First Salary Cap Report Published

PREMIERSHIP Rugby has today published its first Salary Cap Report, covering the season 2020-21.   The Report which presents a detailed analysis of the Salary Cap expenditure of our 13 clubs also looks at several key areas:

History of the Premiership Rugby Salary Cap

·        Salary Cap background

·        Operation and Management of the Salary Cap

·        Players used and squad sizes

·        Player salary insights

·        Excluded players

Established in 1999, the Salary Cap is under constant review but in 2020 it underwent some crucial changes inspired by a report written by former cabinet minister Lord Paul Myners and commissioned by Premiership Rugby.

Simon Massie-Taylor, Chief Executive at Premiership Rugby said: "The Salary Cap continues to be a crucial part of Premiership’s strategic framework and is supported unanimously by all 13 Premiership Rugby clubs.

“One of the main principles set out in the Myners Report emphasised the promotion of greater transparency to broaden and deepen visibility and scrutiny about how the Salary Cap operates in practice, so we are delighted to publish the first report today.

“This Report covers the season 2020-21 and it will become an annual publication.”

Only 1 club did not have a single player excluded from the salary cap figures. I’m assuming that was us?

Still astonished that the old rules essentially were: please don't go over the cap, but we probably won't check, unless you own up to it or lots of people make noise about it

Also seems that falcons don’t have much time to try and regain some lost ground as salary cap goes back up in the 24/25 season to 6.4 million

From what I have heard we may be banking on the income from the next TV deal kicking in by 24/25, and it is expected to rise considerably because worldwide viewing figures are much bigger than they were when the current deal was negotiated. We might not mind an increased cap by then.

All speculation from hearsay of course.

Seems hard to justify a bail out if it’s down to pisspoor management.

Terrible news for a great club and the people involved if the worst were allowed to happen, though.
