Leeds Carnegie's third trip to Sandy Park was their first in the Premiership. The previous two had resulted in wins which was some incentive for them to live up to their past victories.
Under grey skies and in front of a crowd of 7743 the first half was an error strewn affair with both sides equally adept at blowing chances and coughing up hard won possession. It was 21 minutes before Leeds managed to get into the Chiefs' 22 but to no avail. After breakdowns in play by both sides we managed to make matters worse by incurring the wrath of Mr Pearson and conceded free kicks and penalties at scrums. ( I cannot comment on the appropriateness or otherwise of these infringements as my position behind the posts was not the best to observe the subtelties of scrummaging.)
Ceiron Thomas, who had hit the post with one penalty in the first half, was the beneficiary of some kind of sympathetic treatment from Mr Pearson who showed that he wasn't all bad. Michael Stephenson was taken out after kicking ahead and the offence was spotted by a touch judge. DP awarded a Carnegie penalty some 20 metres in from touch when the ball had landed almost on the touchline. Thomas duly obliged by converting the penalty to bring the sides in for the break at 6-3 to the Chiefs.
The errors from both sides continued in the second half and though the match was not a classic it had some entertainment value as both sides endeavoured to move the ball at various stages. When Lee Blackett broke down the wing and kicked ahead Marco Wentzel was able to beat the Exeter players to the ball. Panic appeared to ensue in both sides, attack and defence, and all that was gained was three points for Carnegie when Exeter were adjudged to have gone offside.
The Chiefs got the better of the penalty calls later in the second half and had the reliable kicking of Ryan Davis to thank for the victory which denied Leeds birthday bay, Peter Wackett a four point present. whether he was satisfied with a single bonus point on his 23rd birthday was a moot point as the Carnegie camp seemed to be a disappointed outfit at the end.
I am not a coach but felt more encouraged than of late after a display which, but for some more dilligent application, could have delivered a much more appreciated four point haul.
