Newcastle vs Tigers Match Report

So, my first game of the season and my first ever visit to Kingston Park. Many thanks to our friends on the Falcons board for the suggestion of the Twin Farms for parking and dining. Having suffered from sunburn on Saturday, our friends in the North East also helped out by ensuring there would be no further sunburn.
When we arrived at the pub it was 10 degrees, when we left, a short
while later it was 5 degrees and raining. The highlight of the pub,
surpassing the excellent food and beer was meeting Mally and Pod, the
former of whom I have been acquainted with through these august message
boards for over 10 years.
A brief walk to the ground, and then wait for the doors to open, two Woods coaches pull up and the wonderful Paul Officeboy’s greeting. Not a day for cold beer, we wonder to our places in the South stand, thankfully covered. I don’t want to be rude to our hosts but the stadium makes you appreciate Welford Road even more, despite the fact I’ve not been there this season.
Toby’s first few kicks in the warm up sail wide of the posts, so I decide to text this fact to TJS10, Toby nails the next 4.
Golding and Hayman were withdrawn from the match day squad before kick off as expected and it didn’t take Mystic Meg to predict that there would be an adverse impact on the scrum for Newcastle.
Alex was also out for us his place taken by Johne with Lucas on the bench and Robbie Harris replacing Boris on the bench.
The teams are read out and Toby and Geoff get some mild boos but nothing compared to those that greet the announcement of Thompson at Hooker, alluded to as “Daddy’s little princess” by some next to me.
Toby kicked off right, Smith tackling the catcher a second ahead of Mad Eye, immediately Newcastle were under pressure at the breakdown, although they got the ball it was all on the back foot.
My spirits sank though as we started by kicking away possession and not kicking well, too far, no chasers. Newcastle grafted but to little avail. A penalty to Newcastle, was missed by the Blood replacement for Gopperth. Talking of whom nearly every ball Gopperth touched, he kicked. A question, why do Falcons bother with attacking Centres? We then repaid the kick with a miss from Toby.
The first couple of Newcastle scrums gave heart in that they were severely underpressure and Mr White didn’t intervene. first scrum saw a rock solid ball but the Falcons 9 scragged Ben who, not for the only time, seemed to be thinking one phase ahead before the ball was secured.
20 minutes up and the teeth beginning to be ground, Ben Youngs knocked on in a promising position to give Newcastle a scrum, it was all a subtle ploy, Tigers pushed them off the ball and then bundled Lewis up to and over the line. Flood adds the extras. The game restarts and 2 minutes later, Johne goes over in the Left but just a bit too far out for Flood to add the conversion. Another 4 minutes and Toby waltzes through to score our 4th and converts it. and another 4 minutes, Moody grabs his second when a Falcons players looks to be pulled aside expanding a Marcos sized hole on the 22, Marcos goes straight and unloads to Mad Eye who seems to take a couple of bounces to get the ball onto te line, never mind though, Mr White’s arm is raised, Floody adds the extras. So we play for 20 minutes, score 4 tries, game over. During this, the dominance of the scrum, lineout and breakdown only go one way, Parling renewing his relationship with the Falcon’s hooker to deliver numerous lineout steals.
In addition to this, there was also a disallowed 5th try and in all honesty I couldn’t tell who had grounded it.
Half time and we considered changing ends so that we could see the action in the second half, the weather helped us reach the right conclusion and as it panned out, we were again at the right end for the try.
I can only assume “Job Done” was the half time team talk from our side. Newcastle were better with the elements at their back and actually played position quite well. In this they were helped as Tigers seemed to get a bit frustrated when every touch didn’t yield a try and some aimless kicking ensured. Falcons put in a beautifully weighted kick that bobbled just before the try line, Scott seemed in 2 minds whether to carry over for a relatively threat free 5m defensive scrum, Amesbury showed no such doubt and dotted down for a well converted try.
Falcons were still under pressure at the 1st phase and the breakdown and were not helped by a 10 minute rest after one of theirs gave Chutes some attention after the whistle
Falcons had their own 50:50 try disallowed and again I couldn’t be sure who got to it first. They then followed up with another bobbling kick to the line, Amesbury couldn’t believe his luck as Geordan seemed to dither as the ball approached the line, as ever, he was in full control and touched the ball down giving a massive “had you going there” grin at the crowd.
In general the defence was good, I wonder how good we could have been had we played for more than 20 minutes?
A good 3 hour drive home and weather apart, all in all a good day out.
