It should be quite the occasion, the first of a (probable) double header against one of our oldest rivals.We have been fortunate enough to have seen some very special matches at The Rec in the last 12 months or so and this could be another.It will be billed as a Winner Takes It All scenario which is not quite true. Both teams will definitely play in the semi-finals, the only questions are where and against whom. The importance of this weekend lies in the fact that away semi-final wins are rare beasts. Since 2015, only Quins - in the ridiculous 2021 Bristanbul game - have managed it. And no team finishing third in the league have ever won the final.
After our defeat at Ashton Gate last Friday, the expectation was very simple. Two Bath v Leicester games await, the winner of the first match hosting the more important second.
Exeter's win at Welford Road on Sunday changed the narrative. Leicester could now finish fourth should they lose and Exeter beat Saracens. Should that come to pass we would host Chiefs and Tigers would travel to Saints.
Saints were the only one of the top three to win in Round 17 and even then were losing against Gloucester as the clock ticked towards the red. We were poor at Bristol and Leicester were very much second best at home. All three teams are stuttering as the finish line approaches and the momentum seems to lie with the chasing pack.
The concern is that Bath are stuttering more than the others. Our season has begun to look like a marathon runner who started brightly but has hit the wall with just a few miles to go.
The emotional European knockout stages seem to have robbed us of energy and sharpness in the League.
I had the opportunity to talk to someone close to the first team squad couple of weeks ago and was left with the feeling that the team are very focused on this week's game. Bristol mattered - derbies always matter - but Leicester was far and above the priority. There was a quiet, unspoken confidence that if we secured a home semi we would go on to win the whole thing.
We will see if the team can come with a renewed attitude, discipline and fluidity this weekend. We can be sure JVG will have been as meticulous in his preparation as ever.
Leicester’s key concern will be at 10. Having lost Handre Pollard after last year's final, they signed three unexpected names for this campaign in Searle, Bailey and O'Connor.
Two of those, including Prem Player of the Season nominee Searle, are out injured and the third - Bailey - is now firmly established at 12. Young Charlie Titcombe took the shirt against Exeter but relied heavily on the outstanding Bailey who moved seamlessly between first and second receiver. Bath need to ensure we don't give Landy the same space and freedom this weekend. He can expect a few welcome back tackles from the Bath back row.
For all the intrigue of old mates Max v Landy in midfield, it will be the packs and the set piece that will definite the outcome. Our line out was (a little) better against Bristol than in recent weeks; Tigers' was uncharacteristically very poor against Exeter.
The scrum will be well matched with old heads and canny operators on both sides. Let's hope we get a clean, fair, well officiated battle. It was interesting to hear Radio Leicester's commentators at the weekend suggest that the Tigers style of scrummaging seems to be 'marmite' to referees with some rewarding them frequently whilst others clearly see something illegal in their approach.
Talking of the officials, our penalty count needs to improve. At this stage of the season against a highly physical and capable team, back-to-back offence will give the Tigers maul ample opportunities to score.
The selection debate is already well underway on a separate thread with the backs the main area of debate. Finn's fitness is the immediate concern with less than encouraging noises coming out of Farleigh House. It may be he is kept back again for the final. If that comes to pass, the task of securing that all important home semi will get a little more difficult than it already is.
Finally, the game will be an opportunity for the club and the city to honour Roger Spurrell who sadly passed away this week.
Roger played in many a battle against Leicester and we could do with a few Spurrell-esque performances this week. The team should lack for nothing in motivation and inspiration.

A win over old rivals would be the most appropriate tribute. As you say, Tigers relied heavily on Orlando Bailey for midfield direction. If Finn is not fit I believe Ciaran Donoghue will want to shake off the rust of last Friday and show why he was edging ahead of Landy at Bath.
Should be a cracker, but we definitely need the crowd to engage. The Rec is often accused of seeming like a library on matchdays. Surely not when Tigers are in town?

I think the point on the Tigers scrum is a good one, Rokobilly. Nicky Smith is a top player but he's not the most powerful loosehead. He seems to get success by finding ways to manipulate an advantage rather than over powering an oppponent and some referees are going to take against that if they think he's not straight or whatever. Similarities with Paul James to my eye.
Incidentally Smith and Beno are listed as the same weight online and I can't believe Beno doesn't have 5-10 kgs on him in reality.

Nicky Smith is a wily operator at the scrum. He is also often penalised for packing at an angle and for dropping the scrum/his bind.

Many thanks Rokobilly. How Tigers react to last week’s sloppy performance against a very good Exeter and who gets the 10 shirt will be key to our fortunes or lack thereof.

Does doesn't it. Frankly I'm a bit bewildered. For consistency we should select Donoghue at 10 and bring back TDG at 15 but that leaves out Santi.
Surely Santi was bought for just this eventuality to drop in if Finn ever had a problem. Thing is though Santi has played 12 times at 15 and only 2 at 10 this season. Hardly a seamlessly bedded in fly half.
If Finn isn't fit it has to be Santi at 10, I'd also leave out OL as he hasn't played anywhere near his capabilities this season.
Have a look at the Tigers replacement loosehead, Archie Van Der Flier, he will be better than Nicky, one to watch, came through our academy.

Completely agree, Santi's experience could be crucial. It just feels too important to risk CD's inexperience and potential on Saturday. Max and either Hennessy or Cam in the centres. What's the Leicester situation at FH at the moment?

Personally I’d stick to CD if Finn is out. Redpath in for OL. He’d have learned a lot last week, despite not really doing much wrong.
Definitely Santi at 10 , Tom at 15 and CD on the bench if Finn not fit .

I really can’t see the logic of selecting OL He will get back to top form but he needs a summer of recovery to do so. We have two excellent alternatives in Cam & Hennessy. I favour the latter at present.

Am sure Underhill will be instructed to tickle the ribs of OB2(?). Feels like we really need to target him to disrupt their attack, which is about as a big a compliment to the lad as I can pay him. Seems to have turned into the player Bath knew he could be.
Mentioned in another thread that their backline seems pretty small though, so Barbeary from the off running straight at 10 and 12 seems logical. Expect Kata to start to counter that threat though.

Thanks for the tip off. Someone also noting they'll have consecutive 6-day turnarounds if they finish 4th and Saints their opponents will likely rotate heavily this weekend, so well rested.
Also that it was Ian Tempest responsible for Smith getting pinged on Sunday. Let's hope Spenny gets in his ear about that nice and early!
Take this with the usual pinch of salt, but a mate of mine who’s close to a few people in the Tigers camp reckons O’Connor will start on Saturday, just probably won’t last the full 80.

No I agree it was right for him, Bath and Tigers for the move.
Sadly it’s definitely been the right move for him - would have loved him to stay but the bloom in his career has been fantastic to view.
I still however think that we run Barbs down his channel and get Underhill/Pepper to hit him hard and he will fold. Disrupt him and get parity in the scrum and we win

Hard to turn down the opp of signing someone as good as santi I guess- think they didn't foresee how well and quickly donoghue would kick on.

Landy also got injured just as the Prem Cup started during the 6N - and then Donaghue got his opportunity and didn't look back. He had really unlucky timing.
It is always great to see local lads doing well, but I think it is hard to argue especially with Orlando that for whatever reason it did not happen for him, he just failed to kick on and nail down a starting berth despite being given so many opportunities others did not have. Sometimes for no reason it just doesn't work - Freddie Burns comes to mind for me.
At the end of the day I really like Orlando but IMHO he is not better than Cam R, Max O, Ollie L, Will B or Louis H and he certainly is not in the same postcode at present to Finn or Santi C (even though we have yet to see his best), that is not to say he may in time elevate himself towards that status who knows.

I think that some players just get unlucky with the timing of their careers (or parts of their careers).
Some of the 03 Eng players weren't world class but they were fortunate to be play in an era with Johnson, Dallaglio, Wilkinson, Robinson etc and top coaches. Bailey suffered, and it didn't work out with us, because he reached first XV rugby age at a time when the club was in a complete mess in the Hooper era. Donoghue has emerged into a rock solid structure, surrounded by confident players and coaches. They seem like similar quality players (although with different skills sets) but on different trajectories with Bath because of their surroundings. Just timing. Like for all of us! We could have been born in the Middle Ages lol!
Interestingly I saw a stat about how Orlando has made more dominant tackles than any other 12 in the Prem. So whilst I like the idea of running Alfie down his channel, it might not work as his defence is actually pretty strong. More interestingly I think is their decision to stick with Titcombe (or a fit again fly half) at 10 and Landy at 12 or move Landy. With my BB&W specs on, I hope they move him to 10 as I think Leicester's strength as been Landy and Wand creating space for Radwan and OHC. Some of the 03 Eng players weren't world class but they were fortunate to be play in an era with Johnson, Dallaglio, Wilkinson, Robinson etc and top coaches. Bailey suffered, and it didn't work out with us, because he reached first XV rugby age at a time when the club was in a complete mess in the Hooper era. Donoghue has emerged into a rock solid structure, surrounded by confident players and coaches. They seem like similar quality players (although with different skills sets) but on different trajectories with Bath because of their surroundings. Just timing. Like for all of us! We could have been born in the Middle Ages lol!
Interestingly I saw a stat about how Orlando has made more dominant tackles than any other 12 in the Prem. So whilst I like the idea of running Alfie down his channel, it might not work as his defence is actually pretty strong. More interestingly I think is their decision to stick with Titcombe (or a fit again fly half) at 10 and Landy at 12 or move Landy. With my BB&W specs on, I hope they move him to 10 as I think Leicester's strength as been Landy and Wand creating space for Radwan and OHC. I think that just goes to show that it's how a hooker deals with the pressure rather than the ability to chuck a rugby ball that matters. A recently retired Prem hooker talked me through the process quite recently - stressing how hard it is to go from the mayhem and high heart-rate of flying round the pitch one minute, to the still-small-moment-of-calm that is required to process a sometimes complex call and calmly hit the target the next. Left me with my head spinning!

Injuries mounting just when we could have done without them! But hey ho- still a strong squad and hoping Pepper and Russell will be back next week, as we'll need them wherever we end up playing! They seem to have either dropped or lost to injury Whiteley, Moro (good news for us) and OHC. Looks like Henderson is picked to go after our line out, so Kepu and Ewels will have to be on the money.

Struggling to separate those 2 teams in any meaningful way. Going to be an absolute humdinger! Can't wait.
Their team annoucement isn't clear on unavailability so assume Moro and OHC are injured. Think our backrow has the edge with them missing Moro and Ilione. If you limit Reffell's turnover chances I think he's quite limited outside of that so asks a lot of others which could help us.

I have to say my one concern is Lawrence who seems well off the pace but without Hennessey who we could really do with we have to rely on him & Cam. I imagine it will be a highly attritional encounter. Not over confident based on recent form.
Really like the look of that that team but as ever it (obviously) depends on their mental preparedness. Happy to see Carreras at 10, him and OL need to show their best form, they are certainly capable.

Wise move IMHO in relation to Russell - it is more important he is fully fit for next week no matter where it is - potentially Pepper and anyone else carrying an injury - from what I have heard Russell, Roux, Dunn and unbelievably Bernard VDL all should be fit for next week.

Orlando being let go is an assumption - he may have sought a move when he realised that Donoghue's rise and Carreras' signing stacked the odds against regular starts.

I know both teams have had wobbles in recent games but I worry Tigers have the edge mentally. The lure of turning us over to get a home SF will be a significant driver. We need to be at our best for the next 2/3 games. If we believe we can blow any team away on our day, then now is the time to bring it out of the cupboard.

I think Tiger's have the best defence in the league according the stats shown last weekend, they also appear to be up there with best scrum and line out - both sides of the ball.
Bath defensively have been OK (3rd in the infographic if I recall). However a large part of that is down to territory being at the forefront of our game plan and without Finn we do seem to struggle to find space in the backfield as easily.
Set piece has been pretty poor all season I'd say, particularly the line out. Down to constant rotation of the team maybe?

10 yellows this season but only Quins and Tigers are in single figures. Tigers also lowest penalty count in the league.
They are also well clear of any other team when it comes to kicking penalties (20 vs our 6) so you're right - need to be squeaky clean tomorrow or they will take the points whenever possible it seems.
Strangely, Northampton have worst discipline in the PREM - highest yellows (14) and most penalties conceded too. Didn't expect that.

Must say I'm a big fan of the team picked! TDG will just be that bit safer at 15 and Santi can take the reins of the attack at 10. He has always looked better when he is the focal point of the attack (as does any player).

Henry on recent form, but not too much in it - hopefully he can prove me wrong. A few too many defensive errors from HA and doesn’t look quite as engaged as at the start of the season.

This is a huge game. If we lose we are unlikely to turn it round away from home & that will be our season & effectively our era at an end after just one Premiership title. I know we did pretty well against BB but we threw everything into that game & losing was a huge blow mentally. We then lose to two local rivals & had a patchy game against Newcastle. The backline failed to function & our discipline has evaporated. I’ll be hugely relieved if we get over the line.

Just seen the ref is Tempest which means there’s no chance of a flowing and entertaining game and little chance Bath go the whole game with 15 on the pitch. IMO clearly the worst ref in the PL.
Maybe someone has already pointed it out but I have noticed that our match is now on HBO. Interesting that they have 2 players displayed who are not playing!

I am so relieved we don't have to play them again next week. As I've said here a few times, I just don't like the psychology of that at all.

Yeah - I think the officiating as a whole was good, but that lack of consistency around warnings and YCs is infuriating

Might have been Tempest’s best game but he was still awful and should not have been in charge of such a high profile game. Sara Cox should have been in charge instead.

As usual the refereeing wasn't the decider. It almost never is in rugby and we shouldn't go down that dark alley.

My big ask for next week...or more realistically next season, is how we get more out of that Bath back line? I dont remember a single line break today ...given the talent we've got, that just doesnt feel right.
On paper, I'd argue Spencer, Russell, Lawrence/Redpath, Ojomoh, Cockanasiga, Arundell, TDG ...that is as potent as any in the league ...but on the grass, we just dont seem to pose the attacking threat I'd hope for.

It’s not a one eyed view BM, he missed blatant things for both teams so I guess it evened itself out, but he’s just not good enough at this level. The yellow card at the end was an absolute joke of a decision in terms of lack of consistency.

Big shift from the whole squad. Tigers would have been delighted with the conditions and we fronted up very well. I was less impressed with Tempest than some here (although watching live from a fixed position makes it very hard to judge accurately).
I did think there was no way the Leicester jackaler who won the penalty that set up the final attack was supporting his weight.
It was a day to front up and get over the line. TDT and TDG both immense.

I thought Tempest was poor today. The conditions didn't help either side but we seemed to be reffed out of the scrum and the breakdown. The JoCo YC was laughable given Tigers behaviour in their 22 as we banged on the try line in the 1st half. Tigers v smart slowing our ball down and playing us w/out the ball around the fringes. Glad we got over the line but we need to be better out wide. Onwards we go

And can't deny we should have been in YC territory at the end. Only questions are around whether we were given a warning or not or even should we have seeded to have a warning?

Would have preferred Sara Cox though, she seems to have a much more natural rapport with the players and the game seems to flow more when she’s in charge

I was watching live at the Rec w/out the benefit of studio analysis but the Bath supporters around me were just as baffled and incensed about some of his decisions. It's all over now but I hope we don't have him again in the middle or the TMO truck for Chiefs and the final IF we get there...

A lot of that was Sara Cox today! You could hear all the officials on Reflink and she was giving Tempest a lot of useful insight. I don't know enough about the game to give a knowledgeable comment about a ref, but it is noticeable that Tempest tends to go quiet on his "say what you see" commentary when things are getting a bit messy or confused and he apparently doesn't really know what he saw!

View from the East stand - watching Leicester warm up yoi could see they were very up for it and their line speed was key to their game plan today. They were also very deliberately slowing down rucks and disrupting Spencer’s ball. A lot of the time that looked marginal at best but once Tempest had let them play that way they obviously kept it up. So often they were going off feet or were ahead of the back foot.
Effort was great and credit to the whole squad for seeing that one out - thought Leicester played well. Agree TDT and TDG standouts for us, but also thought Kepu, Ted, Sam, Josh all very good.

Felt to me like there wasn’t much more than a ref decision here and there between the teams. Certainly never felt comfortable. You could barely tell which was the attacking back-line on our put-in, so flat were we lined up, so there was never the remotest intention of running it. Maybe we shaded the aerial battle, with Spencer’s phenomenal height and accuracy and Joe’s excellence. Boy could we do with an Itoje type lineout operator who just has the knack of nicking a crucial ball.
Despite the limitations of that performance, I feel like it will put the Bordeaux hangover to bed and get us back on track.

He warmed up with the team - and someone on facebook noted he ran for the first time on Thursday/Friday with no reaction so plans to train this week coming as normal.

Watching at the Rec, without benefit of Reflink it was notable that he blew late for a number of offences that happened right in front of him, suggesting that "a word in his ear" persuaded him to act. That adds to the feeling that he was missing some infringements that should have been obvious.
While I agree that referee error seldom changes the result of a game, I still question why, after 7? 9? penalties against Tigers on their line just prior to the head contact on TdT, there was neither warning nor card, yet 3 Bath offences in the last few minutes did bring a yellow.
We are told not to expect perfection from officials, but to ask for consistency - fair enough, I agree. So, let's have that consistency.

Big Joe's yellow card - you could hear Tempest telling Tiggers he was going to put us on a warning, but offered them the chance to go quickly. Naturally they chose that, so they knew we were on a warning but we didn't.
It hasn’t affected the end result which is good but yes, all seems a bit odd - but then never mind because we won!
Fingers crossed for no injuries, was worried about Barbs after that knee shot but he seemed to run it off.

TdT is putting in big shifts now for the team but was used sparingly through the season, he starts every time if fit for me and we are a better side for it. He'll be gone soon and Sela will get plenty of minutes next season

It could have gone either way as I had expected but I’m delighted we gained the home S/F We will have home advantage & vital players back but we need to improve significantly on today’s showing to beat this much Improved Exeter team.
Just watched the game in a hotel room at LAX. I still find it mindboggling that I can stream hd tv on a phone line! One for the purists except the purists would have recognized the quality that was on show in those conditions. That was a peach of an old fashioned arm wrestle and you wouldn't bet against it being the final. Nice to see OB2 playing so well even if it was in the wrong shirt and very small margins between the teams except for

There will always be decisions by officials I disagree with but thought they had a good game. Agree with DB that jvp pass was clearly forward in build up to a try and would put that one on the tmo rather than tempo) . agree with comments about inconsistency on yellows. All in all that isn't much to moan about in 80 mins of rugby though so well done ro them.

Tdt was immense and agree he has been v well managed so let's get what can from him for the next 1/2 games.

Ollie lawrence looks a bit shot to me. Getting hooked after that knock on won't be great for his confidence. Shane hennessey not fit but do think there is now a good argument for cam/ mojo pairing.
V glad beno took the advice of our friend A20 and learnt how to scrummage. Hopefully just cramp at the end of a massive effort.
Leic were v dogged and have a decent chance against saints - rarely going to be out of games with that front 5 and mental toughness. Ilione back playing aswell now.

When I played we did our damndest to win/intimidate/occasionally stretch the laws of the games, but
we respected the man(or woman these days) with the whistle, without them the game is rubbish(I know I played in a game for our old vets team with no ref, it was a farce).
We looked for our opposite number in the bar afterwards and bought him a pint, I find some of the pontificating afterwards a tad embarrassing if I'm honest.

I always used to leave it until the Monday to post after a match but I’m older and more chilled / sanguine these days…more important issues in the world than a game a rugby (much as I enjoy watching one).

But Rugby Union wants incidents and refereeing to generate engagement.
It's why we spend more time watching replays of potential head collisions than of the actual trys scored. It's why Healey's commentary has pivoted from pointing out player errors to pointing out player infringements.
How many articles are written and forum posts generated based on the perceived performance of a referee?
Far too many, which is partly to blame for the shortage of referees at grass roots level.

Santi just doesn’t seem willing to run it back unless it’s very broken field, whereas Tom will run it back and pick a ‘target’ area where forwards can get to him quickly to secure the breakdown even though that invariably means taking a bit of a clattering.
Think TdG cemented himself as the starter for the Senis and Final - Harsh in Carreras who hasn’t done anything wrong per se, but he just makes everyone look a little more fluid.

I think it was a case of getting an injury at the wrong time, just as Donoghue started to find form.
Really pleased Bailey is thriving at Tigers though!
Bailey really did have a great game. That 50:22 kick in first half was class and his pen kick to 5m from our line in second half was excellent
A couple of big encouraging takeaways for us
Our power and teamwork to get TdT over the line 3 times against such a strong, dogged Leicester defence
The organisation and strength in our defensive maul equally impressive
But my other big note is seeing Ojomoh's tackling and all round defensive work. This was supposedly a stat that he is weak on compared to his rivals for the England 12 shirt but he was seriously impressive in that area
