New Site Feature

By SN HQ
July 9 2015

The mods at COYSC have kindly agreed that the site can be become a bit of a guinea pig for some new features they are helping us develop -  and which you should see on the site in the next day or so.

We are looking to make the site even more of an everyday part of the life of a Saints supporter by introducing our own news aggregator. This will pick up stories about the club as they appear across the web and allow you to click through to read them.

In addition, there will be a new and bigger video player alongside the aggregator. It will allow you to access top quality highlights of Saints' games and will obviously come into its own when the new season starts.

Any thoughts, suggestions, criticisms and recommendations will be most welcome.

Between the new bit and the massive Halfords advert you get over a page of stuff before seeing what you've actually come to this site to see.

Might be better in the side bar.

That is truly horrible. What is it with IT people and the word 'feature'?

I think the News and Video boxes should be 20% smaller and the site banner increased to fit the remaining real-estate. Our current banner is not suitable for this new layout but that can be updated.

I understand and appreciated the use of the features. Not sure how i will get on with them. I get the feeling that before long the video section will probably carry adverts too (as with many sites).

Still, at least there doing something.

Might also be worth them looking into adding in rugby network news feeds into the news box, perhaps using a specific colour to denote "in-site" news items.

And while i have my thinking head on, the news feed should be customizable to add in other teams / sports per user as some of us have other interests :-)

It's far too big, and has squashed the current Banner. I was in the process of re-doing the Banner to reflect the current Team/Shirt colours. I'll hold off until you decide the format.

Auto-playing the same video every time I click on a new page or message. (Auto-playing video at all come to that....)

Thank you for the comments so far, guys and gals - this is very much a work in progress so the more info you can give us (and SN!) the better!

As said ... people come here primarily to read/post messages. These videos are available only 2 or so clicks away, on the offy site. IMO they just add clutter & make COYS look far too busy upon arrival ... If they are needed can they be placed at the bottom of the page?

I like the newsfeed, not fussed about the video's and don't mind not having a huge banner.

Suggestion, maybe lose the video, pop the newsfeed to that space and make the banner fill the current newsfeed space so it can be bigger but just squarer and be the first thing that visitors see.

Can the news feed be slowed down a bit, I too am not bothered about the videos. Might change my mind though when season starts.

I like the newsfeed but agree that being able to customise is for the teams / sports you want to see would be a good move (I've got Ultimate Rugby on my phone, so don't need every news story all over again).

Slowing down the news feed again would be a good idea.

I'm not a fan of the videos - especially the fact that they auto-play. They take up too much space. The newsfeed would be better in two columns, losing the videos and shrinking the height a little. A little concerned about load times when on slower WiFi connections / on my mobile.

I use this site at work so I don't want video, especially not something that auto-plays.
And to be honest, the media hounds on this site are good at picking up on pretty much anything of interest so I can take or leave the news feed.

The only thing that really annoys me is the facebook like button. It appears slower on the website and then moves the rest of the page. This means if you click on something and then suddenly realise the facebook button hasn't appeared yet and then moves the whole page down you end up actually clicking on something completely different to what you intended. This could be resolved quite easily by fixing the area the facebook button is in so it is automatically the right size for the button rather than allowing the website to automatically adapt for the button to fit.

Installing the Chrome AdBlock extension gets rid of the ads.

I am with X-Block Dave... I like the message board and can take or leave anything else. I rarely use any of the extra links and "features" except for PMming from time to time.

For video, I go to the offy or YouTube. For news, I go to all kinds of places including other SN sites. That's the beauty of the Internet, lots of different places to go, you don't have to have everything on the same screen at once!

It always amazes me when people complain about the advertising on here. At the end of the day what pays for the service we have. So I view advertising as a necessary evil. It pays for my habit.

I am getting used to the header. Admittedly I did see an earlier version so I can see the improvements already incorporated.

Dave - the Aggregator does scroll quite quickly. I also get some odd characters showing for punctuations (but that is probably my set up)

I for one do like the player. It may be autoplay but it is on mute so I don't have work issues.

Overall good feature.

ASs said above the news scroll is a bit fast, and on my PC ( Firefox browser) has a quite a few strange punctuation symbols

I can cope with the video and news scoller on the home page but I cannot see the point of them on every thread page. It's exactly the same video autoplaying every page view and it is eating bandwidth/data for no real (IMO) benefit.

If the news link box was smaller it would be okay, but people usually link torelevant pieces after match anyway.

Don't like larger video as it slows site so much.

smurfomatic

Agree with Christy & Saintly Pursuit about the video slowing things down, if you have two or three tabs open it's taking up a load of bandwidth for something I'm not even watching.

The only thing that I would add (apart from the fact that I don't really know what most people are talking about !) is that I would like a "like" button, simply to add a little bit of my opinion to a thread without actually having to get into an argument every time...........

Just sayin......:-)

Don't like it.

I know our Chairman is a likeable guy, but I am getting a little fed up of seeing him at the top of the message board every time I open it!

As to the news feed that could go to, as has been said before links are already put up by folks to (remotely) interesting topics on other sites. When this happens once the season starts, then these poor souls are leaving themselves open to KUATB moments as they will be told 'it is in the news feed!'
