Those of us lucky enough to have been at Sandy Park last March had one hell of a day out, witnessing Bath winning their first domestic trophy for 29 years. The wins at Cardiff and Twickenham that followed in quick succession may have been more prestigious, but you never forget the first time. Make no mistake winning the Prem Cup matters.
There is also the fact this is a derby match, and winning away at Castle Grim always matters, whatever the occasion. Those of us who were unlucky enough to be there for the 64-0 game in 2022 will tell you that.
But wonderful as it would be to keep our winning streak against Gloucester – and brilliant as it would be to retain the trophy next spring, the reality is the real prize is giving our up and coming younger plays critical time on the pitch.
The recent first team performances of Ewan Richards and Ethan Staddon are just two examples of how last year’s squad benefitted from the experience and responsibility they were given during that winning run.
To give a reminder of the Prem Cup format this year, there are two pools of five teams that play each other in a home-and-away round robin format. After ten rounds and eight games each, the top two in each pool will graduate to the knockout semi-finals. Herein lie several flaws.
Round 1 took place in mid-September during the middle of pre-season. Round 10 will take place at the very end of February, when several teams will have crashed out of Europe and may be struggling to keep in touch with the top four in the league.
The motivations and priorities of clubs will change over time. We may well see some clubs field much stronger Cup teams in the New Year as the desire to salvage a season grows.
That is not a criticism of the teams either – after all, we named significantly stronger benches at the pointy end of last year’s cup as the silverware came within touching distance. The fault lies with the organisers of what is billed as a development competition but then fails to mandate that younger players must be picked.
The romantics amongst us may want a return to a proper A-League for academy players alongside a real blood-and-thunder knockout cup for first teamers. It is not going to happen anytime soon and we’ve got what we’ve got.
So back to Friday night at Kingsholm.
Bath have so far won one and lost one in this year’s Cup and lie fourth in the pool. Gloucester, with two wins form three, sit at the top. As the old cliché has it, there is still everything to play for.
Our most recent game was a very impressive win at Ashton Gate with a young pack showing they can play the same power game as the 1st XV. Gloucester sent an inexperienced side up the M6 and came away with a very good win at Sale. Reading through that Gloucester team sheet, I’ll admit to recognising very few names. Credit to Glaws for playing their up-and-coming lads.
My hope is we will see two evenly matched teams this weekend. No-one wants to see a repeat of the horrible 71-10 mismatch from four years ago…
Bath’s selection will be impacted by England A. Richards, Sela and Tuipulotu all featured against Bristol and all (along with Max Ojomoh) are in the squad to play Spain. Add in the injury sustained by Alfie Barbeary in that game and we will see changes.
Assuming the coaches want a degree of consistency in selection, we could see a XV that looks something like this:
Woods; Offiah; Harris; Butt; Griffin; De Glanville; Le Roux; Kirk; Spandler; Summerfield; Jeanes; Cuckson; Timmins; Staddon; Green.
If such a pack is deemed a little light in experience, then perhaps a Ross Molony or Tom Dunn might appear, but given our mounting injury list they may well be wrapped up in cotton wool.
Whoever is picked will need no motivation. Wearing the blue, black and white at Kingsholm is not something any Bath player takes lightly and these young men will be desperate to go as far as they can in retaining their trophy. It has the makings of a very entertaining game of rugby. COYB!
According to The Chron, Will Butt will Captain in Ewen Richards' absence. If TdG also plays - and Harris, there will be a strong core of midfield experience to direct the team.
Very nice preview Rokobilly, excellent points about the incoherent scheduling of this competition.
I'd be pretty happy with the team you've suggested, but I think we'll need a few senior guys on the bench if we want to stand a realistic chance of getting a win. There will be some non-international players who might benefit from a run out in this weird period of the rugby calendar, the likes of:
Ted Hill - was described as "touch and go" for selection against Bristol in the league 3 weeks ago, hasn't played since 3rd October.
Joe Cokanasiga - hasn't played since 25th October
Thompson Cowan - haven't seen any indication that he's injured, but only played one game back in September
Austin Emens - seems to have been playing for the university side instead of the PRC team recently, so not sure if he's slipped down the pecking order
Louie Hennessey - wonder if the Welsh camp would release him to get some more minutes, don't think it's likely he'll feature against Japan
Ross Molony - hasn't played since 25th October
Cameron Redpath - hasn't played since 25th October
Francois van Wyk - hasn't played since 25th October
Enoch Opoku-Gyamfi - in the Italian squad but won't be getting selected against the Springboks, another who might benefit from some minutes

Valid point BBB. How long is too long for a rest? You've listed half a dozen who you'd expect to be in the squad for Sarries on the 30th if fit. Five week rest period after only five games of the season.
They're not sat around twiddling their thumbs of course, but there is no substitute for playing games if you want to be match sharp.
Then add the boys who are in international squads but not getting any/many minutes - probably another half a dozen - and you start to think a game in the Prem Cup probably isn't a bad idea.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more experienced players appearing on the bench.
My main concern is the front row and avoiding what happened in the last 20min v Bristol.
We can't afford anyone less experienced than Kirk/Summerfield/Verden/Spandler so I wouldn't be surprised to see Dunn & FVW. Think we might see TCS too.

tigersimon Agree with the Preview, not certain of the purpose of the PRC anymore!
Simply to fill a void in the schedules of Prem clubs that are losing money - get some bums on seats, sell a few pies / pints and get some players a few minutes. The results are largely irrelevant to most of the teams as it stands (like the Carabao Cup in football) - certainly until / if you get to the pointy end.
I think Bath have given the PRC a very good purpose.
It's an essential player development tool and gives a lot of 2nd tier players badly needed game time.
OK that purpose may not be shared across all clubs. Why not?
Does Bath have an academy/development pathway that much better?
Can other clubs just not afford it?
Seems to me the academy is the first place clubs should spend their money, a £1m marquee player the last! I admit it's nice to have both and a lot of clubs definitely can't afford that.

jayeatman Does Bath have an academy/development pathway that much better?
- Saints, like Bath, have an excellent pathway. Both are usually up there on u18 acad finals day.
- Tigers, Sarries, Quins, Exeter are OK, seem to hold onto and bring through a few. Exeter let theirs down in the Prem cup by playing senior guys which didnt help their progress last season.
- Gloucester has a great academy system through Hartpury but seems to lose a lot of them to Wales etc.
- Newcastle has a brilliant pathway (so usually does well at u18) but seems to lose nearly all of them to other Prem teams (us included) once they graduate
- Bristol has a really weak academy hence the need to do things like this and their poor performances at ACE (via SGS) and Acad levels.
The PRC should be an opportunity to showcase the next generation of rugby talent coming through, it's when clubs field sides that look almost indistinguishable from their Prem 23 that undermines the whole competition.
When Richards was in the team then I always felt safe that the pack would be well led .... definitely time for Staddon to step up as pack leader. I think this will be good for him as I don't remember him having a poor game to date.
So by my calculations the average age of our squad is just over 21, and we've got at least 6 teenagers involved, so as PG Tips says, we really are leaning into the spirit of the competition.
It's a nice looking team but with Harris, DeGlanville, Tuipulotu, Sela, Richards and Barbeary all removed from the Bristol lineup, one very short on experience particlularly the front row.
Average age 21.3
Will Roue, Bath Uni Fly half/Centre, so he'll be familar with the team.

Brilliant goal kicker from 10, solid tackler and great hands, moves to 12 to accommodate James Linegar.. I thought the centre partnership with Charlie Griffin looks very promising
he is just rock solid in the BUCS team so it will be interesting to see if that is transferable.
In my opinion he would walk into many academy sides, Not really a line breaking back more a manufactures of opportunities.

tigersimon For anyone not going up to Kingsholm.
PremRugby have just announced coverage on their YouTube channel from 19:25.
Finally they've seen sense! Nowadays streaming to Youtube shouldn't be much of a hurdle once you've got the cameras into the stadium.
Agreed - lots of us are happy to watch games on Veo (and even without a commentary) these days, so why not? OK it may not be BT Sport quality but at least we have the choice.

Completely agree Matt, Veo has improved steadily. Streaming clearly has a cost but Cardiff Met stream all their BUCS matches along with a few others.
There is good quality rugby to be viewed without the cost involved with a Prem game.

I’m not remotely interested in what their teammates are like when out on the lash. One of many tedious asides.

shipwrecked I'm not sure having a go at the commentary is fair. You could have listed to 5 Live sports extra or Radio Bristol and just watched on mute.
Isn’t the whole point of a a message board to comment on things??
Think we’re lacking invention in the short game, both the 1XV and this team.
Then twice when we did get a line break, the support wasn’t there quick enough and we conceded a turn over.
No shortage of effort, some skills lacking in difficult conditions. Thought Green looked good when he came on and Immanuel did well and had a lot of minutes

There were definitely some good individual performances in there as well tbf. +1 on Green

Of course it is, but to expect top class commentary and analysis from a couple of university lads who are probably doing it for free seem a bit harsh. Its basically the Hartpury set up and Ben Loader was a bonus.

It was a PREM rugby production and was apparently the result of recent investment in content. The live chat was pretty damming of the lack of full screen video, constant advertising and graphics taking up much of the screen.
Was it better than listening on local radio, probably, but a substantial downgrade on PRTV as was.
In relation to the game - I think there will be a few heads in hands when they watch the game back. Some decisions that were poor on the day, but then that’s the whole point of development games I guess. Was pleased with the progress of some others, Arthur Green (for example) continues to look good. I’m sure it was a useful exercise for the coaches to see where players are (or…aren’t).
From the part I saw (second half) that will surely frustrate both players and coaches.
Very winnable and almost did take it at the end but I agree, some poor choices.
Cuckson, Staddon. Green all good. Griffin too.
Bath needed ro get Griddin & Offiah into the game more.
With more mature dieexrion I think that would have been a win.
I get it, it is a game we should have won, however let us put a few things into perspective.
Away game at Glos against a side packed with 1st team squad and yet we are annoyed we lost.
The players will learn (hopefully) from their errors because that is the only way you turn tight defeats into well earned hard victories.
I would though weather taken into consideration, be about more concerned if I were Gloucester given the side they put out.
Agree I think young Green will be a star, very impressed with him and hearing that JvG and team also really stoked with how he is developing along with a few others.
Hate losing games but just sometimes it is hugely important in the development of players.
Some feel a tad harsh on the players and the coverage.
Average age of 21 with the likes of verden and butt skewing it up- lots of teenagers.
They made some bad decisions and made some silly mistakes but that's what young players do and it's just how quick they learn.
Main commentator watches a lot of bucs rugby so his knowledge was v good, most wouldn't have a clue about most of our squad last night.
Best game I have seen from cuckson, v physical and a nuisance on their lineouts. Finally fulfilling his promise after staying fit for a bit of time. Staddon good as always. A few nice moments from griffin, winters, emens.
Green and davies good off bench. Green was a bit too fast of thinking for his team mates a few times. He is a v good player- carries well, makes intelligent decisions ans has good feet/hands.
Felt like if there was a tmo lalaula would have been a v early red? Took kirk out of the game- looked v high, with force and no mitigation to me but just hope kirk is OK and kind of glad it stayed 15 vs 15.
Linegar kicked one from touchline and hit post from touchline but missed 2 easy kicks- really mixed bag.
I have no idea on the format of this cup, can we still progress after 1 win and 2 losses?

Two pools of 5, you play everyone in your pool home and away, so 8 matches, top two from each pool go to the semifinals. So with 5 matches to go and currently in 3rd we can still get top two.
Not sanctioned during the match, presumably due to the lack of TMO.
Kirk went off at 8 minutes (presumably injured in this incident), so if that was a straight red for Laulala, Bath should have had 72 minutes against 14, certainly might have changed the outcome…
Lots I don't understand about that. Was it actually the 19th Sept game vs Bristol? If so how come it took 2 months to come to a conclusion? Then why does it relate to Scott Kirk if its Bristol? Not the best journalism...quiet piggy.
He had a yellow card - which almost certainly would have been upgraded if there was a TMO

Because none of the above is true, and we all know about the standard of BBC's rugby journalism.
He put the hit on Scott Kirk on Friday, in the PRC match against Bath

This will probably come back and bite me during a Tigers v Gloucester match but honestly I can’t tell if Laulala is on the pitch or not.
He has made so little impression on me for a supposed AB who won’t be on a cheap contract.
Reminds me of the Franks brothers for Saints!
