Bath could catch a severe case of exposure playing away at Sale on Friday night. The match looks set to be played in minus temperatures, with wind chill likely to exaggerate the freezing feeling. More chilling to the bone than the Manchester weather though would be the icy prospect of another failure. Unfortunately, with Sale buoyed by victory at Bristol last week, another bleak Friday night looks likely. With the relegation battle already tight, Bath cannot afford another freeze.
Friday nights at Sale usually offer Bath extremely cold comfort. They did snatch a bonus point win there last season (on a Sunday), but as many as 6 of the forwards who dominated that day could be unavailable this week. With Bath’s last win 3 months ago, Sale, triumphant last week at Ashton Gate, where Bath imploded the week before, will be firm favourites. This season Sale have not scored many tries- exactly the same number in fact as Bath, but they concede very few and sit comfortable in 3rd with 6 wins from 8 matches. Their experienced and belligerent pack, built around the South Africans Wiese and Du Preez, plus Ross and Beaumont will expect to be too much for a probably makeshift and youthful Bath 8. Behind them, master tactician Faf De Klerk at 9 and McGinty at 10 can play the varied game to kick Sale into the right areas of the pitch, break close or pass wide to stretch and turn a defence. In the backs the two James’s, Hill and McGuigan are hard, direct runners who can exploit any defensive weakness without need for subtlety. Marland Yarde, no longer on England’s radar, can still find his way to the line. His finishing could be the icing on the cake.
Bath must once again try to cobble together a match 23 hampered by injury and international callups. Hopefully Josh McNally will have recovered from his HIA to add his heft, experience and leadership in the second row. That would permit Josh Bayliss, tireless in 2 recent losing causes at lock to return to the back row, where crucially, he should be less prone to conceding needless penalties. At the risk of clutching at straws, I detected a couple of sparks of hope in Saturday’s defeat by Quins. Tian Schoeman attacked the gainline and passed flat, bringing runners onto the ball at pace. I would start him to shake up the laboured deep passing game we have had to endure recently. Will Muir too looks worth a start. His pace, power and enthusiasm were notable in a late surge of spirit, mostly from the younger players. Of these, Tom de Glanville, recovering from a tormenting experience against Bristol stood out for courage and willing counter attack throughout. Again, I will not offer a selection prediction this week, just reflect that the coaches have some tough decisions to make- on form and attitude as much as injury and availability.
Defence must be the priority in training, to plug the gaps that let opposition runners through like an arctic wind. Defence alone though, cannot win matches, especially if the pack is on the back foot. Ill- discipline blunted momentum and handed the initiative to Quins too often, as it had against Bristol. Bath also need to find the invention in attack that their last three opponents have shown, back it up with the pressure to force kickable penalties and a performance of emotional energy to unsettle Sale with their intensity.
A win seems unlikely, but as the Calcutta cup showed, records are there to be defied. Bath must find the heated passion to thaw the frosty prospect in front of them.
Well based on Bath's record up there as well as the current form book for both sides I'm not sure it's worth the trip up there...one of the most muscular sides in the league against one of the least, I'm normally reasonably optimistic but think will will come home with yet another big 'L.
Even if we had a full strength squad and were playing well, it would be a tough ask to go to Sale and get a win, so expectations are not high. Agree start Tian Schoeman with Spencer . At least try to give the backs some ball to play with and don't keep kicking it away please.
Agree, it could be a long evening. Whilst we're on a near-vertical downslope, we're running into teams (Bris, Quins, Sale) bursting with confidence and freedom to play. In Quins and Sale's case, amazing what a change of coaching can do...
With the absentees we've got, I can picture de Klerk having a field day (night) behind a pack on top. We need StookNally fit to have a chance of parity, as don't think our other injured will be back.
The best that can come from this period is that the likes of Reid, Bayliss, de Glanville, TH-W, Muir add to their experience. For a guy like Bayliss to be captaining and leading the forward effort on his own will stand him in good stead. I've been very impressed with him in adversity and a Friday night in the cold in Manchester versus a good, physical team will be another chance to step up. He needs to prove that even when we have a fully fit pack to choose from he should be our starting 6/7 – and he's getting close. Same for de Glanville at 15.
Sale's Sanderson-inspired defence was awesome v Bris' all-singing-all-dancing attack. It could make ours look non-existant. Need either Priestland and Spencer to kick the leather off it or Schoeman to start without the weight of the world on his shoulders, give it a lash by putting some pace on the game and our wide guys into space (like he did for 20m on Saturday), pick JJ, JC, Roko outside a 10 that looks like he likes to run, and see if we can, at least, go down fighting.
I suspect Stuart Hooper is dreading it !
As you say its going well with the tweaking and twerking and looking for massive positives , resilience and
needing to harness the energy and come together .
After all , " lets not move away from the fact we are here to win games "
Sadly i can see nothing but a pasting 50-6 !!

Now that Bath are generally rubbish it takes the pressure off watching the games, I can look forward to it with a sense of curiosity with the hope that like the last 20 minutes on Saturday, something new and vibrant can emerge.

Optimist Do we actually know the situation with JJ? Was he rested/dropped/injured last week?
Ben coles (?) tweet suggests we are expecting a few back fit for fri inc JJ.
Although he has been off form I still prefer an off form JJ to clark.
10/12 is where I would be tempted to do something. I quite like the 'give it to gray/muir at 12 to smash it up ' plan. They both have exceptional offloading skills as well. Doesnt feel we have much to lose esp with tdg as another kicking option in the backline.
Hopefully the 'few' others inc at least one of mcnally and stooke.
charlieboa I quite like the 'give it to gray/muir at 12 to smash it up ' plan. They both have exceptional offloading skills as well. Doesnt feel we have much to lose esp with tdg as another kicking option in the backline.
Hmmm, rookie 15s players in unfamiliar 12 position doesn't sound ideal - I'll bet Sam James etc would be licking his lips. I would be interested to know how Max O is getting on, he is over 20 now and only 9 months younger than Redpath (and about the same as Ollie L when he broke into Worcester). At least he has played 12 for many years with some age grade International success as well as knowing players like TDG for ever.
What we are being told is that the likes of OB and MO are part of the future but need to be introduced to a stable Bath team.
Given where we are this season that might not happen until next season. Something has to give somewhere as I think that is too long to be kept off the rugby field or bench. Its laudable but counterproductive.

Not sure it can be both laudable and counterproductive SW. It's one or the other. But I don't think there would be anything laudable about chucking a young centre in for a freezing Friday night away to the Sale Boks!

Laudable to protect the player, counterproductive in delaying his introduction. Do you think the club should continue to hold back these guys Opti, they are not kids? If so for how long? I agree this Friday away to Sale isn't ideal though.

Tweak Overdrive this week Woody. Sounds like it should be a 70s band but actually its just the fine tuning needed to turn a team which concedes tries for fun into world beaters.

Honest question who is our defence coach ? is Hatley head coach, forwards coach and defence coach. if so that seems a bit silly to combine all those roles ?! Asking as our defence is awful (truly awful) and this seems like and area we can improve, if we don't have one person doing the role that seems like a major oversight to me ??

You might be onto something there, i did a CTRL F for 'defence' on the Rugby Department and nothing came up, even though there are 33 humans in it.

So we have one person working as a lineout coach, and one person working as headcoach, forwards coach and defence coach. I would have thought something like Hats as head/forwards coach, then someone hard northerer potentially with a league back ground to sort out our defence. Im not DOR but just saying seems obvious to me.

I am certain Sale away would have to rank as one of the least, if not the least, successful trips in our prem history. The "freak" result aside, I can not remember too many successes here, or at Haywood Road?
Am expecting the Paxo to be out in force on Friday.

I share your frustration SW.
When is this mystical time when the stars align to give them a go?
I assume its when we are playing amazingly, all the experienced players are around and fiit, yet selectors who seem v risk averse decide to throw some youngsters in even though they don't need to.
I understand the logic, I just think its unrealistic.there is also covid context- there are promising players who haven't played a game of rugby for a year, and probably won't get one till apr/may. Other clubs used their squads and academy during restart. We will feel that pain long term.
In their (hoops/hats) defence they have managed someone like tdg quite well I think (and just thrown gh-w in when they didn't have to).
I just think our midfield is a total mess. Is is really risking disaster to play ojomoh , gray or muir between spencer/rhys and JJ? We concede about 6 tries a game, if we concede 6 on Friday would they hang them out to dry? If we all accept we will probably get pumped anyway is it not conversely a good time to try something?

We have made ten changes to the starting lineup from the Bristol game so clearly we are giving you a great chance.! Presumably Sanderson taking a look at the squad. We are looking forward to the commentator grappling with the Du Preez x4 starting for the first time. As it’s predicted to be -4 the Saffers might not fancy it. Bath to win by 7.
Well I guess our gameplan remains the same. Deep lying fly half either kicks long and hopes the opposition stuff up or passes ball onto straight running centres to crash into a crowded midfield and consistently lose ground &/or possession.
Sale overconfidence is our biggest hope .... I hope my fears are misplaced but I can't remember feeling less confident in a Bath team for a very long time.
indeed it is ridiculous we have no dedicated defence coach. i believe we might be the only team in the prem without one which helps to explain our stats. hatley has been touted as scrum and defence coach but i have never seen him in the role of defence coach before, even before he went away with england. i would say the guy has enough on his plate dealing with the head coach job-something that is new to him- without having extra responsibilities thrust at him for which he has no obvious training.
i thought that craig's french buddy from toulouse pierre broncan was supposed to be helping out with defence (in addition to his main purpose of being craig's spy around farleigh house), but i am surprised to discover that broncan slipped away last summer under the cover of covid, and is now head coach at castres. they didn't announce anything, did they?
so why do we have no defence coach? well this has the same smell about it as the failure to replace tabai matson when he resigned or the inability of blackadder to bolster recruitment on his arrival at the rec (apparently he was promised this). in other words The Used Car Salesman (TM) refuses to spend the money. they would rather indulge in marquee recruitment (cips) than spend modestly on assembling a decent and experienced coaching team.
so here we are. one of the least experienced coaching set ups in the prem, the only club with no defence coach, a DoR with a blank piece of paper for a CV. is it any wonder we are down amongst the dead men?
Defence is not a word in the Bath lexicon... well, at least not according to their press release!!
Perhaps someone could tell them to switch their spellchecker to the UK-English version. They might also like to tell them that Alex Sampson is not DOR at Sale...
I am trying desperately to be positive but Friday nights at Sale have generally been a graveyard for us over the years and with much better teams on paper, sadly I cannot see it changing tomorrow night but I would love to be proved wrong.
We’ve done a lot of work on defence and it is something that Hats takes a lot of pride in and obviously, he’s been disappointed in the results there, we all have.
I guess that as he takes pride in it he has responsibility for it, well him and the chef.
Its going to be -2 on Friday, although we are likely to get thumped, sometimes miracles happen.
I don't like losing, but especially when former bath players are in the opposition team, its like your ex-girlfriend getting with a richer more handsome fella. With Attwood in the Bristol team last week, James Phillips in the Sale team this week and Matt Garvey likley in the Glous team next week, I fear salt being rubbed in an already sore wound, especially as they are all bloomin locks and by next week we will have Max Green and Chudley in the 4/5 shirts !!!!
Now trying to be positive - It is a game of 80 or so minutes and not changing our game plan reminds me of General Melchett from Blackadder, when it was pointed out that the plan to walk slowly towards the enemy has failed on each and every occasion "And that is what is so brilliant about it! It will catch the watchful Hun totally off guard! Doing precisely what we've done eighteen times before is exactly the last thing they'll expect us to do this time!" Sound familiar
Alas I fear as Malco has stated the issues will probably come from the pack and the lack of physicality against a proven nasty Sale 8. I take it that apart from the supporters no one else in the training management has noticed just how slow Josh M has been shown to be?
It might be, just maybe our day depends on who is officiating and Sale having a serious off day. Not sure I can bring myself to watch this one!!
The pack is going to find it tough to get the ball. We will battle for parity in scrums and lineouts and I can only see one winner at the breakdown. Our loose forwards have stacks of spirit, speed and mobility but are physically dwarfed by the Sale back row.
Sale don't like to play with the ball. They like to beat teams up in the forwards and play rugby in the final third of the pitch. Under the lights on a bitterly cold night they will be kicking for territory and putting our back three under intense pressure.
Our opportunity will be to play counter attacking rugby from deep after fielding kicks. We need our half backs to both have their kicking games on song. There will be a lot of lineouts. Sale will look to dominate lineout possession, maul and then kick to the corners.
I'm honestly struggling to see how we can come out of this game on top with the personnel we have available and the personnel they are up against in the conditions they will face.
A losing bonus point would be a significant achievement.
I hate the fact that I am saying that about Bath.

It's what good teams do when you're playing a relegation threatened team and the result is foregone conclusion. Save your best players for a real challenge.
Just seen a stat which puts our current predicament into context and highlights just how poor a side we have been this season - especially when considering some of the shocking seasons we have experienced in the last 10/11 years.
Bath FC have not lost 5 matches in a row since 2002, given the growing pressure on Hoops that is a stat and record he certainly can do without - but no matter the injuries, abstractions, misdemeanours we have suffered (which is no different to other clubs) it is of our own making - negative game plans.
Looking at the sides there seems such disparity in terms of physicality and power surely we cannot can we? See Alex Sanderson has made comments directly to his team to be ruthless and not complacent.
Christophe Ridley officiating - not sure that helps our cause a great deal.

Don't know what the chef has been feeding them but its working. Not going to get carried away as to me it is a mix of good energy and better decision making but Sale are off their intensity and v poor to date. I think the removal of relegation and a couple of lucky breaks have boosted our confidence.
Hope we can get this home as there are some young men out there who deserve a positive result. Would like to see the new 10 get at least 20 mins.
They are pretty meaty though Gaz, lets hope they don't get going!
If we sit back and let it become an arm wrestle we will lose. Their big SA boys are punching holes. But if we nullify the route one physicality and play heads up we have a great chance to take five points.
Amazing what having one proper second row in the side can do...
Still plenty of opportunity to throw it away - we’ve been up by this much at h/t before and managed it! But Muir sharp. Roko lively. Even Matevasi hitting hard and throwing outrageous over the head passes! Pack fired up. Schoeman has done more in 40 minutes than his entire Bath career to date. Dunn his usual self. Bayliss everywhere.
Best 40 in a long while. More of the same please... PLEASE.
They are pretty meaty though Gaz, lets hope they don't get going!
Agree and not difficult to work out what their default lineout throw is but at half way mark our pack has held its own at scrum and breakdown. Just got smooshed a la Exeter from 5 metres out
Even did a decent job to defend a rolling maul from lineout close to our line

A good win I guess but that last 3 minutes of rugby was completely moronic. Of course now relegation has been cancelled none of it matters anyway. Well done PRL, you’ve removed any interest from the game this season until the playoffs.
Looked like some real togetherness in that win. The forwards were mighty - all in behind skipper McNally - and the backs showed some game management and flair.
One swallow does not in anyway a summer make, especially when it’s minus7, but considering the week or three we’ve had, I was not expecting that and so I’m going to enjoy it.
Well done Hooper and everyone else who will be on the coach home.
So so happy. Long road back but I was prepared for a beat down. Biggest plus for me was the obvious desire, intensity and buy in from Judge, Priestland, Mercer to name but 3 end of season leavers. Faith in the group restored a bit tonight. Now kick on.

Well done, a great Bath win, with a team that has to me got a soul, where the hell did you dig up a gem like Josh McNally,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thought the officials had a good game as well
I really hope that players like Muir, Bayliss, Read, TdG keep their places now and don't have to stand aside for Faletau, Underhill, JJ and AW. Glad to see that Titan got some time on the pitch and Alex Gray as well.

Good win on the road. The defence was there when it mattered! Like the look of Muir and TdG looking more dangerous with every match. Thomas was a disappointment penalty conceded at 1st scrum. Felt we could have got the try bonus at the end too but hey 4 points net gain of 3 on Glaws.
Loved the spirit - which, as Rokobilly says, with Mercer, Priestland and Judge trying their hearts out- suggests whatever the cause of our woes, it is not a simple issue of squad dissatisfaction.
I also liked the quick reaction counter attacks of the first half. Sale had the better of possession, territory, discipline and tackles but this was not so much a match of stats but effort - the only half time stats in Bath's favour were the 14 point score difference & tries 3-1.
It's too early to talk of "turning a corner" but if we can continue to play like that, I think we would be able to climb the table when all are available.

Well played Bath, I thought that our chances were very slim. Very happy to be proven wrong.
Great performance all round, but the forwards were immense. Special mention for Read and Williams, who along with McNally gets through so much work. Thought both centres had a decent show too.

We are looking forward to the commentator grappling with the Du Preez x4 starting for the first time. As it’s predicted to be -4 the Saffers might not fancy it. Bath to win by 7.

It didn't quite work out though, did it?
PG
Nope, didn’t watch it but I’m very happy for those that did.
At last we saw a reaction & they managed to just get over the line. It may mean we’re not quite ready for the Championship. It may also indicate that our highly paid internationals are not so much interested in Bath as their career path. We need to stick with the players who show real commitment & endeavour as long as they keep it up.
Chalk and cheese from 2 weeks ago. High skill, taking it to them, solid in the set piece. I especially liked Priestland stripping the ball off their rather spicy 6 just before half time. There seemed to be far more team spirit.
Priestland was a revelation, little chips ahead, a couple of runs at defence and drew his man perfectly for TdG's try. Still don't like the looping long pass though it just asks to be picked off.
Muir did some stripping as well, guess that was part of this weeks training.

Just watched the game. An unexpected pleasure. Creativity, passing, vision, grunt and tackling. We looked like a rugby team. A win based very much on set piece dominance tho despite the free-running stylings of TdG and Will Muir.
MotM - Tom Dunn. Simply superb in scrum, line and loose.
It’s interesting that this win was based on good execution of the set piece & a heck of a lot more individual effort & speed of thought & action. and helped by a sluggish performance by Sale. This was more like our form at the end of last season. What we still need is what hopefully Williams ? will bring to our attacking play which can inject another dimension in every game, not just when we are up for it.
It’s yet another example of our horrendous inconsistency, but it also revives the possibility that Hooper’s methodical foundation-building approach could come to fruition. Taking relegation out of the equation makes that much more possible and, by allowing him to put more responsibility on his younger, home-grown cohort and his own signings, could make it happen quite a bit quicker. Sam U and JJ, and even Ant will have to really pull their fingers out now if they want to start ahead of the likes of Reid, Bayliss, TdG and Muir.
False dawn or the start of a new era? Who knows? But at least I actually want to watch next week’s game.
For me, I’d like to see McCon given a go at 13, especially outside a distributing 12 like Redpath. He’s quick and strong enough and clearly learns quick. I think he’d be a real threat, a rangy runner perhaps a bit like Jean de Villiers.
shipwrecked I really hope that players like Muir, Bayliss, Read, TdG keep their places now and don't have to stand aside for Faletau, Underhill, JJ and AW. Glad to see that Titan got some time on the pitch and Alex Gray as well.
Agreed.
You have to admire the sheer guts of bayliss and Reid over recent weeks. Great engines and commitment.
I like the idea of having the internationals on the bench. We need to carefully manage their game time and reward guys who have stood up in their absence.
Someone like beno has been consistently excellent for bath and prob won't have got much game time for eng. Would bring him back in. Maybe same with ewels as can't see stooke getting many games any time soon. Would be nice to be able to bring the likes of Stuart, underhill, faletau, watson off the bench for impact!
I have been banging on about it being a better use of our resources to use tdg at 13 for a long time but may be talking nonsense. Doing a great job at 15 but personally like rmc in that spot.
I would love to at least see him or gray/muir/rmc given a go. Clark/wright are never going to put big pressure on JJ for his spot but one of those others possibly could.
Similar at 12. Josh had a good game last night and is fine as a third choice 10/third choice 12 but I would like to know if ojomoh (or bailey) has more potential to pressure redpath.
The Bear I've been quietly Impressed by McNally's growing influence and this week he seemed to really galvanise the team.
The last 10 minutes lacked control but it's much more fun to watch Bath playing well than badly. Can we keep it going?
I think mcnally is criminally undervalued by some I think.
People focus on what he can't do- not the best hands, not the most mobile.
He is a massive bloke though, excellent in the maul, makes tackles, hits rucks, anchors scrum on the tighthead side, well respected by players and coaches. Think he is our best lock personally.
Well done to hoops/hats as often think they are v formulaic in their approach especially subs.
Played it v differently last night and it paid off. Not really the night to throw 18 yr olds forwards into a game when its minus 4 and v physical.
Also keeping spencer on. He made a few errors last night but what a player, absolute class and light years ahead of chudley. Great signing and long may Eddie be blind to his ability.

So fantastic result which I watched last night......
I then watched Glos v Bristol.....if we had played Bristol playing like that we would have won. When we played them it is clear everything and, I mean everything went absolutely perfect. Last night they won by one point away at Glos......but lots of stuff didn't work and they made a lot of silly errors and they had two interception tries against them.
Sport is up and down.
However I am now going to make some stuff up now......for effect;
More offloads by Bath last night than the whole season added together.
RP more chip kicks than in his entire Bath career
However amongst all of the jubilation, Bath on the opposition 22 looking for the fourth try with 1 minute to go.........127 seconds later (untrue but for a effect) Sale score under the posts and get 7 points. My wife was sort of watching the last bit and said it looks like they've lost.......and it did because when you concede like that it takes a lot (well a bit) of the joy away.
All the same I would play the same team (squad) in the next match.
I haven't seen the game yet but clearly a great result.
It is hard to tell of course but could this be a turning point? A win like that against all the odds does not happen if there is no team spirit which gives me great hope.
It's a funny world where established 1st choice players are absent and the replacements pull off a shock win. What does that tell us?
Team spirit is a living thing, organic. Hoops needs to seize this moment as a catalyst for change, to pull the squad together, to back those who got the win and apparently played very well. Create competition for places where internationals do not automatically slide back in.
It doesn't matter if Sale were not at their best, you take a rare high point in a season and use it to your best advantage.
Where did that result come from? So happy to be proved totally wrong in my prediction, now let's see if we can keep building on that performance. A great start to the weekend!
Muir and McConnochie offer something rare in Prem rugby thats the ability to beat a man one on one by avoiding contact rather than through and over the opposition. Tom de Glanville has that outside arc and speed for a 13 but looks very dangerous at 15 so I'm not sure.
Watson should be competing for a wing spot and shouldn't get it until he shows his he is better than Muir, McConnochie, Roko et al. Neither should JJ for that matter.
I really love Sam Underhill but Reid and Bayliss are just electric around the field and Bayliss was right there to score following Zach's break, that exactly what a flanker should do. They should stay in the team on merit. Is Bayliss a fraction faster?
Redpath to return and I can't wait to see how Tian Schoeman (Titan?) runs a game, likes to have a go and his pass is flat and fast, the 12 gets ball early and at speed.
Can't wait to see more of him and Bailey.

Fair play that was excellent last night, huge shift from all the players. An intensity that hasn't been anywhere near all season.
Let's see them put 3 or 4 performances like that back to back and maybe it might actually mean something. It's easy to perform when everyone is saying how rubbish you are, let's see them do it consistently.
Following on from my last post - that was a huge effort particularly up front - Tom Dunn was immense as was Shoeman, Williams and McNally - the issue we have got still and this is no criticism but we cannot rely on the likes of Dunn week in week out - He is dynamic as is Mercer but we really do lack a serious ball carrier up front, and as dynamic as they are they do lack serious size, we need to strike the right balance and I am sure Mercers replacement will by the looks of it do that.
If we could secure a proper enforcer say I don't know Dave Attwood comes to mind that would take so much pressure off Dunn - his head was battered last night and you just wonder how long before he is broken and then we will be in trouble because Walker has never yet stepped up to the mark.
Ok, based on very limited evidence but it does seem, to me anyway, that Watson always takes the inside channel, trying to jink his way through the traffic whereas Muir last night and McC seem to mainly choose the outside line
gaz59 Ok, based on very limited evidence but it does seem, to me anyway, that Watson always takes the inside channel, trying to jink his way through the traffic whereas Muir last night and McC seem to mainly choose the outside line
Just me with that perception?
No, me too. It seems almost out of fashion to just go for the outside, trust your pace and challenge the defender to get enough contact to deny you a try. It must come from the coaches wanting to protect the ball with support players but the inside line usually means ruck and reset
Very pleased with that - not sure it constitutes a turning point but good defence (with one horrible lapse for the second try), better discipline (but still some silly penalties), much better attacking intent, solid set piece and great attitude with an insane tackle count from the all of the pack.
A long way to go, as Sale were sub-par, but hope this acts as a pick-me-up for the players as they must have been in a terrible place. Still very little goes through the centres as our attacks were either TdG coming into the line or a counter from deep.
We showed much more attacking intent but do still lack an understanding of how to create space via our centres ...hopefully this come back with Cam and maybe Joseph.
Great step forward but need to reinforce this week on week.

Watson was the same, had an electric outside break cutting back inside usually means you don't have the pace confidence to go round, is that telling? JJ is the same, kicks through now rather than runs round.
For the likes of Muir and McC beating your man in 7's is a prerequisite as is the offload, its sooo refreshing to watch!
When Muir made his break in the second half it failed to end in a try as he lost it forward trying to offload, once his fellow backs realise what he can do they will be aware of that and outcome will be different.

I would not start our internationals. At least part of our problem is the constant chopping and changing combined with the fact (Cam excluded) they're not playing very well.
P G Tips You would leave Watson out after today’s form?
PG
You can work that two ways PG. Would you leave Muir out on Friday's form? or Would you leave TdG out on Friday's form?
I think the point being made is Watson's England form is very different from his Bath form. In fact that could apply to JJ. Faletau, Underhill as well. Even Obano and Stuart at times.
If Friday's players had a good game keep them, its a statement that effort, spirit and application are missing from some players for our club games.
Tyler Offiah

P G Tips You would leave Watson out after today’s form?
PG
Assessment of performance, in any setting, is always context framed
Watson didn't look anywhere as threatening in attack last week
Don't get me wrong, I'm a great Watson fan and would love it if he stayed with us to the end of his playing days but at the moment, for whatever reason he is not beating defenders in teams that are at the very top of the game in the same way he did a year or two ago
P G Tips IMHO, allowing for context I think our 3 most in form back three players are De Glanville, Muir and Watson. I would play De Glanville at Full Back.
R McConnochie, when fit would force his way in- excellent, that gives opportunity for rest/rotation and a class bench option.
Roko would be a good backup and did well last night, but at 33 time is (sadly) running out for him.
Would I move any of them to centre? Perhaps Ruaridh or maybe Gray, but not T deG - let him settle and develop at full back.
As for criticism of Underhill, I do not recall him underperforming for Bath.
PG
Fair analysis PG, re Underhill I'm not saying he underperforms just the at the moment Bayliss and Reid are so outstanding, do they deserve to be dropped?
Of course they will return but would it hurt to make them work for it. Games like Friday are like little casseroles of morale, the longer you leave the ingredients in the same vessel the better the result!
Tyler Offiah
Opinion is based on assumptions, whereas fact is based on observation or research.
I agree with most of that PGT but I struggle with my perception of the relative impact that Underhill and Faletau have made in club games
I deliberately state it as my perception because I fully accept I may be missing something important and obvious to others who know those roles far better than I. However, I rarely come away from a Bath match that they have played in and thought "yep, we are blessed with that class"
The try that Bayliss scored on Friday night was borne out of sheer effort, endeavour, stamina and determination to follow the ball carrier. Had he not been there then a) by the time support arrived the defence would have been in place or b) the scrambled last line would have worked a penalty turnover if our support had not arrived in time
gaz
I made no mention of Faletau -only Underhill and from him I see plenty of effort. Of course when your team are on the back foot much of what you do in the back row is defence, slowing opposition ball and ruck contest. When on the front foot you are more likely to be seen in attack as Josh was. Underhill did score a good try against Wasps you may remember?
Also - no denigration of the work done by our loose forwards recently, but by the time Underhill is fit I think Mercer, Bayliss and Reid may be in need of a rest. In the absence of Ellis and Willliams's stint in the second row they have had to shoulder the burden unrelieved for most (or as in the case of Sale all) of a match.
Apologies - just read the last para of your 20:43 post.
Fair point but I still think we need Underhill’s hard hitting tackling. All 3 of Reid, Bayliss and Mercer were excellent last night, but with all out forward resources stretched, can we rely on the circumstances of a game like that recurring soon?
Great postion to be in thought - to have such backrow depth.
I would leave TdG at FB too, he is more dangerous popping up as the extra player in the line the same way as when Banners played on the wing and popped up at centre. People said play him at centre but he never had the same impact when there all the time, they get marked more easily.
joethefanatic I would not start our internationals. At least part of our problem is the constant chopping and changing combined with the fact (Cam excluded) they're not playing very well.
We’ve got great back 3 resources, but much less so at centre, and sooner or later we need an alternative to JJ, whether that’s to challenge him to get back to his best, or to actually replace him.
For me, it’s as much about the entirety of our back-line as about TdG individually. As for ‘letting him settle and develop’ at full-back, I don’t get that at all. Firstly, full-back is just as difficult in its own way as any other back position; secondly TdG has played across the back line in his rugby life so is clearly adaptable and just a natural talent.
The only part of TdG’s game at full-back that worries me is the robustness of his tackling. At 13 it’s often the tackles you don’t make that are your best defence, and he might be better suited to ‘clever’ defence than last-ditch heroics.
Bailey, Redpath, TdG, Ruaridh, Watson, Muir anyone, with Coka and Gray as bigger units who can slot in for some extra bosh as and when?
hasta It's not a problem we have to deal with for at least 5 weeks. The only thing I'm sure of is that TdG should be our first choice 15.
Probably not a problem we will have at all. A lot of selection in the prem involves seeing who is available and then realising the 23 largely picks itself. The one player I would have straight back in us beno personally.
Tdg certainly deserves a starting point as you say.
Where there are tight calls I hope we go with the player who will be here next season and the younger option who needs game time.
Im not convinced that Watson's performance against Italy tells us much about how he's going to perform for Bath. Clearly Watson is a class act and probably nailed on for Lions, but at the moment I'm happy to go with what's working for Bath. As someone else said (I think) maybe 15s wingers for prem/england have had the risk coached out of them, the 7s guys seem to be more like wingers of old. I thought it was down to defence but maybe not.
Woodpecker Yes PG I’m not even sure he’s been out of form. I heard that the odds on LCD to be first to score were the same as Watson. Something not right there.
I don’t think that’s a reflection on Ant is it - more on modern, formulaic rugby and Eddieball
Say Bath won all the games until the international players were available again, it wouldn’t be right to just bring the internationals back into the starting team.
It’s up to the players available now to make it impossible for the internationals to just get their place back.
Bath Supporter Jack If we actually get the ball to Watson with a yard of space then watch him deliver.
Our problem has been at flyhalf.......
And yet we didn't do too badly with Rhys on the pitch on Friday night
Must admit I'm very baffled
It takes two to score that first try and, if anything, the more difficult skill is the timing and angle of the run. It was beautifully held and given by Priestland, so maybe it’s the support running that has been missing to date?

Going to stick my neck out here and say there is a change. Its alarming but it might actually be Girvan Dempsy.
If you look at the game on the Premiership Rugby site and take the first try as an example watch Muir.
Our line out in the 22, Priestland drops back, Spencer goes on an arc and Muir comes in at first receiver, then recycle Pristland, De Glanville.
It happens latter in the game as well, Priestland drops back and Muir comes into the line from his opposite wing. Only on our ball of course.
On Mercer's break as well when he is tackled its Muir over the ball then Bayliss goes over. It could be that Muir has been told to be a free agent but the common factor is Muir.

Exactly, Opti. I've watched that play 4 or 5 times and each time I come away in appreciation of Priestland's contribution, shaking head and thinking "why has he not done this before?" Hence the bsfflement

And then I think, yeah but some of the best moments of rugby I ever played was actually in two of the Moz matches when we had some brilliant academy level players who made me and my club level passing look top drawer so perhaps it was the timing and line of TdG' coming into the line that made Rp's average pass look a la Ford
It was pure George Ford wasn't it! And, as you say, where has it been? A little bit of everything, I guess. But another of the things that it comes down to is Priestland demanding the ball. Typically, with Ford for example, that move would happen a bit closer to the tryline. After the forwards have hammered a few phases to narrow and short-number the defence, George (Cipriani/Smith) would demand that ball, having used the 'down' time to call the move. Our forwards just continue to hammer away mindlessly until someone knocks on, goes off their feet or gets held up over the line.
What De Glanville showed was the pace to get outside the defence, Muir was involved in the build up to all three tries and his break up the left touch line showed real pace. I'm pretty convinced that is a big part of this. When was the last time our midfield punched a hole and exploited it?
Lets face it Roko 15m out two years ago would scored, Preistland and Matevesi are they quick or do they rely on other assets? (Kicking and power).

Completely agree Opti but again, from my playing experience, it requires more than the 10 jumping up and down screaming for the ball. When at 10 I was always aware that I needed their confidence that something positive was going to happen and when at 9 the flyhalf could shout all he liked but if in my head I'm thinking "oh yeah and cough up the ball and lose 50 metres, no chance pal" then no way hosay is that ball going beyond a metre of the breakdown
Perhaps the TdG scores recently will enable the pack and Spencer to trust our 10 whether Rhys or Tian more often in situations like that
Just watched the highlights - and I'd clearly remembered the RP/TdG try completely differently! In my mind it was from further out and more like a setpiece move.
But in fact, it's precisely what I was saying we don't do - batter a couple of phases, then go wide and let the likes of JJ, TdG, Roko, Ant, Ruaridh go 1v1.
Of course, we had penalty advantage, so the forwards felt able to 'risk' letting it go out. The only other time I recall us doing this was when Redpath played 10. I hope the forwards are watching this video, and thinking 'oh - that was simple, and saved us a whole load of effort'.
Just more to that - it wasn't just bashing it up, it was out to the second pod with Miles Reid and then a quick recycle to Rhys. The quick ball made the difference.
Also I can't be the only one who loves it when Will Muir opens up his legs and shows his class.

The term "balls" was first associated with Coleman in 1957 when he was at BBC Midlands, Sutton Coldfield, presenting a Saturday night 15-minute roundup of the day's football in the Midlands. A technical hitch occurred and there was a black-out, but Coleman could be heard calling out to the technician in the studio, "Trust you to make a balls of that." Coleman's association with these verbal slips is so strong that he is often given erroneous credit for the earliest example specifically referenced as a Colemanballs;[1] in fact the broadcaster responsible was a fellow BBC commentator, Ron Pickering.[4][5] At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Pickering commentated on a race involving the Cuban double-gold medallist Alberto Juantorena, whose muscular build and nine-foot stride contributed to his nickname El Caballo (the horse).[6] Pickering said "and there goes Juantorena down the back straight, opening his legs and showing his class".[4]
Until his retirement, motor racing commentator Murray Walker frequently featured in the column. His excitable delivery led to so many mistakes that they began to be labelled "Murrayisms".[1] Examples include "We've had cars going off left, right and centre", "do my eyes deceive me, or is Senna's Lotus sounding rough?", and "with half of the race gone, there is half of the race still to go".
Anyone else spot that all the Bath team wore a base layer except Reid & Bayliss, whereas only one or two Sale players had one on. On a night when it was reportedly -7 on the pitch.
Watching on Friday I thought when Matevesi went off for a HIA Tian came on at 12 and we had a 2nd play maker and that could be a good blueprint for the rest of this season. RP with a long boot and good place kick while TS distribution passes and line breaks.
I an quite optimistic about Tian Schoeman in combination with Redpath, he clearly likes an open game and takes the ball up to the opposition and commits people, that has to be good for those outside him. From memory he is a decent kicker as well!

Spencer, Tian, Muir, Redpath, McConnochie, Watson, TdG would be a fun backline.
Sure would!

JJ appears to need a career re-boot. He seems like a really lovely bloke, and at this best, as good an outside centre as there is in world rugby. Even at the level he is now, he's still, realistically, miles ahead of any other option we (or most GP teams) have. He's probably still as good or better than Slade, as Slade is currently performing. But there's some sort of spark missing. Maybe a new Club. Or maybe a threat to his place would get his juices flowing? If it's the former I wouldn't begrudge it to him. If it's the latter, then that could be good management? Or maybe he's one of those David Gower/Moeen Ali types - the fact that he makes things look so easy and relaxed belies a more complicated picture?
Watched the highlights on C5 this week as have been unable to face repeats of the games for a few weeks.
Did anyone else notice the saffa 2nd row dive on TDG after he had scored and elbow him in the head. The Try was scored before the dive started so the only reason for it could have been to cause pain or injury, it could easily have led to concussion. This is becoming ever more common and few if any of these collisions would be considered legal in open play and often involve sliding knees 1st into the prone player unable to defend himself.
I would like to see this refereed properly before someone gets injured
34 - Tom Dunn made 34 tackles for @BathRugby against Sale, the joint most by any player in a @premrugby match since Opta have recorded this data (since 2008/09), level with Jacques Burger who made 34 for Saracens against Exeter in 2013. Done.

Don't agree with this at all, hasn't been anywhere near that level for Bath for 5 years and there are plenty of 13s in the Prem who I think would offer more in a salary capped world IMO. Slade is significantly ahead in terms of what his overall play offers Exeter IMO. As for world rugby Semi Radradra and Virimi Vakatawa (for example) are light years ahead.

34 - Tom Dunn made 34 tackles for @BathRugby against Sale, the joint most by any player in a @premrugby match since Opta have recorded this data (since 2008/09), level with Jacques Burger who made 34 for Saracens against Exeter in 2013. Done.

Optimist He seems like a really lovely bloke, and at this best, as good an outside centre as there is in world rugby. Even at the level he is now, he's still, realistically, miles ahead of any other option we (or most GP teams) have. He's probably still as good or better than Slade, as Slade is currently performing.
I agree and disagree with both of you. Defensively JJ is better than Slade and up there with anyone at 13. Slade’s kicking game may be better but that won’t win you games and his poor defence has conceded tries. attacking wise they are on a par in the England game plan when Ford plays neither plays well with Farrell or a bosh merchant at 12.
I think we don’t see the best of JJ at Bath because we have been playing a forwards based game plan and he must get as bored as the rest of us watching endless pick and drives. If Bath could find a way to reconnect the forwards to the backs as we saw glimpses at the end of last season then they will get more for their investment.i
TG Kesmo I agree and disagree with both of you. Defensively JJ is better than Slade and up there with anyone at 13.
I think that this is hanging onto past performances - JJ has been like a revolving door recently, particularly this season*. The number of clean line breaks through the midfield and tries conceded prove that. Not sure if that is skill or current level of interest from him.

[*clearly not all his fault mind you]
Glad you modified that None of our mid field defence covered themselves in glory especially against Bristol. I think JJs last game was not great but that would possibly be due to off field issues. Hopefully Hooper and the coaching team have dealt with this or he shouldn’t play.

Well let's hope he wants to confound his critics on Friday and the team help him to!

I think that we would all love nothing more than that. Based on the other thread I treated myself to the highlights of the Bath vs Tigers semi. He was brilliant that day, partly because he was surrounded by some many threats (Ford, Eastond, Roko, Banners etc) that gave him some space. I am hoping that Tian, Muir etc. do the same and he can be somewhere close to JJ 2015 as a result.
