Former New Zealand Under 21 hooker Joe Ross has joined Saracens from first division club Worcester. This is the fourth close-season signing for the Men in Black. The 26 year old comes to the club on a three year deal and will begin training with his new colleagues on 15 July. The front rower has already gained experience in English rugby first with Bedford Blues, then with Worcester.

And the 5'11 16st 7lbs man is very much looking forward to joining fellow Kiwi Wayne Shelford at the club, along with Sarries' superstars Tim Horan, Kyran Bracken, Richard Hill, Thomas Castaignede and Christian Califano.

Crucially, Ross has EU eligibility through his English wife and therefore will not take up the overseas player slot vacated by the retirement of Jannie De Beer.

Spaeking about the move Ross said "I believe that I’m hard working and good in the set phases and a solid scrummager. I really want to get involved with Sarries, play well and stay as long as possible. Getting into the starting lineup is a personal goal of mine."

Saracens CEO Peter Deakin said of the new acquisition "He’s a big tough guy, just what we need in the tight and around the park. I’m certain that he will be an important team member and I’m looking forward to seeing him develop all his skills with us and becoming a Saracen through and through".

With another hooker joining the front-row ranks, the obvious questions now must be asked about the futures of Matt Cairns, Robbie Russell and James Parkes. With this increased competition for the no2 shirt, one or perhaps two of the three players that have been jostling for the hooker berth over the past couple of seasons could well be bidding the club adieu.
