Match Thread V Stoke City (F.A.Cup Third Round, A, 07/01/17)

By Badge32
January 7 2017

Well today we get a break from league action as Wolves travel to the potteries to face Premier League side Stoke City in the third round of the F.A.Cup. Wolves have a good record against Stoke in the F.A.Cup losing just once. However things are not going well for Wolves and we have not had a good cup run in a very long time so the odds really are not with us.

MATCH FACTS

Stoke have lost seven of their eight FA Cup matches against Wolves (W1, D1).

Wolves have lost their past six FA Cup ties against Premier League opposition - most recently losing 1-0 to West Ham in round three last season - scoring just one goal in those six games.

Since they earned promotion to the Premier League in 2008, Stoke have only failed to progress to round four of the FA Cup once, losing 2-0 to Hartlepool in January 2009; they have won their past seven third-round ties.

Wolves have won two of their past 18 visits to Stoke in all competitions (D6, L10).

Jonathan Walters has scored in his past two games for Stoke in the FA Cup, including the winner against Doncaster (2-1) in the most recent of those.

Wolves have not lost an F.A.Cup game away to Stoke City (W1, D1)

Head To Head

Games Played: 149 (8)
Games won: 64 (6)
Games drawn: 35 (1)
Games lost: 50 (1)

F.A. Cup matches in brackets.

'twould be nice to have a decent Cup run for a change, even though it's not very likely. Our main prerogative this season would seem to be having a good run in the Championship and finishing as high up as possible. Then next season........

Quite.
There's not much hope for us reaching the play-offs, and this is a derby match. More effort should be made.

Oh how I admire the mighty Stourbridge Town for all their desire.

Our recent cup runs go as far as crossing the line to get on the pitch!

We always have the Catchatade cup or whatever!

Seriously, I too would love a cup run. It would make a change - 19 years since out last semi final appearance. That's a disgrace to be honest. Sadly can't see it happening today.

Nevertheless UTW!

The fact the FA cup isnt taken particularly seriously

Ivybridge Wolf
07/01/2017 19:55
I dunno, Stoke put a decent side out, we played well, we took 5,000 and the Stokies were passionate enough to boo their side off.

Let's celebrate a decent win - we can only beat who's in front of us (a prem side!) and many, including me, didn't give us much of a chance today. The league looks dodgey for us and I'm not suggesting this is a guaranteed platform but it's good and if we can get a handy, preferably home, draw, then I'll think we'll find quite a few still have a large desire for FA cup success!

No, I think we got lucky making several changes resting players.. not saying we didn't deserve to win as we did but I don't believe a one off win was a managerial master stroke. Stoke had a strong side out on paper but it doesnt mean they were particularly motivated as they played without a heart beat for most of the match. I think if that was a premier league game we would have lost three or four nil.

Trurotommo

Haven't seen the team for many years, I appreciate your response, I now follow more rugby as it is more local and more honest. My team (Cornish Pirates) play in the second tier and I can watch a very good standard of sport. In the late seventies and eighties I rarely missed a game at the Mol but to be honest, I think that Sky have ruined the English game. I had a call from the Sky sales team the other day and the lady couldn't understand my comment that Sky had ruined football for the average Brit, and they have! Our national standards are now shite but the players (mainly foreign) are paid super abundant wages. Normal economics is out of the window, greed has assumed priority and clearly the need to remain in the premiership (apart from Wolves attempts) assumes international importance. Greed is clearly good.

Your own personal interpretation of events is a pleasure to read.

Please carry on bringing enlightenment and humour to those of us a long way from the West Midlands.

Regarding tv particularly sky, it'd make a pleasant change if they showed a few more non league clubs in the cup instead of the usual suspects of United, Liverpool, city every year. A typical example of this snoozefest was today with United at home to Reading with United 2 up in ten minutes being shown contrary to a game like Ipswich vs Lincoln finishing 2-2 or even Stourbridge but no we have to hear about Rooney breaking Charltons record against Reading. Apparently Uniteds last 16 games have all been on tv in the cup despite the fact they chose not to compete in it at all in 1999 destroying the reputation of the competition irreversibly IMO.

Ivybridge Wolf
07/01/2017 22:43
They must have heard you Angry - Lincoln first on MOTD tonight, followed by Stourbridge. Stourbridge were so unlucky this afternoon. Nice to hear a good local accent when Stourbridge connections were interviewed.

I went to see them play a couple of seasons ago in the FA cup when they drew at Plymouth - they were terrific - then went on the win the replay!

Hi Pete
I missed the beginning of the match due to more problems with Wolves Player, and didn't get on to it until after Costa's goal, but it was a really good match to listen to, with a lot of end to end action. I think the thing that won it for us was probably passion. I think the fact that Lambert made so many changes gave the likes of Williamson and Evans a real boost to be picked for a match against PL opposition as their first match back from injury. Saville seemingly stepped up to the plate as did Hause in defence, and as we all now know Ikeme had the sort of game goallies dream of.

Edwards always plays with passion as he did when he came on, and I jusat wish Dicko could get a goal to settle him back into the side instead of snatching at opportunities.
Personally I was amazed to see Doherty score with a free kick, as I knew he had a good shot in him,, but not from a dead ball.

All in all I think it was a great performance which we should all be pleased with, for the players and for Lambert.

Badge32
09/01/2017 01:14
Seen the highlights, Saville was lucky with the penalty call. I thought we played well and limited them to long range efforts which Ikemi saved well. The free kick was perfect and wrapped up a great result. Onwards and upwards.
