Harlequin Ladies Outpaced in Memorial Game

On Sunday the Harlequin Ladies played a mixed team of Old Girls and Barbarians for the Sue Moloney Memorial Cup game, and found themselves short on pace out wide, writes Jo Everett. (Harlequin Ladies 5 - Old Girls/Barbarians 75)

The memorial game is played each year in memory of former Harlequin Lady, Sue Moloney, who died from meningitis five years ago.

This year saw the teams play 9-a-side, with the Quins team consisting mainly of forwards. Quins worked hard when they had the ball in hand, and some strong runs saw them repeatedly work their way into the opposition half.

However, each time the Old Girls gained possession, they made great use of their quick hands and superior pace to score try after try. At half-time they led 0 – 40.

The second half saw a similar pattern of play, but Quins persevered despite the scoreline.

The final few minutes saw a determined attack by the home team, forcing the Old Girls to concede several penalties.

After being held-up over the line twice, it was captain, Vicky Gallagher, who crashed through to give Quins their consolation try.

Many thanks to all those who made the game possible, including Twickenham RFC,  referee, Andrew Wadden, and Joe and Margi at the Sun Inn Richmond for providing post-match refreshments. Thanks also for the warm support of the spectators and the Moloney family, and to the players who willingly formed an opposition (particularly Sam Wilson for organising them).

Finally, a special thank you to our mascots, Mollie and Alyce, potential Harlequin Ladies of the future.
