The IRB-backed SOS Romania Rugby appeal has been given the go-ahead to expand its activities in eastern Europe. Schools and clubs in three new countries - Bulgaria, Georgia and Moldova - will be the latest beneficiaries of the scheme started by Sarries fan John Broadfoot. The expansion comes at the end of a successful year-long trail during which nearly 2,000 shirts and 800 pairs of boots were collected from schools, clubs and individuals around the UK. John Broadfoot was full of praise for all involved.

"I am delighted that the IRB have had the vision and courage to back SOS and it gives the IRB a chance to be very directly involved with the development of the real grass roots end of the game - the players of tomorrow coming from emerging rugby nations who hopefully one day soon will be major players in the global game of rugby" he said.

The appeal will look to go from strength to strength in 2003 and it now has the endorsement of London Wasps' Wales and Lions scrum half Robert Howley to add to other famous names who have given their backing such as Jonny Wilkinson, Martin Johnson and Danny Grewcock.
