Leeds Lose out to Bouyant Bath

Masterful performance

By Janet & Calden Batt
April 9 2008

In the build-up to the match, it looked as if Bath weren't really bothered with the European Challenge Cup. Our preview speculated that this could have been due to apathy on the part of Bath. On the day, there was nothing apathetic about Bath's performance, as Janet & Calden Batt report...

Bath kick off and all is well, until Leeds give away a penalty;3-0 and less than two minutes into the game. At the restart the ball is charged down. Leeds are unable to collect.Bath keep hold but knock on. Leeds get some ball, only to be penalised at the scrum. However Leeds did steal the lineout, tried to chip over the defence but nobody was alert to it so possesion was lost again.Bath had a free kick but kicked out on the full. This turned out to be rather good play by Leeds as Mcdonald charged through but had no support, from a box kick the ball went dead.

Bath then had a number of penalties, and poor tackling from Leeds allowed Banahan to score,Barkley converting. Oakley came on for the injured Clark. Again poor tackling from Leeds allowed a breakthrough, but a good effort was made to tackle a Bath player as the ball seemed to go loose but a try was awarded and converted. This didnt deter Leeds as a breakthrough the defence led to a good try from Vickerman however Greendale missed the conversion 17-5 after about 30 minutes. This seemed to wake the lads up as quick ball play from the ruck led to a good passage of play but was turned over,Lund could have gone over had he collected a charge down. With seconds of the first half remaining things looked OK.

Leeds got off to a bad start with poor tackling which lead to Higgins scoring Barkley converted 2 mins into the second half.Rawly was replaced by Parkes. Leeds had a few penalties but failed to make use of them.Inability to tackle led to a converted try by Barkley. A quick tap penalty from Leeds but could'nt get through the defence and ball was lost again. Leeds were struggling to defend and good play by Bath came with a try from Banahan, Barkley missed the conversion 36-5. Bedford replaced Edwards but it was to late and things were not looking good. The ref then stopped play while he was heped to his feet after a being tackled - well he would insist on getting in the way! Then Bath began to run riot with a converted try by Barkley 45-5. Leeds did however get some ball but failed to see an overlap and the ball was lost, which led to a breakaway try Bath even had time for a discussion on who would put the ball down, with Browne taking the honours and Barkley converted again. A measure of how poor a game it had been for Leeds was that we noticed at this point that two ducks flew through the posts, which was all that did go through for Leeds all afternoon!

The game was wrapped up with another Banahan try which again Barkley converted. Final score 57-5

Thanks for that. A fine "debut" report. Sounds grim from a Leeds perspective. We will do better this week.

Thanks to the Tykes Live on and LCSF team for their first report, sounds like it was a long day but I hope your trip was worth it all the same

See you at the Quins game and here's to "Thumbs Up" @ full time

(PS: bringing my 'Lucky Mascot' from the Newcastle game to see the Quins game: a second one-point win would go down a treat!)

Some say he has a Tykes flag with team signatures on.
Others say that he's doing the same to the Carnegie flag,
All we know is that he's called Leeds carnegie signed flag.

Thanks for the report, interesting what you recall when you look at your notes after the game. The facts are often different to the memory. Well done.
