Match Thread: Wolves vs Burnley FC

Nuno and Sean

By Wolves
April 25 2021

An interesting game lies ahead for us at Molineux this lunchtime. For the third consecutive match Wolves will face a team struglling at the bottom of the Premier League when they welcome Burnley. Having lost 2 - 1 at Turf Moor Wolves fans will be keen to avoid seeing their team have another double done over them (which Burnley haven't done since the 1956-7 season) but it's fair to say they have struggled against the lower placed teams - managing only 1 - 0 wins against Fulham and Sheffield United. Meanwhile Burnley have been playing well but have struggled to get results.

Burnley will clearly be looking to do all they can to climb above Brighton after they slipped up yesterday. On the other hand Wolves are pretty comfortably in mid-table, but Nuno always states that they do not look at the table and will surely not allow this to influence the attitude of his players.

Wolves will still be without Ruben Neves following his positive Covid-19 test, so Leander Dendoncker is likely to continue in midfield, in what will probably be an unchanged line-up. Burnley will be without Ashley Barnes and may still be without Nick Pope in goal.

Today's game will kick off at 12 midday and strangely will be screened on BBC 1 so should be freely available to all fans.

Our refereee will be Darren England, with Michael Oliver on VAR duty

This board will carry updates on the progress of the match for those unable to watch it, and board members are encouraged to post their own observations for their benefit.

As if to make a liar of me Ruben Neves is suddenly able to play, but Joao Moutinho isn't in the squad! Otherwise no changes. Line-up:

Expecting a tough match although I think we will prove to be too strong over ninety minutes.
Don’t forget it is being shown on BBC.
Would be nice to see a bit of Theo if the situation is favourable.
2 - 0 to Wolves.

The corresponding fixture last year was on the same day Stokes and Leach won the test for us, watched it until the end in the Clarendon and the first time in about 35 years I missed the start of a match at Molineux ! As memory serves, Jimenez scored an incredibly late penalty equaliser in an otherwise poor match.

Fear not, it’ll be a classic today!! UTW

That side seems to pick itself these days ...... COVID-19 willing. Would like to see Kilman involved TBH.

enjoy the match all 👍🐺

First shot comes from DP. But easily taken by Pope. Good bright start to the game from Wolves

Cheshire wolf

Westwood gets a shot away for B’ley but high & wide. Then DP breaks really well & tries to curl one in but deflected just wide for a corner. The wind seems to be interfering with crosses. Great recovery by Boly after a poor header but then Wood gets the ball beats CC & converts from a tight angle
Wolves 0 B’ley 1

Stupid pass back by Adama leads to a cross to Wood who very easily converts whilst Adama stands & complains. Dreadful goal to concede
Wolves 0 Burnley 2

Burnley making it look far too easy so far.

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 12:31
McNeil & Taylor are getting too many good crosses in down our right side. We are toothless and ineffective upfront so far

Dire watching.
Passing poor, creativity poor and team cohesion poor.
Burnley picking us off at will and we don’t seem to have the answer.
I find it difficult to see who on our team is going to come out of this match with much credit if it continues this way.

Desperate stop by Rui to prevent Vydra from scoring. Our defence is really struggling against the Burnley attack

Melee in the Burnley area leads to a yellow card for Tarkowski after DP. Lay on the floor after a push. Adama pushed his luck pushing Cork in the face & also got a yellow card.

Chris Wood completes his hatrick direct from a corner. Unbelievably easy

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 12:50
Poor shot from Willian Jose gets a corner as we head to half time. Semedo shoots but well well wide.
Half time whistle and it’s men against boys in this game. Wolves are a disorganised shambles and Burnley are an extremely effective attacking machine with Chris being presented with 3 very easy chances which he has taken.

Making up a three goal deficit will be miraculous so I think we can say a whimpering goodbye to any points today.
I really begin to worry about our chances for next season if something fundamental doesn’t change.

Embarressing to say the least .. We need to dig deep in the second half.

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:06
No changes as we restart. Considering our recent goal scoring record it’s difficult to imagine us scoring 3 let alone 4 in this half!

Cheshire wolf

Vydra scores Burnley’s 4th after a very poor pass out from Saiss. VAR checking for offside and overruled- but they will probably manage it soon!

I can’t remember Willy Boly having such a poor game before

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:16
Fabio Silva replaces Semedo & Traore changes to wing back

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:23
I fail to understand the concept of playing Saiss on the right & Boly on the left when Saiss is so left footed. He is struggling in defence today

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:28
Podence has had another poor game & is replaced by Vitinha. Neves replaced also by MGW

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:31
Vydra off, Jay Rodriguez on for B’ley

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:40
Second successive poor cross by Adama from the right. We remain toothless!! Wood gets a shot away but Rui is equal to it.

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:44
More dreadful defending by Saiss and Westwood scores from the edge of the area to complete the thrashing.
Wolves 0 Burnley 4

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:46
Saiss has ago from outside the area but too high.

Cheshire wolf
25/04/2021 13:47
Into last minute so it’s a matter of preventing a 5-0 defeat!!

Referee brings our suffering to an end. The worst performance of our season to match the loss at West Ham. None of our players played well, but I can’t remember seeing Boly and Saiss both have such poor games. Burnley were very well organised and never gave an inch.
Agree with Danny Murphy Wolves were absolutely useless!!
Wolves 0 Burnley 4

Anyone out there confident about our next match?

Embarrassing.
Not one single player was even average. We helped Burnley to at least three of the goals, if not all four. Defending was all over the place, midfield none existent and never looked like scoring.
Podence, who has been particularly disappointing since he came back from injury, should be ashamed for staying down and feigning injury leading to the handbags incident in the first half. I know lots of players from all sides do these things but pretending to be injured, cheating for want of a better word, really gets my goat.
On that performance, no-one is worthy of his place and I am dreading next week against West Brom.

Lost for words, players should give their wages to charity that was pathetic, no effort no fight we just rolled over for them!

Burnley played well - but then we let them. Lucky to keep it to 4 nil. I hope to God the BBC never show us live again - I have a lot to live down living up t'north. Thank God for social distancing! (never thought I'd ever say that!)

Where has the collective effort and tenacity gone?

What has happening to our sides ability to snap at heals like Jack Russels, in anticipation of winning the ball back and making something happen? Passive and unengaged. The swagger has long since gone.

This performance was dire but what saddens me it that it was devoid of anything that has made us so difficult to beat in the last few seasons. We might not always play well but there was / is always a collective effort that you could see and be proud of. Absolutely nothing to suggest a fight or spirit .... or anything. Absolutely rubbish and embarrassingly so.

Individual mistakes cost us badly for goals 1 and 2 in particular but our team displayed nothing to ever suggest they were up for a battle, especially when behind and show a bit of pride.

What was the idea in the second half?? I expected to see something but instead another 45 of toothless insipid sh!te.

Total and utter cr@p. Ffing useless, the lot of them.

A terrible day for all connected to Wolves.

Albion next, good god, they must be quaking in their Baggy boots.

One positive, thank goodness that was played behind closed doors, not sure the Molineux faithful would have tolerated that much beyond half time.

A real worry.

Absolutely right Ivy, a complete dereliction of duty, no one fighting for the badge.
What I think that I have noticed over the last few matches is that the smiles have gone, no pats on the back, subdued celebrations, Coady is not as vocal as he used to be, and they don’t seem to be working for each other the way they used to. Tackles are halfhearted and we are bullied off the ball far too often.
Perhaps I am reading too much into it but since Jose arrived we offer very little goal threat and it seemed that Traore today was almost over hitting his crosses on purpose.
Whatever the cause something or someone needs to identify the malaise and correct it asap before it becomes the norm.
