The game against Lustianos XV was a try fest for one side, London Irish. Yes, we scored 13 tries and only conceded 1 kickable penalty but the real plaudits have to go to Lustianos; let’s look at it this way, for a side that has come together for the Amlin Challenge Cup they ONLY conceded 13 tries. We are a typical English side that have been comfy in the Premiership for a very long time while Lustianos XV have been formed in 2013 by the Portuguese Rugby Federation so our compelling win was nothing other then to be expected, was it?
Yes scoring 13 tries is terrific fun and setting a new record (biggest win) is great fun but credit must go to the Lustianos players, they could have thrown in the towel and given up but they fought and defended for the entire 80 minutes.
Now, this match report would be very long if I went into details about rucks and breaks through the line so I’ll just run through all 13 of our tries and the Lustianos penalty.
So on with the game:
1. 2 minutes in Shane Gerraghty throws the ball out wide to Bryn Evans, Bryn Evans passes to Guy Armitage who darts over to score. Shane Gerraghty misses.
2. Lustianos’ Pedro kicks penalty. London Irish 5-3 Lustianos XV
3. Lewington rips through the defence before offloading to Andrew Fenby who jumps over. Shane Gerraghty missed the conversion. London Irish 10-3 Lustianos XV
4. Penalty at scrum time for Irish; Shane Gerraghty converts penalty. London Irish 13-3 Lustianos XV
5. O’Leary switches play through the hands of the forwards and backs before Andrew Fenby crosses in the corner for his second of the game. Shane Gerraghty converts. London Irish 17-3 Lustianos XV
6. London Irish secure the bonus point before half time with Lewington making a great space with his skullduggery run before offloading to Andrew Fenby, who scored his third of the game. Shane Gerraghty converts. London Irish 24-3 Lustianos XV
7. From a London Irish scrum the pack kept pushing all the way from the 10 metre line until the try line; then the ref ran under the posts and signalled for a penalty try. Shane Gerraghty converts. London Irish 31-3 Lustianos XV
8. Shane Gerraghty used a cross field kick to the young Tom Fowlie who crashed down over the line. Shane missed. London Irish 36-3 Lustianos XV.
HALF TIME: London Irish 36-3 Lustianos XV
9. The London Irish pack drive over the line from a line out and Mr London Irish himself dotted down. Myles Dorrian missed the conversion. London Irish 60-3 Lustianos XV.
10. Tom Homer side steps through the Lustianos defence before diving over. Myles Dorrian converts. London Irish 67-3 Lustianos XV.
11. London Irish were camped out on the Lustianos line before Jebb Sinclair picks and goes over. Myles Dorrian converts. London Irish 43-3 Lustianos XV.
12. Andrew Fenby darts around the defence before giving Bryn Evans the ball and running under the posts. Myles Dorrian converts. London Irish 50-3 Lustianos XV.
13. The ball come across the filed through the hands of the backs before Kieran Low scored. Myles Dorrian misses. London Irish 55-3 Lustianos XV.
14. Dorrian clears from 22 metre but a mess up by the number 15 fails to gather under pressure by Tom Homer but Guy Armitage runs through and gets given the ball before sprinting in for the try. Myles Dorrian converts. London Irish 74-3 Lustianos XV.
15. And finally, Guy Armitage makes a great cutting run before offloading to Tom Fowlie who crossed. Myles Dorrian missed. London Irish 79-3 Lustianos XV.

And so it was a high scoring game for us but again it leaves me doubting whether it is fair that sides like Lustianos XV are allowed to compete, not that they don’t deserve to compete in a competition but if they really want to have an educating game they should play a Championship or League 1 side rather than get utterly destroyed by us. Should we really be that thrilled by this victory?
The simple answer is YES. We need to know that our ‘second’ side is capable of dismantling lower opposition and scoring tries. We also need to build momentum, sorry to sound like BS, but it’s true. We’ve been poor so far this season hopefully things will pick up (but they didn’t when we beat Lustianos and Prato last time around).
