Ok we have made 6 signings, and apparently there may be another one, hopefully a centre forward still to come.
Now don’t pick me up wrong I am happy at this turn of events, there have been periods during the previous 18 months where I had wondered whether we would ever actually see another signing at St James.
But there does seem to be a sudden ground swell of gratitude, almost as if the lord on high has cast his glance down and granted us a small measure of largess, now if only we could scrape and bow and behave like jolly grateful little peasants, then all will be good.
And on paper the signings do look like good ones, there is I feel little arguing that we are stronger than we were this time last season.
But Gratitude?
This is what we should have been doing every close season, from the season where we finished 5th and were given a wonderful chance to build on that platform, we have seen what in real terms is a systematic weakening of the team.
Until it reached the point where relegation next season was a real possibility, so quick get them in, must keep the sky TV money rolling in.
There is even talk of a change of direction for the club, whispers of ambition, well time I suppose will tell.
But these sort of signings, perhaps not in these numbers, should have been coming in every transfer window, the money was there, it was just not spent until it really had to be. This is not ambition, its desperation.
I pleased to a point to them for finally getting the players in now, but I would have even more grateful, had the club been run correctly all the time.
If we are having a bad season, I would expect to see more strengthening in January but this is not the way forward. The way forward is, if we have a good season, strengthen in January, again next summer, then perhaps my applause may begin.
