Match Thread: Manchester City vs Wolves

Mutual Respect

By Wolves
March 2 2021

Wolves face a mighty challenge this evening for the second of their three succesive away League games. A trip to the Etihad Stadium to face the League leaders who have completed fourteen consecutive Premiership victories and twenty wins in all competitions faces Nuno Espirito Santo and his tea. Tonight's game has been brought forward due to City's ongoing domestic and European match commitments.

Wolves fans will never forget the day last season when two Adama Traore goals sealed an astonishing 2 - 0  victory for Wolves at City, however City gained revenge at Molineux in Wolves' first home game of the season by winning 3 - 1. After an uncertain start to the season City are now firmly settled at the top of League as favourites to regain their title.

After a run of unbeaten games throughout February, taking eleven points from a possible fifteen, Nuno will be hoping his team will put in a convincing performance this evening, especially after being threatened many times by Newcastle in their last match. The bad news for Nuno is that City only have Nathan Ake injured, so as usual they can field a full strength team. Although unconfirmed by Nuno, it is expected that Daniel Podence and Willy Boly will still be absent from the Wolves line-up. Raul Jiminez will also be missing but Nuno has confirmed his strong belief that his player will return to the team before the end of the season.

Tonight's game kicks off at 8pm and will be screened by BT Sport2. Our referee will be Chris Kavanagh, with Craig Pawson on VAR duty

This board will carry regular updates of Wolves' efforts to repeat last year's heroics. Board members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to otherwise follow the match.

So.... after praising Willian Jose's performances this week, Nuno drops him to the bench!!
An interesting line-up with Ki-Jana Hoever coming in on the right side. It will be interesting to see if Donk still plays in the back three and Semedo moves forward with Traore playing more centrally .
Good to see Willy Boly back in the squad. Line-up:

The Wolves app and the above team have differing views of where Semedo, Hoever and Donk play!! We’ll see.

Likewise, one states Traore as the ‘lone’ central forward, the other as above.

8pm and all will be revealed.

Got to be much tighter in defence tonight to provide a platform for what would be an unlikely win for Wolves. We’ve done it before and it would be fantastic to end this Citizen’s run .

Hoping for the best, seriously concerned it might be something different! All the best lads, give us a performance 👍🐺

More of the usual pre match bullhonk from BT (just like Sky) ....... it’s all about Man City.

Wolves kick off after taking the knee. First opportunity goes to Sterling - well blocked by Rui.

It’s not going to take long before we are sick of hearing how good City and their run are!!

Cheshire wolf
02/03/2021 20:11
Adama gets on to the ball in the middle and is immediately surrounded by 3 City players and Silva takes the ball. Corner to City. Good calm play by NS. to clear a threat

Cheshire wolf
02/03/2021 20:15
All the attacking is coming fromCity so far as expected!

Cheshire wolf

Maurer found down right side crosses and it goes in off Donk with Sterling immediately behind him.

We are rooted. It’ll be a tough watch if this continues, continually nervy experience!!

Not getting a sniff in their half at the moment. Not getting a sniff of the ball either.

1-0, Donk own goal. Not sure he can be faulted.

Quite worried at what this scoreline could be

Good period of play by Wolves ends when CC makes a poor pass then the pressure mounts again until a poor pass by Walker. City as slick as ever and extremely quick at regaining the ball when they lose it. Adama hurt in a challenge by Laporte but hoped OK

City happy to play back to their keeper and keep the ball until the move forward is right. Robbie Savage isn’t an easy listen!

Cheshire wolf
02/03/2021 20:37
Nice ball out to Hoever from Joao but his cross is abysmal. Wolves win the ball but it only takes one failure to control to lose it again. Good period of possession on both wings by Wolves until Neto robbed.

What a pity that Wolves can't play like the Robbie Plonker commentator thinks he could. He seems to know exactly what Wolves should do.

Cheshire wolf
02/03/2021 20:47
Neto loses possession easily and another attack leads to a corner well collected by Rui. Good break by Adama until we go offside. Good block by NS sees DeBruyne’s shot go for a corner. After some play Laporte puts the ball into the net VAR looking at offside which is confirmed although it was his arm offside!! One added minute to play

Ivybridge Wolf
02/03/2021 20:49
Not a great deal to say about that half.

A bit of a football lesson by Manchester City.

Other than saying we are looking to come backwards a little bit when we do get possession , the best thing I can say is that it’s only 1-0. Miracles can happen.

How close was that offside, just like Bamford. I thought the goal would be given

Half-time whistle after Rui makes his second save of the night after Donk lost the ball carelessly. Not an easy watch as City are just so good in and out of possession & and we’re struggling for space to attack. We have done well to keep their lead to one goal!
City 1 Wolves 0

Men against boys in that first half, lucky to be going in just one goal to the deficit.
Ten out of ten for effort, would be hard to single out any one for any criticism.
We have done it before and are often better in the second half so all is not lost although they must be knackered!!
Traore back on the wing for me and Willian down the centre.
Let’s see, fingers crossed.

Agree ..... get Hoever off, Willian on. Neto and Traore back on the wings

Fine save by Rui to deny DeBruyne. Guardiola up & yelling at his tea m every time they make a mistake! Hoever makes another error to lose the ball. Fabio coming on before Jose!!!

Cheshire wolf
02/03/2021 21:14
Another good parry from Rui to deny Mahrez. Fabio replaces Jonny, & Hoever moves to left side of defence

City pass back to Edinson from half way line!! And again!!

Ivybridge Wolf
02/03/2021 21:26
Got to love Coady.

that’s football. At 1-0 you always have a chance. We’ve played better this half at least, changing the formation has helped. Rui just saved our bacon again.

Good hold up play by Fabio to set up Adama but his shot is blocked. Then another Adama shot earns a corner which Laporte nearly puts in his own net. Another attack and a shot from Neto then Adama over the bar. Much better from Wolves so far. DeBruyne shot well held by Rui

Ivybridge Wolf
02/03/2021 21:29
A 5 v 3 then and we couldn’t muster a shot to trouble Edison, although he has had to take off his slipper and throw away his pipe this half

Cheshire wolf
02/03/2021 21:36
Super ball in by Mahrez & Sterling’s back heel is just wide. City take all the time they need to attack but Donk clears for a corner which is cleared. And again by CC Good effort from Sterling hits outside of the post. A good game now

Well, the last 5-8 minutes it’s been all Man City and we’ve given the ball away cheaply in dangerous areas. Nevertheless a very disappointing goal to concede. Will be tough from here, 8 minutes to go.

C’mon Wolves!!

Cheshire wolf
02/03/2021 21:44
Superb play by Cancelo to stop Adama. Hoever has his hands full with KDB & Mahrez playing down his wing, but doing quite well.5 minutes to go

Cheshire wolf
02/03/2021 21:49
Neto earns a corner for Joao to take, cleared but Neto puts it in again but Donk’s header goes over. Owen Otasowie coming on to replace Ruben Neves. Otasowie tries to clever on the edge of the box & loses the ball, goes to Mahrez for him to slot it away
City 3 Wolves 1

Shame for the young lad Otasowie, first touch, caught badly in possession on the edge of the box, good Mahrez finish but a gift.

Shame.

3-1.

And that was the last action. A thoroughly well deserved win by a fantastic team to watch. We tried really hard in the second half and great to see Coady get his first PL. goal bu5 to no avail. Disappointing that we give away possession which leads to them scoring. I was irritated as I forecast a 3-1 win for City!!!

Lost my stream at 1-1 so will have to play catch-up later.
Can’t question the effort but City are on a different footballing planet at the moment.
Also had it down as 3-1 to City so a bit cheesed off.

Didn't deserve to have four put past us but then again I thought the goal City had disallowed in the first half should have stood. If that had happened to Wolves I would have been unchuffed.
Dendoncker was unfortunate for the first, don't think he could have done much else and overall I thought he did ok, especially second half.
Great header from Conor who I thought was our best player. Shame Rui didn't do better for the third as he had kept us in it until then.
Hoever struggled and a dreadful mistake by Otasawie at the end. I know they are young and inexperienced and Otasawie had only just come on but have to do better.

Overall the best side, which was easy to see, won. Manchester City are streets ahead this season.

The final score is maybe a bit harsh, though the first half, we did not have a sniff. Second half, much better from Wolves with a better shape, more intent, an equaliser and then two or three opportunities to actually take the lead. Then we retracted a bit more, gave the ball away unnecessarily at times, and the intensity switched back to Manchester City once again and you felt it was only a matter on time, which is what it turned out to be. Otasowie influenced the match by being at fault for their third (hope he doesn’t take it to heart) and the four was a damn shame. Overall, I felt 4-1 was harsh versus a team worthy of being champions of England .... for definite. The best side we’ve played.

Positives:
First, We had some good chances second half (yes, more composure required).
Second, Rui played excellently once again.
Third, a wonderful moment when Conor scored his first premier league goal. A fabulous moment which I celebrated with gusto.

Villa on Saturday. Let’s be positive, let’s take the match to them and burst their bubble!!

If you give the ball away like we did to a class team you are going to be punished and that's what happened. Best team won on the Night for sure but 3 of their goals were avoidable. Less said about first half the better we showed city way to much respect. We were a lot better in the 2nd half as usuall but after we made it 1-1 city just moved up a gear and we couldn't cope. For me adama just hangs on to the ball to long and won't pass and he cost us the 2nd goal and it proved a game changer. For me he does not work hard enough when he hasn't got the ball and just stands still. I will be surprised if he's still a wolves player next season. Any way on to the villa Saturday let's hope we cut out the errors.
