Here Again!!

Wolves will look to take the opportunity to avenge their defeat by Chorley in 1986 whilst they were in the old 4th Division, travelling to the Victoria Stadium for this years FA Cup 4th Round tie. 

Having made it past the second (or third) team of Derby County in the last round, Chorley are the last non-league team to survive in this year's competition, and they will be looking to achieve a giant-killing act by defeating Wolves tonight. 

After their very disappointing showing in the home defeat by West Brom on Saturday, Nuno Espirito Santo and his team will be looking for a good performance and a win this evening in order to prepare for the difficult trip to Chelsea next Tuesday. Nuno and his players are stating that they do not underestimate the difficulty of tonight's challenge and are expected to field a strong team, although Marcal and Daniel Podence are known to be absentees alongside Jonny and Raul Jiminez. 

Tonight clearly presents an opportunity for Nuno to show some faith in Patrick Cutrone by starting him in a game - perhaps alongside Fabio Silva, or maybe show that he doesn't actually trust him!  The same applies to Morgan Gibbs-White who needs to prove he has the level of skill needed to remain part of our squad.

A pitch inspection by referee Anthony Taylor will decide whether the match proceeds after the heavy weather which has been seen in that area.

The game will kick off at 19:45 and will be screened by BT Sport. This board will carry regular updates on the prgress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to watch it.

Blimey this match is even getting a slot on the National BBC 6pm news, such is the hope for a bit of giant killing. Painful re-runs of 1986 footage, which to be fair has been doing the rounds all week.

Nervous? Definitely.

PS I wasn’t there in 1986 😁. Followed it on the radio and Ceefax instead

Yep nervous is the word.
Bit of a cloggy pitch so let’s hope we don’t pick up any more injuries.
Class should win out so hopefully Neto, Traore et.al bring their game tonight.

Obviously on paper we should win comfortably and equally obviously I think we will.

Interesting side which should more than do it but wonder whether many of them have ever witnessed anything like this before?

Saiss, I assume, is to rest up for Chelsea but glad to see Kilman back in and have quite a bit of faith in Hoever too. Not sure about Vitinha. Two centre forward, like that. Will they gel?

All credit to Chorley who are giving it a good go. They have had three shots & a header so far - 3 on target! As always Wolves building up slowly from the back. Vitinha is a live wire in the middle & Fabio is constantly making himself available but seeing little of the ball so far

Good break through the middle by Hoever until he is chopped down for which Tomlinson gets a yellow card. Free kick wasted between Joao & Hoever. We are struggling to bring our strikers into the game. RAN & Fabio both brought down. We can’t get a decent cross in from Hoever or Donk from the right wing & RAN isn’t seeing the ball at all down the left

We are winning, that’s the most important thing in the cup ........ but!

Attacking play has been weak in terms of passing, ball retention, crossing by attacking midfield and wing play ...... Silva and Cutrone feeding off scraps.

Have gifted the ball to Chorley on so many occasions and some really poor crossing. Giving the ball away for fun at times. We are a little too deliberate and slow in the final ball.

Great goal however.

Hats off to Chorley, played very well. They’ve created some good chances and with a touch more composure could’ve easily scored.

Workman like performance so far but what is alarming is the fact that despite us playing with an attacking formation there has not been one clear chance created for our two strikers!!! No forward in the world is going to be able to score many when they are feeding off scraps.
Great goal from Vitinha but we really haven’t tested their goalkeeper as much as we should have.
Only takes one mistake or some good fortune for Chorley and this game could become a bit of a scrap. Happy with the scoreline but we should have finished it off by now. Chorley will probably tire as the match progresses so perhaps we can take advantage then.

Hoever is the only Wolves player talking the ball in to the Chorley area. Cutrone unable to make a chance. Chorley always looking dangerous when they attack. We are being heavily criticised in commentary. Corner earned by Donk- wasted by Joao going short again. Vitinha puts another pass awry.

Neves increases the tempo noticeably & at last RANNis starting to see the ball up the left wing. Into the final 15 minutes. This is a typical FA Cup game wher the underdogs step up & play out of their skins & make the ’top team’ look very ordinary!!

Fabio gets into a shooting position but his shot is blocked. Chorley top scorer Hall is subbed. The ball bobbles on the pitch just as Neto’s about to shoot so he skies it! Yellow card for Cardwell for use of the arm. In final minute with an added 3 expected.

All over and Wolves win 1-0 after a difficult game. Not a classic by any means as we had no teeth at all up front. Willy Boly MotM. On now to play the winners of S’hampton v Arsenal.

Not many to come out of that with any credit ......... except ever man in a Chorley shirt.

We failed as an attacking force tonight (again) in particular in that second half. At times we were terrible ...... and all over the park. 1 shot on target!! I’ll say again however, it was a great goal.

What matters is the fact that we go through to play either Soton or Arsenal but blimey, what a scare

I thought we looked comfortable at half-time, leading without having to really get going. Great shot for the goal but I would have been disappointed if Ruddy had been beaten from there.
Second half a different kettle of fish. The first 5-10 mins were quite hairy. Chorley looked more like getting an equalizer than we looked like getting a second. I don't know if anyone was hoping to see Silva and Cutrone gel at all but that never came close to happening. I'm not sure which one was the least effective. Ruddy did what he had to do well.
We're through which is the most important thing but on that showing if Southampton and Arsenal needed an incentive for their match they've got one.

Delighted to be through to the next round but we won’t progress much further if we continue to play like we did tonight.
Very poor performance all round with only Hoever and Kilman worthy of their wages. We may as well play without strikers as they inevitably have to move into the midfield areas to get a touch of the ball. Not sure what the figures would be but I would bet my house on there being more backwards passes than forward.
Very uninspiring performance, bereft of ideas and the more I watch the more I think that, with a couple of exceptions all the players are drilled to perform in that manner relying on the likes of Neto, Traore and Podence to produce some magic. Silva must wonder where his goals are going to come from and Cutrone is probably looking forward to his next loan move. If we sign an additional striker I hope they will be able to live on past memories because they won’t be scoring many for us unless something changes.
Well done Chorley, great application and my apologies to the groundsman, the pitch held up well, just a shame we couldn’t play on it.
