TEAMS UP! A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB: EXETER CHIEFS v BATH

Ewels: leadrership

By PG Tips
November 25 2020

Bath have developed a distressing habit of losing season openers they are expected to win. How is that relevant to their next game? In the quality of opposition. Having slumped below acceptable standard against the relegation favourites they must next scale the heights against the Premiership champions and favourites. Last year, following embarrassing humiliation at Bristol, Bath hosted Exeter and won. Can they repeat the trick this week without home advantage?

Last season’s win was based on grit, guts, discipline and in no small measure, the sodden weather which dictated a simple, no-risk game plan. Next Saturday’s forecast is cloudy but dry with a light breeze and the match is to be played in an empty stadium. Without the urgings of a baying crowd a never-say-die attitude, while welcome, will not in itself be enough. The Autumn Nations Cup will impact both clubs, Exeter losing Francis, Cowan-Dickie, Hill, and Slade on top of injury to Vermeulen and Nowell. Bath, without Stuart,  Underhill, Faletau, Joseph and Watson are likely to feel the losses more, especially as the cancellation of Scotland -Fiji has handed Exeter a bonus in the return of  Gray, Hidalgo-Clyne and Hogg. Exeter, with their direct and smothering game plan, ability to build relentless pressure and strength in depth, seem better able to shrug off the absence of international stars than Bath. Certainly few deputies in Blue, Black and White enhanced their reputations against Newcastle last weekend.

As always, expect Exeter’s principal strength and threat to be up front, especially from a hard driving back row. They have become so adept at the keep ball game of forward drive and pick and go in the opposition 22 that they seem an unstoppable juggernaut. Their steamroller progress is hard to stop legally and frequently earns them penalties and yellow cards for the opposition. The legality of Chiefs’ own play at these phases merits close scrutiny: players frequently go off their feet and seal off, obstruct ahead of the ruck and come in from the side. Bath, needing iron discipline of their own, will hope for a zero tolerance approach from the officials.

The Devonians’ threat is not confined to the pack of course. Maunder (or Hidalgo-Clyne) and Simmonds can be relied upon to keep up a high tempo and fluency in attack. In Devoto, Whitten, Woodburn and O’Flaherty they possess a healthy mix of directness and trickery, while Hogg, a favourite for the Lions’ full back berth, has the skills to win a match on his own.

If it is true, as Dean Richards implied, that Bath “underestimated” Falcons, they are unlikely to make the same mistake with Exeter. They should not though be in awe of them, but take the battle to them in every phase, in every way, on every part of the pitch as they did in October last year. To do that, after a disappointing outing last week is a tall order, but last week’s side should be itching to restore their reputations, especially the forwards who led the late season surge to the 2020 playoffs. The question then for Hatley and Hooper is how many changes to make? Surely Dunn and Ewels must start for their leadership qualities and I believe the physicality and experience of Ellis and Stooke will be needed to match Exeter’s forward intensity. Behind the scrum the only change I would make would be Rokodoguni (who looked hungry against Falcons and has found Sandy Park a happy hunting ground before) for Cokanasiga. Hopefully when Big Joe does enter the fray from the bench he will be snorting to use his power and pace to effect.

Last season’s home triumph over Chiefs came after an almighty rocket to the squad from Stuart Hooper at the end of the Ashton Gate debacle. Both he and Hatley had faces like thunder at half time last week, and Hoops used the word “unacceptable” in describing the performance afterwards. We can be certain that his and Hats’ displeasure will have been firmly stated before this week’s preparations began.

While a naïve desire to run the ball at every opportunity risks handing the initiative to the hosts, the two tries against Newcastle last weekend were positive signs – so too the variation in exit strategy using running and passing to progress from the 22 as an alternative to box kick. Such is Exeter’s grip on possession and aggression in defence that scoring chances will be few and far between. Counter attack may be one of the few ways to catch them off guard. Hopefully turnover ball and clever back three positioning and running lines will be a key focus in training this week. McConnochie, Rokodoguni and Spencer are all sharp on the counter, so too de Glanville if he can regain the confidence dented by Falcons. Mercer, Reid, Dunn and Ewels must stand up to the Chiefs’ bullying and lead the charge to deny them go forward and steal possession.

It is not a question of attack for its’ own sake, but the awareness and will to exploit a momentary opportunity that could improve Bath’s performance immensely. First though the foundations have to be right and the looseness of last week eradicated. That means forwards contesting every winnable ball, backs cutting out the high, looped passes, paying much closer heed to discipline and outside backs avoiding the touchline trap. Above all, this has to be a full on performance from the entire 23 and support staff. Players may miss the spur of a supportive crowd, but Exeter bring their own emotional energy, which Bath must match.

With another away match to follow, albeit a winnable one at Worcester, before the European Champions Cup, Bath must put on a performance and take as many points as they can from the tie to recharge their season. The mountain may be steep, and guarded by the fiercest warriors in the west, but summits are there to be reached and favourites to be unseated, as Newcastle demonstrated last Saturday. A win, however unlikely, would transform bath’s fortunes with the season barely begun. They must strive to reach a peak this Saturday.

Possible Teams:

Bath: Obano, Dunn, Judge, Ewels (Capt.), Stooke, Ellis, Reid, Mercer. Spencer, Priestland. McConnochie, Matavesi, Redpath, Rokodoguni. De Glanville.

Replacements: Schoeman, Batty, Thomas, McNally, Bayliss. Chudley, Clark, Cokanasiga.

Exeter: Hepburn, Yeandle (Capt.), Williams, Witty, Armand, Ewers, Kirsten, Simmonds. Maunder, Simmonds. Woodburn, Devoto, Whitten, O’Flaherty. Hogg.

Replacements: Innard, Moon, Street, Gray, Capstick. Hidalgo-Clyne, Skinner, Cordero.

Yes England have retained a 25-player squad for this weekend’s game, Luke Cowan-Dickie being one, Dunn not being one:

BACKS
Jonathan Joseph (Bath Rugby, 53 caps)
Henry Slade (Exeter Chiefs, 32 caps)
Anthony Watson (Bath Rugby, 44 caps)

FORWARDS
Luke Cowan-Dickie (Exeter Chiefs, 24 caps)
Jonny Hill (Exeter Chiefs, 2 caps)
Will Stuart (Bath Rugby, 6 caps)
Sam Underhill (Bath Rugby, 20 caps)

On the WRU site it says: Wales are hopeful No 8 Taulupe Faletau will also be available to face England after recovering from a slight knee injury.

Even on paper we'd lose.

Most weeks we look stronger on paper, then mostly under perform and struggle. This is one of those weeks when we don't even look stronger on paper so the sensible approach is to avoid watching.

Woohoo 10th time lucky on the page refresh...as posted on the other thread:

Stooke on the bench, no Ellis at all is a big miss (or mistake if Ellis is fit IMO). John M and Cam R again which didn't work last week. None of these are ideal IMO.

I'm generally an optimist when it comes to Bath Rugby but I think that we will be kerbstomped (again). The bookies have Exe by 17 so tend to agree...

Hmm - same backline as last weekend I am a bit disappointed that Roko isn't starting - let's hope we have we learnt our lessons - good thing for me is I am personally not expecting anything out of this game on the flip side as a Bath supporter for so many years that in itself I personally think is sad - other than seeing some passion return to our club.

Interesting that Chiefs are effectively playing with 5 back rows - 4 of which have been capped at international level in the back row - the odd one out being Kirsten and from what I have seen of him had he stayed in South Africa he would probably have been.

Referee Christophe Ridley - positives are it is not Maxwell-Keys, Tempest or Foley.

TBF JC4 did score a try, which is pretty much the definition of a wingers job. The rest of his game was not great, true, but he's 10 years younger than Roko.

For the avoidance of doubt, Roko would be the second name on the team sheet for me closely following RMc. I think it's saying something when our wingers are the dominant "attitude" players in our side.

... IMHO, of course.

Roko hasn’t been effective for a couple of years. He’s a shadow of his former self. He can still break through a few tackles but he doesn’t have the pace to finish any longer. He still has the power & skill set but we need him to score tries & it just isn’t happening.

His pace is not what it was, true but, his step is a thing of rare beauty (and is still intact) and he is an absolute beast in defence. But it's his attitude that is faultless and contagious and that's what we need at the moment. We've got good players, they're just not playing with conviction.

... IMHO, of course.

He was a total liability and probably cost us the game through his many, many errors, but he needs game-time so they stick with him. Probably the right choice.

O'Flaherty will make Joe look like a donkey with his legs tied together and will pass him and turn him inside out at will. At least if we had Roko, he might of slowed him down with a big tackle or two.

Also no Ellis is a big mistake, Is he hurt? Ellis is one of our forwards who has real doggedness like Dunner. Just what you need to beat a rampant, confident, top form pack, you need guys who can go toe to toe.

Exeter by at least 20-25, probably much more.

I played rugby for a while, but switched to football early on unfortunately wasn't good enough and had to settle for semi pro level. Only ever played for teams that were title challengers (hence my frustration with Bath) and did transfer mid season a few times when a better trophy option presented itself hence a pretty full trophy cabinet. Watch very little football now as the game has gone soft.

Played a number of other sports and now concentrate on golf, but whatever sport I do it's just with one simple aim... Winning.

Why do you ask?

No set piece, no discipline, no possession, no territory.
That was terrible. I know Exeter are good, but we let them be good, and they actually fluffed a few chances.
We desperately need wins over Worcester any LI in our next two league games, our confidence must be shot, and without wins in those games the momentum will be towards fighting off relegation.

Any chance of telling us mere mortals and the coaches and the squad what they have to do to get it right and how to beat the European and English champions? Might be more interesting than your repetitive same old mantra?

Newcastle are European and English champions?

I never expected us to beat Exeter, they’re obviously light years ahead of us. Any sort of performance that didn’t involve waving a white flag would have been nice though.

But keep making excuses, as we underperform once again.

So nothing constructive to suggest of how improvements can be instituted, as usual just arm chair repetitive negativity. Thought so! Boring!

I (thankfully) only was able to have 1 eye on the game tonight, but some things to start off with.

- Dont lose possession after 1 pass over and over and over again, week after week FFS.
- Don’t give away 16 penalties against a side who are famous for scoring from them
- ATTEMPT competing against box kicks for the first time in a year
- Try mixing up kick offs instead of the exact same place every single time
- When you’re 30+ points down, don’t kick the ball away when you’re literally on the half way line ffs.

Didn't see the game and I’m not enticed to watch the replay but did anything positive come from it ? Maybe our 3 points came from a pen at the end of a 40m rolling maul or a scintillating backs move.

All very well saying Don’t do this etc but how do you get the players in the mind set not to make these mistakes. Perhaps your fantastic insight would be better used by emailing Hoops and the other coaches as to where our players are going wrong as they need your help! I really think this is key, no-one minds criticism if the games is bad, even if it does apply to coaches, systems or individuals. If its fair comment then fine.
Its when it is repeated with the poster seeming to relish the criticism that simply makes people turn off.

Its not just BO there are and have been others, if they were guests we would ask them to tone it down but these posters are Bath followers, I won't say supporters.
After bad games I sometimes don't post in response because I know I might break the board guidelines in response to repeated provocative comments.

I feel sometimes I'm being personally goaded. I know we are not serial trophy winners but I just enjoy the wins when they come together with the hope that I see decent rugby sometimes. Thats what supporters do isn't it?

I usually avoid posting on match day as I do actually care about results and apparently I am incredibly moody when we lose and may not make a reasoned response. The other Reason I don’t is because it the same old stuff on here. I like to give opposite opinions a chance but the constant negativity even before the game is too much. It makes it very difficult to continue ... not with supporting Bath but with visiting this site.

The issue for me is that, unlike Sarries and Exe (for example) there is a huge drop off between our first 15 / 23 and the squad. Many of the wider squad appear to never get a game so won't improve - Vaughan, Max Green, Max Wright, Darren Atkins which is the total opposite of the most successful teams. Then add some selection oddities (for me at least), 12 and 13, Henry T, Stooke and Ellis for example. I think that the team balance is wrong at the moment.

None of the above would have made Bath win at Sandy Park but could make a difference in the next 2 games, which are huge.

Come on SW - that ‘B team’ line just doesn’t wash. No one is expressing surprise at the result, nor even really the size or manner of it. Our B team included at least 10 players who could easily be named in our strongest XV - albeit not in the form they are currently showing. The league table reflects the strength of each club’s top 30 players, not their top 15. We don’t lack quality of player, we lack quality of inspirational leadership.

Probably right Opti but what if your inspirational leaders are not there.

Exeter won the Premiership title and European Champions cup, you don't go into a game like that missing 5 internationals. Where is the core of quality players in that team yesterday. Those that were quality are frankly too old now. The squad lacks the same depth as Exeter. Our current method of winning based on last season is by scoring tries from a dominant pack. That doesn't exist at the moment.

Firstly, I skim passed BO's posts - none of them add anything to the discussions.

Don't suppose any of us expected Bath to win 'even on a good day' but being thrashed to a virtually nil result is pathetic.

Secondly, Andrew Sheridan should be ashamed of himself - far too within his comfort zone of old mates with Craig (wasn't he at school with him); how exactly is it worth listening to if he just lets Hooper get away with his platitudes and not even push him on exactly what he is doing to produce such an abysmal display of Premiership level rugby? Game plan - don't make me laugh.

We need to galvanise, yet again Bath FC supporters are turning on each other because of the teams performances.

Whilst I accept we all have differing views about why our club year after year capitulates at the start of a season and why some of our coaches make strange choices/decisions in our view.. We need to realise instead of turning on each other quite viciously in some cases that actually we all want the same thing a successful Bath FC.

I applaud the people who defend the personnel week in week out when the evidence on the pitch lends itself to the more negative posts but there is retribution when the team pulls out a fine victory and some equally nasty coments are made.

Personally I just want us to show signs of knowing where we are going. I do not believe that coaches/DoRs or players deliberately fail - but also I note that we are for whatever reason guilty of not learning our lessons and personally I get the feeling something is not right in the group at the moment - the last 2 performances have been absolutely abject, devoid of ideas and basic skills, our defence has at times been like a rusty bucket, some of the players look slow and out of condition and the worst for me by far is I am not seeing the passion - The passion for playing for our great club - just not there... Now that is worrying and not always easy to fix.

I would end by reiterating we are passionate Bath FC supporters and we all want the same thing at the end of the day.

Thats the point we didn't. We are matching Priestland and Matevesi (33 and 30) against Simmonds and Devoto (23 and 26).

Exeter scored 5 tries last week 6 this and they are going to do the same next week and run away with it his year.

If we are going to criticise the club its not sorting the backs especially 10.

I'm not sure yesterday counts, if we are the same against Worcester Warriors then we have a problem.

Yesterday counts. Playing a good side is no excuse for a complete lack of basic skills. We genuinely struggled to string two passes together without coughing up the ball. Really think you need to open your eyes a bit. We offered absolutely nothing, for the second week in a row.

And again, Exeter were missing plenty too.

Ali points well made.

People have their views of what is right and what isn't and maybe they are correct.

What I do know is how frustrating it is to watch two poor performances on the back of a cracking second half of last season. Spencer played out of his skin and the team performed well. He has been slower out of the blocks this season and I believe that has affected the team performances but he is still a top player and if he and a few others can gain some form then things will improve. I personally thought we had turned a corner last season...I do hope that is the case.

Get real SW. There is no way that match up excuses a 6 try to nil thrashing and anyway Rhys is currently our starting 10. In the pack I reckon only Underhill would have been an unarguable starter from the absentees

Just accepting Exeter's superiority and waiting for the messiah of a 10 to arrive won't bridge the gap between where we are now and where we need to be to get into a premiership final

Gaz, all these comments may well be correct but sticking Dunn and Obano back in a depleted side and then damning the Clubs performance is artificial.

I have long been critical of the vacant 10 policy, it took us ages to fill the 9 slot. When we did we were a different side behind a strong pack. Thats not there now.
Underhill, Stuart and Faletau are significant upgrades.

We don't have an alternative to 10 man rugby. I'm critical of that as we are wasting talent at 11, 13, 14, 15.
I'm concerned about Matevesi as I think he is at 12 to protect Redpath. Wrong decision in my view, put CR in at 12.
There is NO alternative to Priestland so no plan B.

My suggestion would be judge the team on last season's pack winning ball to develop the Redpath, TdG, Bailey talent with JJ Watson RMc in support.

Hooper does need a proper backs coach that clear GD isn't working, if he isn't strong enough to stand up and say "this is how the backs will play Hoops I'll leave young Mark to sort the forwards" then he should be replaced.
How can a backs coach have any credibility when he doesn't even demand two fly halves to work with?
Wouldn't a proper backs coach say, give me the tools to develop or I'm off.

Problem is you just can't say that until you have seen our best 15 players on the pitch. This is my point.

The likes of Steenson and Gopperth show that it’s still possible to play a few metres in your head on a rugby pitch, and to act as navigator for a younger, second playmaker.

It feels as though RP is the one who needs a second playmaker who can vary our plays more than a second playmaker needs him. RP’s ball-striking is a beautiful thing, and we need that weapon. But when ’it’s on’ it feels like his passes are too easy to read, because whoever gets the ball just gets enveloped.

It’s no good saying we’re only 2 games in. There’s no excuse for not hitting our straps. Shares in Hoops are well down.

Pretty surprising if you saw the Bath front row putting the squeeze on most of the other teams post lockdown with the result that all 3 got called into the England camp. The most obvious point in relation to the last 2 games is that unfortunately Thomas is nowhere near the ability of Stuart these days, either in the scrum or in the loose.

TBF BathMatt I thought Beno got stuffed out of sight by Harry Williams especially for the first pushover try - Beno was doubled up and the back five behind him appeared to buckle suggesting the pressure was coming through Beno - it happens sometimes and you right our front row would be steadier with Will Stuart albeit towards the end of last season officials appeared to be taking issue with something he was doing and he was starting to rack up the penalties against him.

As for rewarding players for their performances - I don't believe England and Eddie Jones sit high on that ladder and perhaps not the best performance indicator given how few Exeter Players have been rewarded for their performances and you could add Sale, Wasps and Bristol to that discussion as well.

Very true bathmat, although I'm hoping that given the time he's been out he's somehow able to get back to something like the player he was. Physically and mentally, given the pressure a prop's body is under, coming back from his injuries is a massive ask, will take time and I admire him for wanting to put his body on the line yet again. Also, I've seen numerous matches where a scrum on top one week, with the same players, will struggle against a scrum it would expect to get on top of the next. Will Stuart wins Bath lots of pens, but without looking at stats, I'm sure he gets pinged quite a bit too? I suppose I'm trying to say that it's, well, a bit of a lottery with lots of factors at work and I saw matches where our 'reserve front row' got the better of things.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Hooper doesn't really like 'characters'?

I think McNally has been brilliant for us in lots of ways, and gives it his all every time. But then again, for a couple of years Stooke was an absolute stand-out. I know which one would be more likely to end up upside down in a wheelie-bin on a night out, but I also know who i'd be picking for this w/e with a brief to lively things up a bit.

Burns was sidelined. Zach might be back in the fold for the moment, but something went against him towards the end of last season. Banahan went. Henry Thomas is getting a lot of chances for someone whose credit is about 3 years old. RP is so heavily favoured that we haven't even bothered recruiting a back-up.

Is Hooper's 'born with a side-parting' personality a bit incompatible with some of the more maverick members of the squad? Surely the real skill in management is getting the best from the non-conformists?

Agree, but more on the side - parting , do we know which side ?
Some ‘Research’ has found the way a person parts their hair is related to many subconscious associations when assessed by others.
So, someone who parts their hair on the left activates a subconscious response from others that comes from the left hemisphere of their brains.
Since the left part of the brain rules logic, analysis and linear thought, someone who parts their hair on the left side will be seen as someone who is logical, organised and exuding confidence.
Because of the way they are treated by others these people may develop a take-charge attitude!
A left side hair part is also associated with masculinity.
Part your hair on the right you are considered more fun-loving and reliable .
Centre parting or bald ? Balanced, grounded and neutral. So who’s what ?

Apologies, I was bored !! (Sm128)
