We used to have ambition

The southern based media, hates us, well either that or they believe we are part of Scotland. Now before anyone mentions that they are very favourable towards Manchester and Liverpool, I would like to bring a couple of things to your attention.

I am a Geordie, therefore as far as I am concerned Manchester and Liverpool is the south, in fact as far as I am concerned, everything South of Jarrow, is technically London.

Don’t believe me?

Well say Scotland gets independence, have a look at a map, you will find the two cities mentioned are in fact in the midlands.

Even moving away from Football for a second and into the murky world of politics, we keep hearing London provides the most money for the country, what we fail to hear, is it receives more money than it actually provides, so when Thatcher was busy laying devastation on the North, we were still funding the south, think Olympics, national stadiums, transport network ect.

But to be honest let them get on with it, my concern for the purposes of this piece is Football.

Look at the commentary on Debuchy during the world cup, and how they failed to get their little minds around how he was selected before Sagna, I guarantee that won’t happen now he has moved off to southernland.

The day we signed Shearer, I happened to buy a copy of the daily mirror, that morning, it had a picture of a smiling Shearer, and some placating headline, which I no longer remember, I happened to be travelling to London myself that day, and I discovered my car had a leaking radiator, which involved stopping at each and every service station to top it up, there stood the mirror proclaiming one of these (picture of Shearer) or 15000 of these (picture of nurse).

Now does that happen when any other side spends big money? Of course Ashley neatly side steps this by spending nothing, but that is a rant for another day.

If an alien arrived on this planet and was introduced to football via match of the day, he could be excused for thinking our full name is actually ‘and finally’. Unless of course we get beat, then they will hoy us on first.

Actually on the BBC can anyone explain to me, why a public broadcaster, funded out of my pocket whether I like it or not (and I don’t) can send it’s presenters off to Brazil, no doubt in 5 star hotels and expenses, to sit in a studio there? Wouldn’t it of saved quite a bit, to keep them in a studio here, and simply send the commentators?

Now by this I don’t wish to suggest that the local press is perfect, I have probably ranted at the Chronicle more than any other paper, mind having said that I buy it more often than any other paper.

But for whatever it and its sister papers faults, I never believe they want anything but the best for my side, that they understand the area, and have at least visited, whether I always agree with them or not is beside the point.

I am from a generation, where the fathers seldom classed themselves as English, they were Geordies first, last and only. What happened in London was about as important as what was happening in Macau.

That does seem to have changed somewhat (although not for me), but what happens in Newcastle, unless it’s something bad, matters to the south about as much as Mars.

The continuing Southern bias.

I've visited a number of grounds in the last few years and have had the opportunity to see a few commentary boxes, the funny thing about them is they are all very similar 2 chairs 2 microphones and 2 monitors and the strangest thjng I've noticed is they have all had very poor views of the pitch, this takes me back to the 2 monitors, at most football matches the commentators watch ghe match on tv so they get the same view we do so why do they need to be there. I totally agree about the pundits, there's no reason why they need to go on a month long jolly at our expense when they could do the job from the UK

I really doubt if I get started on what I think about the licence fee and how it is used, that I would ever stop.
