Like most modern Formula One drivers, Giancarlo started his career in    Karting. He won 12 races in the 1984 Minikart series, 8 in 85, 13 in 86 and 14 win's in 1988. He continued to run in Kart races until 1992 when he progressed from Karts and made his debut for Team Ravarotto in the Italian F3 championship.

In 1995 Giancarlo was given his first break in Formula One when he was offered a test role with Minardi. In 1996 he moved to Ferrari as a test driver and acted as Minardi's reserve driver when he made his Grand Prix debut running in 8 Championship races.

Jordan were quick to realise the potential for Giancarlo acknowledged as one of the sports quickest drivers. In his first season with the team in 1997 Giancarlo scored 20 points for the team and finished in 7th place in the Championship. For the next 4 years, Giancarlo drove for Benetton Playlife / Renault team finishing as high as 6th place in 2000.

For 2002 Giancarlo switched places with Jarno Trulli and came back to Jordan to partner the young Japanese rookie Takuma Sato. Giancarlo's 2002 wasn't the best season. During practice for the French Grand Prix, the EJ12's rear suspension failed and flung Giancarlo and the EJ12 into the tyre barrier. The FIA doctor Professor Sid Watkins told Giancarlo to rest and as such missed the race.

A number of collisions (not just caused by his team mate) put pay to the earlier season, however three fifth place finishes on the trot made Giancarlo the most consistent driver after the two Ferrari pilots.

So what does 2003 hold for Giancarlo?  At the time of writing (early February), Giancarlo has become a father for the second time.  He and his partner recently celebrated the birth of a son.  The start of the season must have been a worrying time for Fisi, however with the introduction of the EJ13, the first tests and finally having a race partner the future must be exceptionally bright for the Italian.
