Town's play-off chances took yet another dent following a 2-0 defeat against Colchester United at Layer Road earlier today. Colchester were playing like a team fighting for their lives, which oddly enough they are. Kevin Lisbie, Scott Vernon and Karl Duguid both caused problems for the Town defence early on bank thankfully didn't find the back of the net.
Alan Lee headed into the arms of Col U ‘keeper Dean Gerken, Velice Sumulikoski was also denied by the ‘keeper before Col U went ahead.
Scott Vernon latched onto a pass from Kevin Lisbie and then flicked the ball past Stephen Bywater to make it 1-0.
Town responded with Lee who poked the ball wide, Danny Simpson was denied by Gerken and Danny Haynes was denied by the offside flag despite being level with the Col U defence as the first half ended.
The first 15 minutes of the second half lacked any real shots on goal but did have rather a number of throw ins, which Jim Magilton replied to by bringing on Gary Roberts in place of Alan Quinn just before the hour and just after the hour bringing on Jordan Rhodes on for Sumulikoski.
Haynes' crossed in for Lee but the went behind the Irishman and was cleared. Owen Garvan headed over for Town before Colchester made the points safe.
Scott Vernon again getting onto the end of a ball from Lisbie before firing past Bywater and into the net with just over 15 minutes to play.
Gary Roberts sent a free-kick over the bar, Jordan Rhodes crossed in but there wasn't a Town head anywhere near it, Lee couldn't quite find Danny Haynes before Haynes had a cross cleared by Colchester's defence before Rhodes nearly snatched one back for Town only to be denied by Gerken.
Lisbie could have scored twice in the final minutes, Alex Bruce denied him from the line, Stephen Bywater blocked another shot and the game ended with Lisbie firing off target.
