O COME ALL YE SUPPORTERS. BATH v GLOUCESTER

Griffiths: miracles?

By PG Tips
December 21 2021

O COME ALL YE SUPPORTERS.   O come all ye supporters In blue and black and white O Come ye, O Come ye, To the Recreation Ground. Encourage your team who are Badly in need of Christmas cheer And praying for a miracle And praying for a miracle And praying for a miracle To turn things around!   Sing choirs of Bath folk (More in hope than expectation), To top off your Christmas With joy and with glee! Inspire your team To humble the old enemy: O Come and roar your lungs out O Come and roar your lungs out O Come and roar your lungs out For a derby victory!

O COME, O COME EDWARD GRIFFITHS

O come, O come Ed Griffiths to Bath

And put us back upon the winning path.

Put paid to all our sorrow and pain,

And make the Rec a fortress once again!

Rejoice! Rejoice! Ed Griffiths is here

Recovery begins in the New Year!

O come, O come Ed Griffiths and cheer

Our spirits at this festive time of year.

Disperse the mood of misery and gloom

And bring back winning habits with your new broom!

Rejoice! Rejoice! Ed Griffiths is here

Recovery begins in the New Year!

KINGSHOLM DONKEY

Little donkey, little donkey

The Gloucester refrain.

All that braying, so dismaying

Really such a pain.

On any error they seize

Eeyore, Eeyore!

Oh won’t you silence them please!

It’s such a bore! It’s such a bore!

Little donkey, little donkey,

The sound of the shed.

So moronic and so plonky,

Time to knock it on the head!

DECK THE REC

Deck the Rec with boughs of holly

Fa la la la la, la la la la!
Banish rugby melancholy!

Fa la la la la, la la la la!

At the meanest of derby matches

Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Sink the Gem and quaff the Thatchers,

Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Enjoy the mince pies and the bubbly,

Fa la la la la, la la la la!

A derby win would be lovely jubbly!

Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Give your team your vocal backing

Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Help to send the shedheads packing!

Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our readers!

PG

PS: As it’s Christmas, and in light of recent news, a lighthearted review for the Boxing Day derby in place of the usual prediction of effort and defiance in an, ultimately, frustrated cause.

Be interesting to see the crowd turnout this Sunday, Spurs down 25% last Sunday, big gaps at Welfare Rd as well. The Clown and his lunatic fringe have done such a good job at scaring the c--- out of everyone . I welcome the changes at the club things just cannot get any worse, hold on there Glouc' up next maybe they can, Bath rooted to the bottom entrenched might be a better description and going nowhere not only will staff be moving but i expect a few senior players will.

The scientists might have scared a few people but some London boroughs are up to 2,500 people infected per 100,000. That is 1 in 40 known to be positive, quite a lot in a large crowd. Fortunately we are not so bad out West but the wave is moving very fast.

At least we can support the club in a more positive mood knowing there are changes on the way.

I have been for a few jogs to earn a bit of extra Christmas Dinner.

Sounds like they did a tough session last Fri when games was confirmed as of, had weekend off, then been in all week.

Let's hope we are through the worst of the squads covid outbreak as that 23 names for la rochelle was threadbare

I haven’t missed a Bath vs Glos game in 20 years, but will probably sit this one out. Like many of his colleagues in the “blue light” services and other front line key workers, our son is rostered to work on 25th and 26th December so for us, Christmas Day will effectively be the 27th. I know all the appropriate safety protocols are in place at the Rec, I’m triple jabbed and have also had Covid, but this time Family comes first and I’m taking a very risk averse approach. After the last couple of years it’s simply not worth risking our slightly delayed Christmas!
Can we also take a moment to spare a thought for all those who’ve lost loved ones or can’t be with their families for whatever reason. It’s going to be hard for a lot of people.
I’ll be there in spirit!

Is Teague the TMO? I thought having Wayne Barnes as the ref previously was a bit iffy, if nothing else it puts him in a difficult position.

Perhaps the standby needs to be someone local for logistical reasons, covid travel etc.

Pretty stupid decision by those who appoint the officials, puts him in a difficult position if he makes a genuine mistake in Glos favour.

O/H is 3rd trimester, so I’ve made it to I think 2 earlier games this season (TBH, I’ve tried to forget them, but last was Sarries and I’ve not forgotten that enough) and now I’m back to ultra cautious as the risks during the final weeks of pregnancy due to covid aren’t good. I’m missing out both on experience and financially, but I risk losing infinitely more. Each to their own to establish their risk appetite.

Looking like a wise decision to give this a miss.

Ellis for not rolling away.

Boyce for collapsing a maul when they were clearly going to score so doubled up with pen try.

Mike Williams gave a v stupid pen and then backed it up with backchat and getting marched back 10 yards.

What is dreadful though is we are just accepting it as normal. No-one is getting angry or directing the pack in any way. Its just woops we messed up! angry smiley

Players get injured, next man up.
The problem is we have no identity, no game plan for those players to fit into a system. It's just heads up panic rugby.

That is on our coaches and ultimately our DOR. All need to go now.

This is truly awfully embarrassing now, the lowest I have ever felt as a Bath supporter and they goes back 40 years.

Let’s stop making excuses shall we, yes we have injuries but so do other clubs but they still play with pride. I know we have a new coach coming next year but by then we will be so far behind it will be asking him to perform miracles. Hooper and his team need to go now and let the players take over for the rest of the season a la harlequins as surely it can’t be any worse than this.

Dallaglio and Healy sound embarrassed for us and sound genuinely exasperated at how bad Bath are.

Ed Griffiths needs to stamp his mark now and be ruthless with this coaching team, this cannot go on it is making us a laughing stock.

I prefer to watch Trowbridge play now who my nephew plays for. They have been ravaged with injuries and lack of player availability but boy do they give 100% every game and play with a clear plan and style. They are in a league where they have to compete with much larger clubs but are currently 5th in their league through skill but also hard work and pride.

Bath are currently just an embarrassment and don’t deserve the support they are still getting. Our loyalty can only be stretched so far.

If you want to enjoy your rugby and see some genuine love for the game and commitment I would say go to your local club instead.

I accept our list of unavailable players is fairly crazy. Every club is missing several players every match, nature of the game.

Your options are:
1) use it as an excuse week after week after week after week
2) view it as an opportunity for squad players to get games and improve.

We are missing loads of players but not sure who these guys are who are consistently amazing for bath who will come in and make a huge difference.

It's deckchairs on the titanic stuff if we are honest.

We are totally clueless and our best, most committed leaders are 19-24 years old (well done yet again landy and mojo today).

Thank god big changes are on the horizon otherwise it would be utterly depressing.

1: Glaws jogging off at halftime Bath walking
2: Stuart Hoopers post match interview

I think there is a real leadership issue from the DOR to the captain, it looks like standards aren’t being held which then causes a lot of other issues. Hooper is painful to listen to after matches and comes across as clueless to the situation.

If Bailey had a couple more years on him he would have rightly told Williams to belt up and do his job.

Genuinely feel there is a need for 3/4 forwards at least who are mid to late 20s with experience of how to run games.

The academy kids are good players but there is such a lack of leadership around them from senior pros in the pack in particular.

He set a fine example by giving away a stupid penalty and then making that penalty kickable with backchat and getting marched 10 yds.

Absolute liability imho yet still gets picked ahead of richards in the backrow today and then gets picked above spencer in the second row when mcnally pulled out. Says it all, reward stupidity.

Bailey has shown way, way more character and spirit (and talent this season).

Did he say that in his management motivational handbook 51% of teams who walk off at half time go on to win!?

I have an element of sympathy for ewels but he is cut from the same cloth I think sadly. Think it's getting to the stage where he should be unburdened from leading this failing group. International and club coaches clearly rate him for some reason so maybe let him concentrate on his game.

Those 3 for me have had their chance now. Every game it is the same with very little positive to mitigate the daft penalties. I don't care how stretched the squad is, there has to be some consequence when you are a liability, especially when you are supposed to be the experienced players. Losing stooke at the time seemed like a bad decision and now looks criminal.

I think we need a lot more than 3_4 forward. Whilst we may have 1 player in each position that is up to it, in the front 5 we have no depth at all.

Always find the ‘support til I die’ stuff bemusing. I’m not against loyalty but in the pro era where’s the player loyalty? Doesn’t exist. Same with coaches etc. All about cash, cash, cash (and over a short career I get why players do it). But why, in all sports, supporters remain loyal I’m not sure.

I was Bath season ticket holder for 30 wonderful years whilst living in the City. But in 2008 (stilll lived in Bath) I bailed out - the cost, the facilities, getting wet on the flower pots, the product began to decline.

Since 2008, having lived and been educated in Exeter I switched to Exeter (Chiefs). I feel fortunate to have followed 2 clubs who both won European titles and, more importantly, followed them both through their embryonic stages.

Who knows, if my next move is to Leicester, I may think again....😂

That was embarrassing as was SH post match interview.
It’s culture. SH as captain oversaw fairly mediocre performances where there was little if any on field leadership from him. This culture is now fully ingrained into the club and Charlie Ewels is a symptom of it not a cause of it. Who did he learn ‘leadership’ from?
I think it’s hard /impossible to suddenly change from being one of the players to being their boss. Look a Murphy at Tiggs for another example.
Hooper has to go.
Until he does the culture of mediocracy will continue whoever else is brought in.

Re. above.
Another pertinent question might be "how do you justify calling yourself a rugby coach or whatever fancy title you have been given week after week after week"? Analysing who is or who is not playing is irrelevant. Hatley and Hooper have very obviously lost the trust and respect of the players.

But I suppose that would be censored or shouted down.

It appears that some are prepared to 'stay in post', not even go on 'garden leave' as has happened to members of the team in the past. It is truly shocking. Shame on them.

Some decent line breaks and first phase play. We created chances - we really did.

But...
Dumb yellow cards (just completely brainless offenses right in front of the ref)
Sloppy knock ons. Over and over and over.
Soft forward play. Just getting steamrolled. Sad to watch.
Dumb kicking (when you're down to 13, prob best NOT to give the ball to the other team?)

This must have been one of the most disappointing performances I have ever seen from Bath. The younger players gave some good individual performances, but a lot of the older players appeared not to care too much, with the exception of Spencer who tried hard but ultimately it was 15 individuals playing against a well drilled, well coached team. Just thank whoever you believe in that our coaches and DOR are not in charge of anything more important than a rugby club.

Poor retention - getting stripped when we have to hold the ball for more than three seconds in contact.

Ojomo, Bailey and Roko were good.
You can add nowhere near enough cover at the breakdown, Jordy Reid was given it all on a plate. So much of our attacking ball wasted.

How much to buy JvG out of his remaining contract with Munster? I’ve start with Eu10 in change from when I used to have holidays abroad.

PS surely a question at a post match interview for SH is ‘what’s it like being completely out of your depth in your job’
I’d be genuinely interested in how he replies.

Why don't you ask him yourself and find out?

Well, firstly I don’t have access to him to ask a question.
Then he quite rightly should ignore the anguish of a disappointed fan.
But questions need to be asked of him by those he is contractually obliged to answer
Sadly the club has proven it will not go there.

I am interested in the mindset of someone who is clearly failing in his job.
Does he realise the wheels gave come off the wagon?
If so does he know how to put them back on?

Or does he think dragging a sleigh is more efficient than a wagon?

Does he look at himself in the mirror and think he really can improve things?

I really do wince when anyone calls into question the physical commitment of the players. I took some family members who had never been to a professional rugby game before and do watch football. They knew Bath came second but their eyes were watering long after the game at the way players put their bodies on the line. Bath were awful. Hooper is so far out of his depth he should wear armbands to the game. Mike Williams should be nowhere near our first team. Other clubs can manage with an injury list. We can’t. A yellow card AND 7 points is utterly stupid and disproportionate and ruins games of rugby. Will Stuart - for 15 minutes recovered his form of 2 years ago. So someone decided to take him off. Bailey is fantastic but the reverse dink is starting to look like the toy that gets worn out by Boxing Day. Spencer is fantastic but there are moments when he sucks the life out of a bit of momentum.

Problem is Opti there are forwards who simply arrive too late. Then all they do is make a token effort with perhaps another late comer to push back an already rolling maul.

No-one knows what to do, when to do it and with whom, its an utter shambles. Bailey made a break today yet had no-one within 15m of him. JJ got to his man who was on the ground and instead of going for the ball he just stood over him looking confused, he should be leading the backs for goodness sake.
Then Bailey gets criticised by Williams after being targeted by Harris, ( arguably the best defensive centre around at the moment) in a double tackle for losing the ball close to the line. He needs to improve his retention true but him TdG and Mojo need support and dummy runners they can't take on the opposition on their own.

Today everyone was playing to preserve their own playing credibility. Everyone was an individual, there is no team work.
Bath games from now on are going to be simply damage limitation in terms of score and reputations for all involved, nothing was an improvement today.

Just watched the game.

"It's idiotic rugby" - Austin Healy.

One is tempted to concur. I could not see what we were trying to do in attack, there was no organisation at all in defence and no leadership or on- field intelligence in evidence anywhere.

One presumes JvG will fire all the coaches and it would be very hard to disagree on that showing because I can't see what they do. The experiment of a rookie coaching team under a rookie DoR has failed miserably and its time to draw a line under it.

At least Sam seems OK.

MotM - OB2. A light in the darkness.

I wonder if hoops position is still up for review tbh. Ed g doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Do we really expect jvg to line into him and report to him.

I guess it could work if hoops has a limited and v clear remit but you compare the cv's and it is pretty clear who should be making the
key decisions.

I do find it pretty staggering to see absolutely zero 'bounce ' from the defense coach coming in. Expected a minimum of some fire in the belly and desire to defend.

Zero bounce from jvg announcement when they must know their future boss is watching and many must be playing for their futures.

Appreciate for some elements of this are demotivating but not for the majority.

I genuinely didn't think we could keep sinking lower but we look utterly clueless and that was v embarrassing...

The other thing I find staggering whilst I am on a rant is the complete absence of any on field leadership.

That's not only a criticism of ewels, absolutely no senior players step up other than spencer imho.

He tries to do too much but that's because he is having to display the desire, skill, commitment and influence of about 10 men. Having come from sarries culture I bet he can't believe what he is seeing.

I would make him capt personally. Ewels looks absolutely mentally shot to me. Let the poor guy just play now and try to live up to being an international lock.

Richards , bailey and mojo were great.they make mistakes and bad decisions like any 19/20/21 yr olds do but jeeze they don't go missing. Their desire to get on the ball and influence the game is brilliant. Bailey has grown massively this season. Mike Williams having a pop at him sums it up- in the year 2046 he will still be tackling bolt upright and getting cards given his ability to learn and develop.

I could no more change my allegiance to Bath than I could swap my kids.

Skivington has come in and absolutely drilled them on the basics like set piece and driving maul.

Borthwick has come in and absolutely drilled leic on the basics like set piece and driving maul....

They are both massively improved yet its a mystery to our coaches as to how we could improve (or they fundamentally don't have the ability to improve us).

Any replacement is short term, & possibly expensive.
No relegation, so only risk is demotivated players wanting away or demotivated fans wanting away.
So why have the upheaval?

When we comment on the young backs I wonder if we give them enough credit? Given the awful coaching set up, a pack going backwards, plus the opposition defensive forwards hunting on the front foot, it is not a great position for a set of really young backs but they ran at the opposition at every chance and did not take a back wards step. Certainly they made mistakes, hardly surprising, but they will, along with McC and Muir make a very decent backline. As long as we can keep them - if this season does not improve we may not be relegated but our best young players will be looking for new pastures - and who could blame them.

I haven't seen the game yet but reading the comments above I wonder what would happen if you took any team at rock bottom (not just Bath or even rugby) and removed the coaches completely from the set up.

Let the players work it out for themselves for a few weeks, they are professional sportsmen who must have opinions and know where the weaknesses lie. The void of leadership would be partly filled by those not yet given the opportunity to play that role.

These theories are sometimes seen in the corporate world during away days, drop a group in a forest and let them work it out.

Could it be any worse?

Surrounded by incompetence everywhere and stepping up to own and lead things I think.

Bailey has improved hugely from last season. He is definitely adding distance to his kicking game from hand and tee. His commitment in defence is always impressive. His distribution is improving and threatens the line.

Makes mistakes and bad decisions but for a 10 who has just turned 20 I think he is hugely promising.

I think richards and mojo are also potentially both future England internationals. Stupidly early call by me I appreciate but it's largely down to the character they are showing in impossible circumstances.

Early on there was a massive kick to touch and two long range penalties, very reminiscent of Rhys Priestland at his best. His variety is excellent and he breaks the line so holds defences, completely agree.

I haven't had the strength to watch the recorded game.

Can someone tell me the penalty count...........I'm guessing 16 to 10.

Dayglo and Healey saying how rubbish Bath are is more a release from them for 20 years of hurt, although of course they are correct, but I would not listen to anything Dallaglio says.

A still playing son of friends said the players did not look fit.........if true then absolutely appalling.

As I have said before we could now lose every game this season as everybody has seen how easy it is to beat us .................we concede a penalty on the half way line by any one of several half -witted indisciplined players, kick for the corner rolling maul, we concede another penalty repeat, but of course much nearer and then score a try. Conversion might be a bit tricky but then just wait and repeat again as Bath will of course concede another penalty on the half way line.

Given that I would remove all of the coaches and let the "senior" players takeover...........but given yesterdays performance maybr we let the sub 25's takeover as they at least have some pride and of course we have nothing to lose.

I was asked yesterday did London Welsh lose all of their games, to which I was able to reply NO because I was at the Kassam when they bear..........................guess who BATH

Well it really says it all when the best play from our forwards was Stuart's deft kick to the corner

I thought the double yellow cards was harsh and no doubt made defensive work much harder but for all the positive stuff from the likes of Spencer, Bailey, Roko, and TdG if we are getting beaten up at ruck and maul and conceding so many needless penalties then the game is always going to go easily one way

I take malco's point about so many first pick players missing and losing Underhill so early didn't help but that can't explain being stuffed week in week out

I can only hope that Brent's input will improve defence and give Hatley more time to focus on the maul and breakdown work. But the longer it goes on without significant improvement there the more Hatley's position looks untenable in any role

Just a terrible performance, look completely clueless. As mentioned many times on here, we seem to be unable to carry forward one aspect of our game to the next, its like we're a completely different team each week. Exact opposite to Gloucester who have been building slowly and have now become a formidable force. What are the coaches doing? Do they gather on Monday morning and think the scrum went well so we won't bother training that this week.

If you compare our pack to Gloucester's', how many Gloucester players would you take over the Bath ones. Not many IMO. Yet they had us on toast, like men against boys.

Come the end of the season, they should just play the academy boys and give the senior squad the month off because I think JVG will need every second available to him over the summer to turn this team around.

Players get injured, next man up.
The problem is we have no identity, no game plan for those players to fit into a system. It's just heads up panic rugby.

That is on our coaches and ultimately our DOR. All need to go now.

We have a mix and match team of academy kids playing against a practically full strength side in good consistent form.

We were practically full strength Malco.? We were without Polledri, Slater, Morgan, May, Carreras, and Elrington all of whom would be in our best squad if available (and possibly Woodward too).
Undeniably you have some talented players, but to me (and I was there yesterday) they look poorly coached, uncertain and lacking in self confidence.

True fans do not switch allegiance, they might stop watching their team but would never switch to a better team.

Exactly.

My final comment is that I clearly gave my reasoning (had you bothered to clearly read them)and I’m also not sure that Exeter Chiefs were a better side than Bath in 2008!! Back then no one could have predicted their respective paths from 2010 and beyond.

Ditto, loved Stuart’s kick to the corner for touch. Followed a couple of plays later by a very classy sidesstep. Would add him and Spencer to list of achievers with OB, Roko and TdG.
ThoughtJordy Read for them was fantastic. Agree basic theme, DoR should do everyone a favour and step down without delay.

Malco, they are Pro rugby players.

I'd take Bailey and Ojomoh off your hands, if they fancy following Banners up the A46.....

I appreciate you are exaggerating for effect but I really would not describe Bailey (by omission) as our 4th choice 10.

... IMHO, of course.

The most interesting parts were the interviews with Hooper. It's still all very murky what he actually does and what he will do. Hope Ed Griffiths has a clear vision of the division of Labour.

Likewise, just to echo the above, Bath are struggling at the fundamentals and they are playing like a team that knows they can't rely on the fundamentals. Rash kicks, slowing down on the break, trying two phases and kicking it away, the defence overall.

It'd be one thing if the failings weren't so obvious but when they are now visible in their 12th iteration it's all the more galling. Some of the attacking play is nice but if we need to apurn a bit of that to get a solid set piece, so be it.

He started the season as fourth choice. There is no way I'd play Cipriani ahead of him now.

Bath haven’t won any games all season and maybe the last 5 of last season.
