Subject: That story in the Sunday Times


Gentlemen,

By now you will all be well aware of the fictitious story in the Sunday Times on 14 January 2006 regarding the Super 10 proposals for the Premiership.

We believe that this story was concocted by senior figures within Premier Rugby Limited to try to garner support for their cause in our ongoing dispute with the clubs.

While we all know that there is little truth in the Times article, it has actually given Martin Thomasand I a fantastic idea that we wish to suggest to you all ahead of the 4 month “consultation process”!

The idea of a Super 10 is all well and good, but we feel that it still involves too many teams and that the locations are still a bit too “traditional rugby” for our liking as the clubs & towns spurned may feel hard done by.

To this end, we are proposing the creation of entirely new Super Regions in areas currently untouched by rugby clubs yet instantly recognisable to the English public.

We therefore suggest the formation of teams in the following towns around the UK:

Midlands- Ambridge
North West 1 - Knotty Ash
North West 2 - Weatherfield
London1 - Walford
London 2 - Sun Hill
South - Walmington-on-Sea
North East - Emmerdale
Oxfordshire – Dibley


These eight Super Clubs are in towns already well known to our target audience and should help spread the Rugby Union gospel far and wide, whilst steering clear of the current hot-beds of rugby rebellion that have caused us so many problems of late!


Our play is the eight teams to play each other once each, either home OR away, and then end the season with a play-off competition to decide the champion.

1st will play 8th, 2nd v 7th, 3rd v 6th and 4th v 5th in the first play-off round
The winners of each game will then continue in a standard knockout format until we have the 2 finalists.

We propose that Twickenham stages both the Semi Finals (Anyone fancy another Double Header?) and of course the Final.

That way, no side will play more than 11 league games in a season, giving our Internationals all the rest they should require, plus we get lots more money from ticket sales, and can guarantee our usual comfy seats rather than those wooden things that Leicester always used to make us sit on.

Representation in the Heineken Cup can carry on as usual, with our top 6 Super Clubs filling the places each season. (NB: Can we ensure that Knotty Ash & Emmerdale become our the English “Connacht” each year so that we keep a reasonable geographic mix but also guarantee the Southern teams always “qualify”? That way we can save on junket mileage (more money for gin!) & keep our visits to the Northern Outposts to a minimum at the same time.

Eight Super Clubs also works well with that EDF thing. Enough sides to keep the Taffs occupied for a few weeks, but not enough to trouble our fixture list too heavily.

Suggestions/comments are welcome through the usual channels of course, but try to keep this one away from the media. They are getting sneakier by the day! Only last week one of them managed to sneak a quick phone interview with me by pretending to be a rep for Tanqueray!
