Team Summary:
The start of the opening eighteen minute period of qualifying in Canada would be a slow start. But it would be the Williams drivers who would be out first but they would start a rush of drivers coming out. Stroll would go quickest with a 1m:13.219 but was beaten by Raikkonen and then Magnussen. But it was changing quickly as Norris went quickest with a 1m:12.407 followed by Magnussen and Albon. Leclerc would go quickest with a 1m:11.786 followed by Vettel. But Verstappen was now second followed by Hamilton and Bottas. Leclerc had improved with a 1m:11.481 again followed by Vettel and Verstappen, Hamilton and Bottas. The Williams drivers were again slowest with the quickest Williams driver 1.1 seconds off the next fastest car on the soft tyre.

Bottas was able to go quickest with a 1m:11.229 but again Leclerc would move ahead with a 1m:11.200 with Vettel now second. Verstappen was now fifth followed by Gasly. Both Williams drivers were back out on new soft tyres. Vettel was able to go fastest with a 1m:11.200 moving ahead of Leclerc, Bottas and Hamilton. Verstappen was now fifth followed by Hulkenberg, Sainz, Norris, Ricciardo, and Kvyat tenth. Again both Williams drivers would not make the cut and were out after the opening period.

The second period would see most of the top runners changing to the medium tyre so that they could start Sundays race on this tyre. The period would end with Hamilton fastest from Bottas, Vettel, Gasly, Leclerc, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Norris and Magnussen. The period would be red flagged as Magnussen crashed at the wall of champions spearing across the track doing major damage to his Haas. He was in the final period but would not be able to run. of the top ten Hamilton, Bottas, Vettel and Leclerc had run on the medium tyre.

The final period of qualifying would see Magnussen not run due to the damage to his car even though he had made it through to the final period. After their runs it would be Vettel who would secure pole from Hamilton, Leclerc, Ricciardo, Gasly, Bottas, Hulkenberg, Norris and Sainz. Magnussen was in tenth without having set a time. For the Williams Team it was again a session that would see both drivers try to maximise the performance of their cars given the limitations that they are currently faced with.

Robert Kubica:
Robert would be the first driver out on the track running on soft tyres. His first time was a 1m:16.564 to briefly go quickest. He would improve with a 1m:14.956 to move ahead of George if only briefly. Robert would pit after a four lap run. Robert would return on a new soft tyre. A 1m:14.393 from Robert but he would remain slowest. In post qualifying interviews in regard to whether the upgrades made the car any better Robert said: "It is difficult to judge"

George Russell:
George would follow his team-mate out also on the soft tyre. George would set a 1m:15.013 to move ahead of Robert. George would find even more time with a 1m:13.989 pitting after a four lap run. George would come out for his second run again on the soft tyre. A 1m:13.617 from George remaining ahead of Robert. In post qualifying interviews George would say "I was pleased with the session ... the car is feeling much better with our small test items that we brought ... I think we have improved the drivability now we just have to bring some downforce and performance."
