Player Fitness Must Improve

Swansea City Manager, Kenny Jackett has told his players that their fitness levels need to improve if results are to improve on the pitch.  Jackett was speaking ahead of tomorrow's match at Lincoln City.

"To be fair, I can't really comment on what's gone in the past as I haven't been around all season," said Jackett.

"But what I am doing is starting to look at these players and the club as a whole to impose my own personality on it and maximise the potential of the people we've got here.

"And I do think that (fitness levels) is one area where we can improve things.

"We also have a long injury list. We need to get players back fit and available because we haven't got the biggest of squads."

Jackett was asked to compare the levels of fitness of his new players to those of his old players at Queens Park Rangers.  "There is no doubt they are not as fit as that group of players," he said.

The 42-year-old refused to talk about individuals, but he said, "I'm sure there are individuals here who are conscientious and determined to do well.

"But, having been here for only four days, that is something I'll hold my judgment on for now."

When questioned on criticism that the players lacked passion or desire in Wednesday's defeat at Rhyl, Jackett did defend his players however, "I don't think it was a performance that was lacking in passion or desire," he said. "I thought they did show application and effort.

"Don't get me wrong - there are no excuses in terms of the result. You would hope that Swansea, a Third Division side, would be able to cope with a team from the Welsh Premiership.

"But I have to say that, so far, the players are giving me everything every day. I wouldn't question their commitment to the cause."

The Swans now lie 10 points behind the last play-off spot with six games remaining.  And Kenny Jackett would not dish out false hope.  "Someone said we'd need to win seven of our last six matches to get into the play-offs and they're probably right!"
