Town dropped out of the play-off places after losing 1-0 to table topping Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium earlier today.
Stoke started the brighter out of the two sides in front of more then 23,000 fans at the Britannia Stadium.
Liam Lawrence, who scored twice against Scunthorpe last week, looked like he wanted to continue in that vein against Town today and he nearly got a goal after just 6 minutes although his free kick eventually went over the bar.
Alan Lee fired wide after 22 minutes, the Irishman scuffing his shot from just 6 yards out, moments later Mamady Sidibe headed a Liam Lawrence corner wide.
Tommy Miller fired wide for Town from 20-yards before Lawrence fired the home side in front, Lawrence fired past Bywater from 25-yards after cutting in from the right wing.
Town responded in the second half as Richard Naylor headed Miller's free kick over, Velice Sumulikoski fired wide from 25-yards. Town manager Jim Magilton was sent to the stands by referee Michael Jones.
Stoke nearly doubled their advantage, first Ricardo Fuller's overhead kick went just wide before Ryan Shawcross tried his luck against Bywater from 20-yards.
Town could have grabbed an equaliser in the final 20 minutes with Sumulikoski and Bruce both going close.
Town have dropped to 7th in the Championship, one point behind Plymouth and Charlton.
BLUES boss Jim Magilton has complained about the multi-ball system after being sent to the stand during Ipswich's 1-0 loss at Stoke.
Magilton acted as an impromptu ball-boy to get the ball quickly to Alex Bruce and earned a stiff rebuke from referee Mick Jones.
Just as the referee was turning away Magilton said something else and Jones returned to send him to the stand.
As Magilton made his way down the touchline a can and bottle were thrown at him and he jogged away down the tunnel.
City could face further action for the missile throwing but Magilton dismissed it by saying: “It was nothing, it's not West Belfast.”
But he was left fuming after being sent off and questioned the use of the multi-ball system where ball boys use more than one ball to ensure the game moves along quickly.
He said: “Magilton said: “The referee tried to explain the multi-ball to me but I'm an educated boy.
“I asked the referee about the multi-ball not being fair. We were chasing the game and the ball has not come in quickly
“We do not deploy the multi-ball because I believe we do the right thing.”
He certainly thought his team had done the right thing for most of the game but were beaten by a wonder goal from Liam Lawrence.
He said: “We were competitive throughout. Our keeper has hardly had a save to make.
“Stoke are churning out results and it was a massive win for them.
“We passed the ball well and had our moments but we lacked quality in the final third and didn't go with enough belief but overall I was pleased.”
Magilton tweaked his starting side after two wins by bring back Alan Quinn, although Danny Haynes replaced the winger again at half time with the midfielder needing a scan on an ankle injury.
Stoke boss Tony Pulis said: “The goal would grace any game, it was a fantastic strike.
“Ipswich are a good side that pass the ballad n move your side and we stayed organised.”
Stoke stay top while Ipswich drop to seventh place but Pulis is not getting carried away.
He said: “I have been in this game too long to take anything for granted and if we keep doing then right things we will be fine.
“Unless we keep doing the right things we will get out pants pulled down and get our backsides slapped.”
“If we get 12 one-nils from now until end of season I will be doing somersaults.”
we aint out of it yet but we need to sort it out and win the next 2 if not we will not make them not to bad score as stoke are doing well but what I heard they did not play well so Ipswich should have maded the most of it I hope we make it and shut up the Norwich fans
The truth is Magiilton spat his dummy out. I sit directly behind te dug outs, and Magilton continualy abused his technical area, 10 sometimes 15 yards out. The ball had gone out for a throw and when the ball is in the crowd the temptation is to throw the ball onto the pitch, so the ballboys always wait to see what happens, dear old Jim didnt like this and ran twenty yards to get the ball that had just come down from the stands, by this time the Ipswich player already had a spare ball in his hand ready to throw, Jim sulked and kicked the ball at force toardsa ball boy. The ref had a word wit him and was obviously content on the exchange of words turning his back to continue with the game, when the refs back was turned sulky Jim said something lse at he ref like a spoilt schoolboy manager on a Sunday playing field. Maybe Jim should get his own house in order an tell his plyers not to dive, not the once on Saturday but twice.... Hooooooooofffff it and run tactics Jim.
I think you're slightly braindead, your players dived all the team, your fans influenced a 5hite referee, and your players just hoof the ball all the time, You do know Stoke were the team playing in red and white don't you or are you one of the part-time supporters who turned up yesterday for City's cup final.
