The last time Bristol headed for Leeds, the club appeared to be heading for troubled waters. This time around, despite a mixed start to the season and a good start for Leeds, there is more reason for optimism.

The visit to Headingley came after a fine home victory over Newcastle. The weeks preceding the win over the Falcons had been difficult, however, as Bristol had gone out of the European Shield to Sale and lost away to Wasps.

Peter Thorburn had been introduced to the media only a few days before the game and the first hint of a rumour regarding Dean Ryan linking up with Nigel Melville at Gloucester had emerged.

Agustin Pichot and Lee Best were out through injury. Darren Crompton was suspended after being red carded and Tim Payne had broken his hand. Ross Beattie was still out.

The day emerged and the weather was foul. Braam van Straaten played beautifully and Bristol self destructed by having Matt Salter and Chris Morgan sinbinned. Adam Vander lasted only half an hour before withdrawing through illness. Leeds were comfortable winners 24-6.

After the event, rumours emerged of a car park bust up between Dean Ryan and one of the players. It didn't appear to be a happy camp and the defeat on Sky TV away at London Irish a week later seemed to confirm things.

Bristol, however, were about to rise. Results started to pick up, the performances were scintillating and a trip to Twickenham was around the corner.

So, Bristol prepare for the trip north once again. Spirits will be high after the win over Leicester. Daryl Gibson's arrival has given the club a bit of a lift and even Julian White's suspension will not affect the feeling of optimism.
