Just a few years ago Kevin Kyle was an unknown (outside the region anyway) football player working at the ferry terminal. Then a series of trials with with Chelsea, Blackpool and Oldham eventually landed him a contract with Sunderland Athletic. Despite loan spells with Huddersfield, Darlington and Rochdale he has not broken into the first team, but then again he would be taking over Niall Quinn's place!

This is all likely to change now that Kyle was handed his first cap as a substitute against South Korea on Tuesday night. More significantly, on Monday he will make history as one of the few Stranraer natives to represent Scotland as a full international when he is heavily tipped to started the match against South Africa in Hong Kong..

The Sunderland striker was handed his debut, coming on as a 65th minute substitute, but it was tough going for Bertie Vogts's young side as they lost 4-1 against the World Cup joint-hosts.

Scotland went 3-0 down in the first game of their three-match tour of the Far East before West Brom's Scott Dobie grabbed a consolation, but the home side grabbed a fourth late on.

Kyle - will win his first full Scotland cap on Monday, but he has yet to make a first team appearance for Sunderland!

Kevin admits that his call-up for the Far-east tour came as a complete shock.

"I couldn't believe it when I found out I was in the squad," he told his club's official website.

"It's still sinking in. I was told when I was at home in Scotland and the reaction from my friends and family was great.

"The manager said he would choose five or six of the young players he had a look at at the training camp last week and luckily I'm one of them.

"It's an amazing feeling, to think I'll be part of the full international squad. I have made a few under-21 appearances and that was an honour.

"To pull on a Scotland shirt at senior level would be fantastic."

The Scotland cap means that Kyle has played for his country before he has made a start for the Black Cats; not many players can make that claim!
