Match Thread: Wolves vs Southampton - FA Cup 5th Round

The 5th Round

By Wolves
February 11 2021

After scraping past Chorley in the 4th Round, Wolves have a chance this evening to add to the recent woes of Southampton by putting them out of this year's FA Cup Competition

In one of four all-Premier League 5th Round ties Wolves host Southampton for the first of two encounters this week, for the right to move into the quarter finals of the FA Cup for the second time in three years. Struggling with a high number of injuries, Southampton have been on a poor run of form lately, losing at Man Utd and Newcastle and conceding 12 goals in the process. Wolves have improved their fortunes by taking 4 points from Arsenal and Leicester last week in the League, whilst only conceding 2 goals in their last four games.

All Wolves fans will surely have been delighted to see Jonny Castro Otto return to first team duties for the first half of Sunday's game. His six month absence has been  as severe to the team as that of Raul Jiminez, and the fact that he has now signed a contract extension keeoing him at Molineux until 2025 will bring more joy to Wolves fans.  Rayan Ait-Nouri is reportedly back in training so he may pose a challenge to Jonny for a starting place tonight, but Marcal remains unavailable, as do Willy Boly and Daniel Podence. After his goal at Chorley, Vitinha may be in with a shout to appear in tonight's game, and it is reasonably expected that John Ruddy will once again keep goal.

Coach Nuno Espirito Santo knows how popular the FA Cup is with the fans, and can be expected to field a strong team and mount a real challenge to win the game.

Our referee tonight will be John Moss who last officiated one of our games away at Man United. Simon Hooper will be on VAR Duties.

This game will kick off at 17:30 hrs and will be screened by BT Sport 1

This board will aim to provide updates on the action, and board members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to watch it.

Hugely surprised by Nuno's team choices for this game as I thought he would see it as a really important game to win. Six changes including no starting place for Conor Coady or Willian Jose.
It will be interesting to see the opposition starting Xl. Line-up:

What a lineup, could never have guessed that in a million years. Nuno obviously has decided that our priorities lie elsewhere. Can expect Otasowie to get some game time in order to rest either Neves or Moutinho and RAN on for Jonny at some point. A team full of youngsters maybe a quick preview of the team for next season.
Oh well, let’s see what happens. Cmon lads.

Disappointed to see that line up, in particular up front. MGW and Vitinha on the wings? Silva up front? Pleased, at least to see Jonny in the side and Hoever has looked decent.

Back 3 look okay but I would have picked Coady over Saiss.

Whatever my reservations, good luck to them ...... for me it is the competition to go for ..... probably like most Wolves fans - i.e. wins breed confidence.

They’ll probably go on and win 4-0!!!!!???

No-one would have predicted that line-up. Struggling to see where goals will come from. Prove me wrong, lads.

Nice to see Ruben Neves leading our boys out & to see Romain Saiss back in the team

Fair start for both teams & Saints get first corner. Well cleared under pressure by Ruddy, but another corner won - great chance for Bertrand but makes an airshot

Ivybridge Wolf

Ominous start. All the pressure from Southampton. 4 very dangerous corners already

Superb block from Saiss from Ings

Saiss blocks a shot from Ings extremely well. Redmondisas fast & elusive as ever in control of the ball. KJH (Hoever) puts a good cross in for Silva but he’s well blocked

Ivybridge Wolf

Couple of great Neves-esque passes and a decent cross from Hoever. Better from us

MGW stopped in the already by Salish - VAR. review but no penalty

Saints are dishing it out a bit to our youngsters Fabio & Vitinha in particular. We are missing our threat up the wings in this game

Cheshire wolf
11/02/2021 18:11
Excellent cross by Bertrand for Redmond in our 6 yd box but he can’t control it & collected by JR

Cheshire wolf
11/02/2021 18:15
Good break up right wing by KJH but his cross is poor. Another chance but he’s fouled. Joao puts free kick in but Saiss - in an offside position smashes it wildly!

Cheshire wolf
11/02/2021 18:21
Into 3 added minutes - good period of attacking for Saints. Half time whistle goes and it’s certainly not been an exciting cup tie so far & been pretty even between both teams, although Saints have looked more like scoring. We have very little actual threat going forward and Fabio is again struggling to hold the ball up when he gets it. Neves is in control as captain in midfield & defence is doing OK.
Wolves 0 Southampton 0

Another 45 of non-classic football

No evidence of any outlet up front. Forster enjoying is 3rd cigar in the Saints goal by the end of the half. Silva, sad to report, unable to hold anything up and again looks lightweight in comparison to his centre half opponents. Service to him has been lightweight itself however.

No shots on goal - can’t count the Saiss effort, it was offside.

Importantly it’s 0-0 and being a cup match we are very much in this with better class on the bench. When will Nuno stick to twist. Get Neto on ASAP would be my advice.

Southampton looked good early on but far more subdued themselves as the half wore on.

No surprise we haven’t had a shot on target, supply is non existent!
Same shape, same routines, same result so far I’m afraid.
Defence having to work hard to keep Saints at bay and if it continues this way in the second half we could say goodbye to a cup run. But we have a good bench so expect some changes.
Still all to play for.

Probably a pre-planned move with RAN (with his new improved hair-do) replacing Jonny

KJH pounces & crosses for Fabio but as always he skies it!!

Great save by Ruddy to deny the always dangerous Redmond for a corner. Armstrong takes a long shot for another corner. Neto comes on for Vitinha

Cheshire wolf

20 minutes to play and our subs are not seeing the ball yet!

Cheshire wolf
11/02/2021 19:06
Adama only has to touch Saints players & they fall over for a foul from the ref.
I have been impressed by KJH tonight

Cheshire wolf
11/02/2021 19:10
Forster does well to keep an Adama shot out after a great cross by Neto. It was our first shot of the game!!

Cheshire wolf
11/02/2021 19:14
Ings replaced by Adams. Good attacking play by Wolves but it breaks down outside the area again. Bertrand needs treatment after Adama trod on his finger.

Cheshire wolf
11/02/2021 19:18
Into the last five minutes andSaints are now playing for time. Great run busy Neto ended by a crude tackle by Romeu. Nerve steps up and hits it into the wall - very poor free kick!

Donk makes a ridiculous pass back to JR and it eventually breaks to Armstrong who puts it into an empty net

Ruddy error 0-2. Not a great Donk back pass to be honest.

We have been punished for an appalling attacking display.

Second best. Sad.

Wolves nil has a familiar ring to it

Penalty given to Saints but it will be given as a free kick - outside the box.

Indeed, free kick. Totally meaningless TBH.

11/02/2021 19:30
Jon Moss gives a penalty against Joao which looked outside the area & VAR is looking at. Free kick instead for Ward-Prowse to take but instead they waste time until the final whistle goes.
A poor game & a poor Wolves performance to see the end of our FA Cup run for another year.
Poor team selection by Nuno but he gave some players a chance to prove themselves which they failed to do. A scruffy goal by Ings settled it before a well taken goal by Armstrong finished it off.
Nuno made the substitutions but they didn’t make enough difference, and there was no effective service to Jose.
If MGW is still a Wolves player next season I will be very very surprised!!

Poor poor poor.
Second best in every regard. Devoid of ideas and seemingly brainwashed into playing the same routines over and over again to little or no effect. We have skilful intelligent players who seem to have had the joy of playing squeezed out of them.
Something needs to change.

Better to get 3 points on Sunday. Adama looked as if he couldn't be bothered to get out of bed this morning.

Awful performance, no cutting edge. Poor all over the pitch. Nuno got the starting line up totally wrong. Gone out of the cup with a whimper! To say I'm disappointed is understatement. Season over then.

Andy Fincher

Hugely disappointing but predictable. Was anyone surprised with that starting line-up?
Jammy first goal but once they had scored we were out. Difficult for the front lads because we hardly got the ball up to them in the first half but that being said Fabio in particular can't make it stick. Skied another reasonable chance over the bar and just isn't strong enough right now. I have no idea whether Jose will be good enough but he has more about him than Fabio and now he is here I can't see the point in continuing with Fabio this season. Have another look at him next season maybe.
For all Traore did when he came on we may as well have stuck with MGW.
I know all teams have players that are guilty of this particular trait but I am disappointed with some of our lads rolling around, beating the floor. Joao, Vitinha, Fabio were all caught with some sort of contact but never enough to cause any injury. If they had been playing with me on a Sunday morning back in the '80s they wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes. Fairies, the lot of them.

A depressing submission - that’s my take on it tonight. A performance devoid of any real attacking intent.

Everything was wrong.

And to add complete insult to injury, we would have played Bournemouth in the quarter final. Mind you, we’d probably have lost it.

I have no doubt that the mantra of “we must work harder, we must improve “ will be heard again.
But isn’t this what we have heard so many times this season and nothing seems to change. I could forgive us losing if it seemed that we were giving it everything to win but we seem to be almost afraid of settling foot in the opposition half, relying on occasional forays down the flanks which invariably amount to nothing. Teams know that we will sit back and defend so see it as an invitation to attack us immediately from kickoff which means we are at an immediate disadvantage and playing with fire, hoping that we can keep a clean sheet for 90 minutes!! If our counter attack was world class we may have some hope, but it isn’t. Whilst we have suffered some injuries to key players to suggest this is the reason for our poor showing is delusional, they still have to adhere to the same pattern of play.
We will hopefully survive this season and when we do preparations should start to adopt a different, approach for next season or I fear that we will degenerate into a team destined for relegation.
