Former Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is now odds on favourite to succeed Paul Jewell into the Portman Road hotseat.

After 48 hours of speculation with a number of names being linked with the vacancy with little to choose between them in the betting markets, the Barnsley born former defender is now 4/7 favourite to take over at Town with Skybet with speculation mounting that he could well be Town's number one target.

Other leading candidates in the latest betting odds are Alan Curbishley who this morning said he would be interested in the role at 4/1 whilst Alan Shearer, who has the support of Town striker Michael Chopra and has already been interviewed according to reports, is currently at 7/1.

The only other candidates reckoned to be in with a decent chance of landing the role are former Town and England defender Terry Butcher who comes in at 10/1 with Former canary Gary Megson and former Bolton and Burnley boss Owen Coyle sitting on 16/1. All other candidates at this stage are regarded as outsiders, coming in at 25/1 or higher.
