The long, boring summer is coming to an end. Rugby fans are coming out of hibernation. The wait for live Championship rugby is at an end. We have had the appetisers, four games already played so far this weekend, and today comes the main event: Carnegie play at the Mennaye against old rivals, Cornish Pirates. Oh and there is the small matter of Bris v Wuss....
There are no real surprises in the selected team. Injuries have meant that selection is of those who are fit and we welcome the debut of "Lala" Edwards in the second row. Lala is a student at Leeds Met.
The Pirates, who ran us close in the same fixture last season, are a team in transition. They have a lot of young players with some older lads nurturing them through their early days of championship rugby. This will bear fruit in the medium term but leaves us with a big question mark over how they will perform today. The same can be said of our boys with 5 debutants so the game could go either way.
The Pirates' fans have us down as favourites and feel that there is no pressure on their team. I do not think that our lads will feel unduly pressured so it could be quite an even match.
We might be struggling for a commentary so any input/updates will be most welcome!
In reality a bit of a scrappy, first of the season game for both sides. Leeds forwards looked good, scrum quite solid and particular credit to Ben Harris for the last scrum of the first half - showed real character. Generally set pieces were good and forwards worked hard but may need to step up a level for next week.
Scrum was generally good, line out solid and a good work rate. 3 tries for the forwards ( and another by our 6 in open play) all in all very good. A few slips and trips but all in all good. I would say a B- but I am a harsh marker. SFS may be kinder but he would have needed to see all the tries!
A bit of a contrast to last year at Donny, I am happy to note.
And Geech warned us at the fans' evening that we would not be firing on all cylinders for a few weeks due to delayed operations, so we should hopefully get stronger.
tarquin sfs may be kinder but he would have needed to see all the tries
I only missed two tries for beer breaks. Perhaps more beer is called for on my 50% rate. Sorry no updates but could not get any signal.
Rebranded as ‘Yorkshire Carnegie’
Good win and good luck for the rest of the season. Hopefully we can do you a favour or two along the way, after all we both live in Gods country don't we?
Thanks for that Bob. I love Cornwall but I think you'll find God broke the mould after he made Yorkshire!
Great start for us. The first time I can remember that we haven't shot ourselves in the foot after a promotion/re-brand etc.
I was quietly confident because we're strong in the front row and Tommy's only slipped up once - at Scottish last year. Good job from him. Let's see what GM adds next week.
