2019-20 Season Winner

It's time once again for fans to choose their Player and Goal of the Season for 2020-21 Season

In view of all the injuries and other enforced absences for essential players this season it is perhaps not easy for fans to decide who their stand-out performer is over this unusual period. Equally, seven goals have been selected for fans to choose frpm for their favourite, which is also difficult as they all have excellent qualities.

So... let's see what Wolves fans on the Molineux Way think. Who should succeed Raul Jiminez as player of the Season, and whose goal should emulate Ruben Neves' Europa League blockbuster?

I'll go first!!

Player of The Season

For many I think the Player of the Year will be Pedro Neto, which has frequently been suggested by commentators during televised games as being our best player. Whilst I agree he has made a huge contribution including being joint top scorer so far, he is now injured and missing the final games of the season. In my view none of our defenders have played consistently well enough, not even Connor Coady who I think does a superb job in defence and is an excellent captain. Similarly in midfield Ruben Neves has been consistent in his play, but has completely lost his shooting boots and his touch with free kicks, which is a cause of frustration in the amount being wasted.

My vote has gone to Adama Traore for his consistency throughout the season, playing in most of our matches, and doing his best to create goal opportunities for a sub-standard attack - particularly in the absence of Jiminez - who, I'm convinced, would have taken much better advantage of Traore's service. He has also weighed in with some very important and very well taken goals, and remains the one player currently regularly playing for us who I believe strikes fear into other teams defences. 

Goal of the Season

A much more difficult choice for me as they are all top goals in their own right. I was tempted by Adama's smash into the top corner against Crystal Palace, and the goal he created with his wonderful run and cross for Leander Dendoncker to head in against West Ham. Also I acknowledge the wonderful individuality of Neto's goal at Southampton which made such a difference for us after losing to them a few days earlier.

However my choice possibly for sentimental reasons, but also because it was a team goal, played out from the back by Marcal, featuring a magical run and cross by Daniel Podence and then exquisite control and dispatch by Raul Jiminez at Sheffield United - our first goal of the season, leading to three points, which filled us all with hopes of many more from our No.9

Lots to consider over a very strange season however my choice for player of the season goes to Moutinho, not because he regularly scores spectacular goals or for his mesmeric dribbling skills but for his maturity, always a cool and professional presence in the middle of the park, who must be a very steadying influence on those (youngsters) around him. Never gives less than his best, can compete physically with those opposition players who are often ten or fifteen years his junior and outthinks them on many occasions. It’s been a pleasure to see him wearing the Oldgold.

My goal of the season is also Rauls against Sheffield, lovely to watch.

Not an original choice but my Player of the Season is Pedro Neto, consistently our best player.
As for Goal of the Season, well, not surprisingly all seven are fantastic goals and a case can be made for any of them. I also loved Raul's goal against Sheffield but I have just about gone for Neto's against Southampton, a great bit of skill.

I managed to get my votes cast just before the poll finished!

For me, the best goal was between the Blades goal by Jimenez, the Traore cross and Donk header, and the Neto solo effort at Saints. Difficult, not least because of that amazing Adama run but I plumped for the Neto goal. A superb piece of individual skill, totally out of the blue, as unexpected to me as it was for the Southampton defence! Brilliant.

Player of the season was difficult. For me it usually reflects excellent contribution combined with consistency but 2020/22 hasn’t delivered that in abundance. In the end, the player which I felt most closely matched that criteria was, again Pedro Neto.

Will be interesting to hear who gets the official accolades.

Not surprised about Neto, Moutinho’s goal was a guddun to be honest.

I would probably have said Ait-Nouri for young player. I wasn't all that impressed to begin with, certainly with his defending, but now I wouldn't be against signing him.
