Nobody can say this season hasn’t been different and if you are Blue, Black and White fan you have will have realised that’s its pretty good to be supporting Bath right now with five wins from six since restart and an emerging style that’s brought a smile.
Sitting fifth in the table with sixth now a distant thirteen points behind, three matches to go and only four points separating second from fifth perhaps a real chance of getting into the top four and qualifying for the semi-finals? It’s a fair few years ago we could say that, even the most hard-bitten pundits have started to notice.
Just the small matter of winning the last three matches then, starting with a trip to Sale on Sunday. If the last three results with our friends from the north are anything to go by it will be close. With a win a piece and a draw, all settled by three points or less in what can only be described as a hard-fought tussle or one for the purists.
Not surprising they have been close, with both teams fielding physical front fives, poaching back rows and very capable at the set piece. With what’s at stake expect both teams to field their strongest teams with high quality match ups across the park, expect the battles between the England flankers Curry & Underhill and scrum halves De Klerk & Spencer to be key. Bath will need to be wary of Sale’s bulldozing centres and expect Sale to try to negate Bath’s edge in kicking for territory. All in all, if both teams live up to their potential it will be close
Just for once this game appears to be being played in the decent weather rather than the depths of winter so let’s keep our fingers crossed that the backs will get the ball in hand rather than over their heads and if the game is close, it’s high scoring as quite frankly this fixture owes the fans some tries.
A tough ask for Bath to win as Sale must be the favourites but what is important to remember a losing bonus point could make all the difference if Bristol can help us out and beat our nearest rivals in the table Wasps.
One question for the Blue, Black and White supporters, are you buying into the Hoops era yet?

what kind of 20-0? bonus point try kind of 20-0?

Thanks Mr Friv for the preview- good stuff!
Like the freudian slip in your post NiD - would that be Castle Lager or Lion?

From memory, the 20-0 is counted as 4 unconverted tries.

Do we have to nominate someone to miss the kicks for the player stats?

Interesting observation regarding the Saracens Exeter game and team selection.
It appears on paper that both sides have chosen very much understrength teams.
Is that coincidence, spying on each other or perhaps some exchange of information between coaches? Or just pragmatic selection regarding each other's position in the table?

I think Sale have looked better with Sam James in the centre. Is there also no cover for McGinty from them?

Is Watson injured or just not picked?

Could be a very attritional match with a preponderance of power players on both sides. Sale certainly have some top performers considering they are apparently missing a few. Presumably home advantage doesnt make much difference nowadays but we will have to be canny in all departments to come out on top.

Expect them to put bombs on TdG and GHW. This will be tough. COYB

So I am confused, according to Sale website Faf de Klerk has been selected in the last 6 match XXIII's but did not get onto the pitch in one game. Does that mean he was selected according to the welfare rules or not?

You are probably right. I think these 'rules' were designed to be fudged.

Yes - I think they were. But, it would also be absolute nonsense to have to exclude a player on the basis of sitting in the bench for the full 80.

I have been openly critical when I have felt they deserved it but that was an incredible performance and result by Bath. It feels like we are building in a way I havent felt since 2015. Whatever happens next this season, we have come out of lockdown a new team and the boys should all be proud.
A week off now then back to it!

Still trying to believe that we actually won a game up at Sale. Fantastic result. We normally can rely on the game being played on a wet and dismal Friday night with us getting 'nul points'. Don't want to single out one player but cannot stop looking beyond Ben Spencer for the huge difference that he is making. Onwards and upwards!!

Anyone know what happened at the final whistle with the pushing and shoving? My guess (with little evidence) was that one of their lads (Ross?) said something to Redpath, Id imagine about leaving Sale to chase the cash, or somesuch. Nice to see Dunn pile in with Redpath! Might be completely wrong on all of that but Redpath did his talking on the pitch. He was immense for 20 minutes, with some big hits, a couple of turnovers and a monster kick or two.
Quote:hasta
Hadn't Dunn been subbed at the point?

We have got a recent habit of being a bit sleepy for the 1st 15 minutes of a game. Were recovering well which is brilliant. Im sure SH would like us firing from the off though.

Get the ball back. Pass directly into touch.
Then concede another penalty.

Yes he had, came on after the whistle and went to congratulate the rest of the team but piled in in support of Redpath

Blimey Opti - just watched the last 5 minutes of Force v Rebels. 100% pick and go - Rebels didn't fling it wide once. Exciting yes - a place in the finals begging. Winning rugby yes. Entertaining rugby , no.

Watched that McC try again and I think defenders are going to have to learn to stop going high on him to tackle him. Both James and Tuilagi get bumped off with some ease.

Interesting point, opti, and as a former back I agree that the game wasn't 100 minutes of poetry (barely 10 minutes for that matter), especially for a neutral. But I think that's why, in a nutshell, for me, rugby is still so fascinating and why I find a 12-6 almost but not quite preferable to a 39-33.
Despite efforts being made to turn rugby into a fast-paced, open game that appeals to neutrals and new comers, there are still a host of ways to win a game and one very popular one doesn't involve risk and adventure. It involves a focus on defence and set piece, kicking from 9 and 10 and consistent if not game changing attack. As we all know, in the Prem, over the last decade, Exeter and Saracens have shown that it works. Sure, they bolted on very effective attacking games but they won leagues doing the basics. I like how Bath are quite clearly trying to do the same.
Now the problem is that a new comer to the sport will turn on the TV, not understand that Bath are trying to 'do an Exeter' and are a few years away from being an all-singing-all-dancing team and perhaps switch off. I get that and I think rules and improvements have been made to get us to a point where the 'product' is just about good enough for the new comer. But selfishly, as someone who watches a lot and knows a little about rugby, I'm fascinated by even the bad games, as there's always something of interest, a sub plot, a plan etc.
It's why I also don't buy the argument that players must 'love playing for Bristol' (or Northampton earlier in the season) because they throw it about. Professional rugby players love winning. End of. Even wingers who get cold stood out on the touchline chasing box kicks all day, would rather do it for a team that wins 3-0. If your wingers don't, you need new wingers. So whilst it's great to watch what Bristol are trying to do and it might (might...) work one day, I don't think in this league it will work consistently enough to win multiple titles (like Leicester, Sarries, Exe).
Hence, whilst it pains me a bit to watch a boring game of rugby, as long as I can see why a team is trying to do what they're trying to do i.e. Bath, Hooper, and Hatley are focusing on basics
and winning, I am hooked.

I don't normally do this, but i visited the Sale forum to read the fans view of the game, most seem to think they lost the game at the line-out and heavy criticism of their hooker. Many being realistic and saying the loss was down to there own misgivings. Also several blaming their captain Jonno Ross for making the wrong decisions and getting the wrong side of the ref with his constant questioning of his decisions. It seems this happens often with J Ross and referees . Some blame Will Stuart for so called indiscretions at scrum time. Overall a philosophical view from many but of course the usual few blaming the ref. and saying Bath did not do anything special but won the game on the back of Sale mistakes. Happy Days !

From my angle the greatest asset Hoops and Hats have instilled over the Covid lockdown is the bonhomie. All the players are a happy bunch and enjoying life. As I have said before a good team spirit (Players and Coaches) make for a winning combination. Onwards and upwards.

I still don't think we deserve to win the comp. our back play is too ragged. we need some more assets in the centres- clark and wright aren't good enough. maybe, with jj likely to head off for internationals it might be time to give ojomoh and will butt a run?

One of the good things is that Chudley, in terms of style, is very much a Spencer like-for-like
Quote:Bath Supporter Jack
I acknowledge RP has been very good...................at what he does. He has in fact been better at what he does than normal.
Its just that we need more if we are to develop a Plan B as well as the currently very successful Plan A
Quote:Bathovalballer
So what is Mr Dempsey doing or adding to the party? Yes RP has been very good (at goal kicking and libs kicking) but not so much in getting the line moving. Spencer with his miss passes has added much more, and makes RP look good. Without Mr S I wonder if we would be in the position we are now. Not that I am decrying it, just want to see more flowing backs moves from a talented group of individuals.
Quote:Bath Supporter Jack
To be fair to Mr Dempsey..................we now have a set piece that is 95% certain of winning line out ball and very likely to win controlled quality scrum ball.....................we also have a scrumhalf who gets on with it.
The effect of this is that RP and the backs have an extra "second"....................that is really important!

Id say thats precisely the opposite of being fair to Mr Dempsey. All of what you evidence makes him look even worse. If you cant produce coherent attacking backs play from that set of advantages then its hard to imagine you ever will.
Quote:gaz59
Well Freddie in his recent interview would seem to disagree. He says Dempsey is a good coach with great ideas but is constrained by Hooper and Hatley.
That may be a myopic perception...

Maybe that's our attack strategy, more opportunistic than rehearsed?

Bit harsh Gaz, McConnochie try looks like an attack play developed over several phases with good line out ball, strong line out drive, a couple of mid-field set ups (slightly aimlessly), we go wide to Hamer Webb via Priestland and Matavesi, come back infield via Priestland to create space on both sides and then make a line break down the left via TdG to McConnochie with a dummy line from Joseph.
Priestland doesn't seem to be involved in the last phase as he has gone to the other side of the ruck to make it look like we are going right. This looks like a really good team try with lots of phases and different skill sets. They have been rare but we should acknowledge them when they happen.
Don't get me wrong, our attacking play for most of the season has been awful but it only seems fair to say that it is now improving.
Quote:Optimist
Gaz: 'He says Dempsey is a good coach with great ideas but is constrained by Hooper and Hatley' - I didn't read/hear that, but that sounds pretty credible.
NID: 'I think back development was de-prioritised' - that also sounds like a reasonable interpretation (and possibly a reasonable approach).
Gaz: 'Maybe that's our attack strategy, more opportunistic than rehearsed?' .... also agree that this is probably true - our aggressive defence has 'created' a lot of opportunities.
With Hooper's authority at an all-time high, it's fair to say that his approach has been vindicated, and so I do feel as though we can expect to see more attacking options layered on in the coming months.

Don't know what game you were watching NID, because Ballsout keeps telling us all that Bath drop the ball or get turned over after one phase, and haven't strung two phases together for years.

there is probably a spectrum of ways tries are created.
i) Pack thudding forward in a very limited way
ii) Opportunistic turn overs
iii) Several phases of play designed to create space in a good attacking part of the pitch for key players to capitalise on
iv) Rehearsed first phase move
I think we are mostly using 1&2 but starting to see 3. 4
