'll have to wait and see but something needs to change.
I won't be sorry to see the end of this dog's dinner of a season.

We wouldn't of scored if we had played till midnight! I said to the Mrs while watching the game we will have all the play Everton will get one chance and score and hey presto looked what happened you could see it coming. Our play was decent first half till we get to the penalty area and we are clueless. I know the injuries have wrecked our season but we just don't get enough players in the box to score goals. I still believe nuno is the man to take us forward but he has got a big job in the next couple of months to sort this team out. We have problems all through the team, defence, midfield and up front, let's hope he can bring in some quality in to add to the injured players coming back. Honest opinion here I've loved jao moutinhos time at wolves he has been class for us but I think wolves need young fresher legs in midfield if we are to push on. To be honest the team has looked leggy most of the season especially neves they need a good break which they havent really had the last couple of seasons. I'm confident nuno will sort out the problems. Anyway one last game and this poor season will be over thank God and hopefully fans will Be back next season. Bring on Utd!
