The Summer Quiz 2014 Round 2

Round 2 of the Summer Quiz - Preceded by the answers to Round 1. We'll try something different this week - rather than everybody just blasting 1 or 2 answers in response - do not make your first response until you have answers to at least 50% of the questions. That will make it seem a little less like the entire site vs the quizitor!

 

 

Answers to Round 1

Round 2

 

There is  a slight bias this week towards the zoological – though not in every question.

2. True or false ?  -    The Southern Bush Adder is the only poisonous snake in NZ

 

3.  The Argentine national rugby team are known as the Pumas  -what is wrong with that ?

 

4. Excluding Zoos and other kept animals –which is the nearest country  to the UK with a wild wolf population

 

5.  which predators would you associate with the “acronyms “    - Pzkpfw  VI   and Pzkpfw V

 

6. Where or what am I -   “ I have two large squares one named after a Napoleonic French general and the other after an Italian liberator. The Church of England was involved  in building a  walkway by the sea to provide work for the unemployed ; my airport is the second busiest in the country.

 

7  What is the connection between- An Irish Nationalist , Warrington   and a Hitler HQ 

 

8. Who am I – I was born Heinz Alfred…………. in Bavaria  - but    throughout my adult life I was known by another anglicised first name. ; I played football as a youth and never lost my love for the game even when my family moved to the safety of another country.  I served in that country’s military and worked in intelligence.  I had a successful academic career graduating summa cum laude from one their  oldest universities .I rose to very high office in public service .  but because I was foreign born could never aspire to the highest office of all.

 

9.  What is the connection between Gunther Grass ; Rolf Harris   and a horse called Hercules

 

10.  Why and how was blue once a way of displaying ones wealth ?

2 false - there are not (supposed to be) any land snakes in NZ
3 the Cat on the UAR emblem is a Jaguar, not a Puma

5 V is Panther VI is Tiger (German WWII panzer tanks)

10 China - Feng Shui - colour of success etc. supposed to attract money (not too sure about this one though)

6 Nice a city in France. It has Place Massena ( French Napoleonic Marshall) and Place Garibaldi ( Italian liberator). It has a promenade des anglais which I confessIm guessing was built by the Church of England and if I can count both of the airports in Paris as one Id say the airport in Nice must be the second busiest given its a tourist destination

2 is doubly false as there are only two species of poisonous snake in the world and IIRC that isn't one of them. There are, however, many species of venomous snakes (Sm100)

think Guildford Saint has answered most of them except for 10 - blue or more correctly purple was used by Roman senators to edge their cloakes. It was a sign of status and wealth as it was made from a sea creature - although I can't remember its name

thanks for all your hard work Pete: at least I could answer some of these (which is why I think GS has many right)

It was a mollusc from the Murex family Christy. But Tyrian purple as it was called was purple not blue so I'm not sure it's the answer Pete wants. Like your reasoning though as it was a display of wealth.

The pigment Ultramarine, used in rennaisance painting, was made from ground Lapis Lazuli gemstones and was extremely expensive. I am not sure quite how this would fit into a display of wealth though, except possibly for the donors or commisioners of paintings.

9 past crimes?

10 is ultramarine paint - very expensive to manufacture until a synthetic pigment was created. I forget the name of the stone they used to have to grind down to produce ultramarine. So the why is because it cost a lot of money and the how was to have a painting commissioned!

Round one was pretty easy for some of you as all questions were correctly answered by at least some one.

Round three will I hope be more devious

No. 9 might be something to do with drum as I think Hercules is/was a drum horse of one of the Guards Regiments used in the Queens birthday parade and didn't Rolf record a song with the words "me and my drum"? dont know proper title of song. Dont know what Gunter Grasse has to do with it tho.
