Newcastle United defender Robbie Elliott is awaiting an apology from Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips for earning him an undeserved sending off on Wednesday night as the two sides met in the FA Cup.

32-year-old Elliot was handed a second yellow card near the end of Newcastle's 1-0 defeat to at Stamford Bridge in FA Cup quarter final as former Manchester City player SWP hit the deck way too easily.

Television replays showed the ex-Manchester City star tumbled to the turf despite there being no contact from Elliott.

Robbie Elliot (speaking to the Sun): "I'd hoped he might have been in touch to apologise, but I've not heard anything from Shaun Wright-Phillips yet.

"That red card could have ended my season.

"I had a lot of respect for the lad before but that's gone, it's very disappointing.

"I'm playing for a new contract, for my future, and what has happened could end all that.

"I'm now banned for the Charlton match and with Titus Bramble, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Craig Moore coming back, I might not get into the team again.

"I've been told the ref is willing to retract the card, but under the regulations, he can't."

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has hit back at allegations that SWP is a cheaet however, saying: "Shaun's not that type of player in my opinion, from what I know about him.

"He's certainly a fair player and he's not someone who goes to get other players sent off.

"I think it's an unfortunate comment and one that's unnecessary."
