He won just 5 games out of 26 whilst manager at the club but Newcastle United have gone and re-hired Joe Kinnear, this time as Director of Football with the final say on all transfers to the club. Pardew and Chief Scout Graham Carr are both a year into 8 year contracts and there is no way Pardew would have expected to have a man previously left the club to be coming in and calling the shots.

Kinnear, 66, has insisted that he is the ideal man to make the best of Newcastle’s summer transfer window, claiming he is a good judge of players and a good tactician. However, he failed to show those skills in his previous stint on Tyneside and has shown little evidence of it since leaving in 2009 having been out of the game.

He said of the situation;

"It's been an ongoing situation with Mike Ashley for three weeks and once we clarified what my role would be - in charge of transfers and to help out Alan Pardew - I thought it's a very interesting role.

I don't believe I could be at a better role at a better club. I believe I'm a very good judge of players, a good tactician, I've worked with the best - I intend to make Newcastle far better than they are now.

It's absolutely done. I signed it with Mike today and that's taken care of. I intend to meet Alan [Pardew] either tomorrow or within the coming week to discuss the future and go through the team itself. We will discuss where it's glaringly clear we need to improve and that will be my job, to go and find those players.

I'm as fit as a fiddle now. I'm absolutely delighted with the situation. I've been working out in the gym, I go for long walks, I've lost lot of weight - I'm in the best physical shape I've ever been.

I've been waiting for the opportunity to come back. I have turned down managerial jobs in the lower leagues, because I felt I'd gone past that and I wanted to get my teeth into something in the Premier League. I've been very fortunate in my life as a manager, I've been manager of the year three times and I've had a great football career so I think I'm ideal for this situation."

During Kinnear’s time at Newcastle he brought in Kevin Nolan from Bolton Wanderers and Ryan Taylor from Wigan, who he part exchanged for Charles N’Zogbia after he spectacularly fell out with the midfielder who then refused to play for him. At the time N’Zogbia said;

"First of all I wish to apologise to the fans for wanting to leave the club. However, having been insulted by Joe Kinnear, I will never play for him again while he remains Newcastle manager.”

Back in 2012 Joe Kinnear spoke about Pardew’s need for four or five summer signings, which wasn’t exactly rocket science, he also indicated that he had kept tabs on the club since being sacked. He said;

“This year we’ll probably find out more about Alan Pardew – and his squad – than in the season we’ve just had. Obviously, it’ll be an exciting league as far as Newcastle fans are concerned.

But it’s added stress to the team and players that he’s got. My advice would be to add at least four or five new good players to strengthen the squad and take a step forward.

That was always my idea with Mike. I said to Mike ‘give me two years to start with, and then we’ll build on it. I said it would take me two years to find out what was needed. This is a fantastic club – it’s a one-club city. It’s got phenomenal fans.

Since I’ve left, I’ve been in touch with Chris Hughton two or three times a week. We’ve always been good friends. I always said to Chris ‘have a go yourself, son – break away from being No 2. You’ve got enough about you to make it’. I encouraged him as much as I could.”

Pardew is unlikely to be impressed with Mike Ashley’s first summer signing and after just one year into his new contract he would not have envisaged a former manager telling the press that they will be out ranking him when it comes to new players.

When asked who would have the final say he added;

“It will be me.

If between the three of us (Kinnear, Pardew and head scout Graham Carr) we sit down and iron it out and them two decide that he's not that good, then my ears will be wide open. It's not a case of lump it or like it. But if there is a close decision to be made and we are running out of time and it's something we have to do and I see a specific job...

Footballers come in all shapes and sizes and if there is a specific job that we need to add some meat or beef to the team, we'll do it. I believe that's what we have to do.

If there is somewhere that we're lacking pace in wide areas, then we'll add that to the team. If there is somewhere where we are short of people scoring goals, and we see people who will guarantee us 20 goals a season, then we will take that chance and I will buy those players.

First and foremost, once I have clarified that with Alan - this is for the good of Newcastle, this is quite clear what needs to happen here - that will be the area I will work in, it's as simple as that.

I'm going to do the best I possibly can to make Newcastle a far better team than they are now." 

This could now be a very interesting summer for the club with Kinnear already proving to be a bit of a joke signing among the fans....... but will Pardew stick it out? Or will he reject the idea of the manager being managed in this way and cut his losses?

Hope you had a nice time Carys I'd still like to know what's going on in Newcastle. I really can't believe they brought Kinnear back in. Surely there must be another 6 billion people out there who would do a better job.
