Jim Magilton started his career at Liverpool but never made a first team appearance before in 1990 moving on to Oxford United where he spent just under four years, scoring 42 goals in 172 games which prompted Southampton to splash out £600,000 to bring him to the south coast, his time at Southampton was not nearly as productive as Jim scored 18 in 148 starts before his £1.6million transfer to Sheffield Wednesday but never held down a starting place at Hillsborough and was loaned out to Town in January 1999 before the move was made permanent in March 1999 when he moved from Hillsborough for £682,500.  

 

Jim will forever hold a place in Town fans hearts following his play-off second-leg hat-trick against Bolton Wanderers in 2000 which saw Town go on to the play-off final at Wembley and promotion to the premiership. Jim looked likely to leave Portman Road in 2002 after falling out of favour with then manager George Burley but Burley’s sacking in 2002 and Joe Royle appointments gave Jim another chance and he took it and in the summer of 2003 he was appointed as club captain after Matt Holland was sold to Charlton.

 

Jim has been capped 52 times by Northern Ireland and is ready to move into coaching after he finishes coaching now he has passed his UEFA badges.
