Deano helping out with Northumbria Police

Rugby legend Dean Richards spent time recently volunteering with our officers.
The Newcastle Falcons Director of Rugby, a former police officer himself, reached out to the Force to offer his time.
He provided a welcome extra set of hands to our officers from our resilience unit.
Dean helped put together hundreds of PPE kits that have now been handed out to our response teams and frontline officers, helping to keep them safe during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Superintendent Helena Barron, from the Force’s Operations Department, said: “I want to personally thank Dean for his kind offer to volunteer his time.
“Dean swapped his baton for a rugby ball years ago but will always be part of the wider police family and we thank him for his help in these unprecedented times.”
Dean added: “I know that at times like this people need to work together and help in any way they can. Thanks to Northumbria Police for letting me help in a small way, it was my privilege.”
The Force has gratefully received a number of offers of help, with names being collated should we need to call upon them.
Any former officers, volunteers and police staff who would like to express an interest in potentially returning to help former colleagues if needed can do so by visiting https://bit.ly/39RI1DR

A small gesture perhaps in the greater picture of things, but little efforts like this are so powerful in boosting morale at a time when it really needs boosting. Well done Deano, nice thought.
For those who don’t know Dean, he really does do a lot of good under the radar, for which he seeks no publicity. I often wish he’d let me publicise it, but I also admire him for not seeking the limelight. On this occasion it seems he’s agreed to do some PR for the force to help encourage further help, which is very welcome.
Probably a really good morale-booster for Northumbria Police, especially employees who are Falcons fans. Well done Deano!
I have been fortunate to get to know Dean over the last few years and it does not surprise me in the slightest what Smithy has posted above about him.

I know you can't say anything that could be even vaguely defined as your job while on furlough, so anything to do with announcements or the club's position is strictly out of bounds, but on a purely personal level, if you have any interesting anecdotes about players, staff anybody, I am sure people would appreciate reading them to help pass the time. After all, you do seem able to string a few words together when you put your mind to it.

Thanks Monkey. I’m at home with my seven-year-old 24/7 on furlough for the foreseeable, so not really in the loop as to who’s doing what. But thanks for thinking of me. I hope everyone is hanging in there and helping each other.
He used to take part in a charity cycle ride for a children's hospice, Leicester to Skegness about 90 miles - He was younger then of course but still on the large size!
He still gets out on his bike, to be fair. He did a charity ride for Doddie last year and is regularly out round Northumberland and Derwent Reservoir.
Did the Doddie ride last year and spoke with Dean at the finish. Absolutely horrendous torrential rain from start to finish but a great day for a great guy.
Was planning on doing it again this year but can’t see it happening unfortunately.
Anyone fancy doing it in the future u would highly recommend it.
