Team Summary:
The opening Friday practice at the Circuit of the Americas would see both
Mercedes cars out first running on the medium tyre. they would be followed
by a rush of drivers all coming out for their installation laps. But drivers
would start to set lap times quickly with Bottas setting a 1m:39.846
followed by Magnussen and Vettel. Verstappen was fastest with a 1m:38.423
then Magnussen also improved to be quickest with a 1m:38.350. He would
improve with a 1m:38.177 but Grosjean would go quicker with a 1m:37.759. he
would improve with a 1m:37.356. Albon on the medium would go quickest with a
1m:37.203 followed by Grosjean and Stroll.
The cars would be seen bouncing heavily on the bumps as they run up the hill
to the first corner. Quite a few drivers were running with the 2020 tyre
which was been trialled by Pirelli. Kvyat would move into third. Verstappen
was now second behind his team-mate but was on the 2020 tyre. Stroll and
Vettel would move into second and third. But Albon would move to the top of
the times with a 1m:35.451, followed by Verstappen, Vettel, Stroll, Perez,
Grosjean, Gasly, Kvyat, Ricciardo and Hulkenberg tenth. With the opening
forty minutes of the session completed the track would empty as drivers
pitted to return their extra set of tyres.
For Williams they were again slowest as they continued to evaluate the new
parts that they had used in Mexico. Albon would improve with a 1m:35.282 as
drivers started to return. Vettel now using the soft tyre would set a
1m:34.226 to be quickest. Leclerc was now in third behind Albon. Stroll was
now fifth using the medium tyre. More drivers were using the soft tyre as
Verstappen would now be quickest with a 1m:34.057 now followed by Leclerc,
Vettel, Gasly, Ricciardo, and Albon now sixth. Vettel on the 2020 tyres was
now second followed by Albon and Gasly, both on the soft tyre. For Williams
only Kubica had been able to set a representative time as Latifi was stuck
in his pit with a gearbox issue.
With the end of the session Verstappen would remain quickest from Vettel,
Albon, Gasly, Ricciardo, Grosjean, Leclerc, Hamilton, Stroll, and Magnussen
tenth. For Williams they would only see one car produce any lap times and
would finish the session slowest. The gearbox issue should be fixed by the
second Friday session when George Russell returns.
Robert Kubica:
Robert would be first out for Williams running on the 2020 prototype tyre
for Pirelli. He would pit and switch to the medium tyre. Robert would pit
after a single lap. With just under an hour and ten remaining Robert would
return this time on the soft tyre. Robert would set a 1m:42.537 to be 6.7s
off the quickest time. He would improve with a 1m:40.345. He would continue
to lap and would set a 1m:39.749 and then a 1m:39.004. With thirty eight
minutes remaining Robert would return again on the soft tyre. He would
improve with a 1m:38.424 to be 18th. Further improvements with a 1m:37.948
but he had dropped to 19th. He would pit after a seven lap run. Robert would
return this time on the 2020 tyre. His lap times were in the high 1m:38s as
he continued to lap pitting with the end of the session.
Nicholas Latifi:
Nicholas would take to the track running on the hard tyre with various aero
rakes mounted behind the front wheels as the team continued to complete
evaluations of the various updates that they have been testing.. He would pit
after a single lap. Just over an hour remaining and Nicholas would return
running on the soft tyre. He would seta 1m:41.112 to be behind his
team-mate. But he would have an issue with his gearbox seeing him having to
slow and run back to his pit using only second gear. He would get out of his
car as the team worked to sort out the issue. But it would be announced that
the issue was such that it would require an gearbox change so Nicholas was
out for the rest of the session. He would only complete seven laps in total. |
